vuluo of diversified industry iu creating
wealth and progress, aud giving perma
nence and value to property. Examples
of the truth of our a sumption dot hillsides
and spread over tho valleys of New Eng
land aud other soctious of tho country,
and have, as by magic, rendered rich aud
coutouted a people whoso sterilo soil and
bleak cliumle, but for this mighty lever,
would have boon poor indeed. Wo need
not look to Massachusetts or Rhode Islnud,
however, for examples. Wo have a neigh
boring city near by, with whoso history
aud progross wo aro familiar.
How often do wo hear tho remark
made, “Columbus would bo deserted but
for her factories.” With her former trad
ing territory curtailod by rival cities such
as this, and a dozen others of more or
less importance, sho still sits a queen on
her chosen throne ; nor fears failure of
future growth and prosperity so long as
tho hum of her thousand spindles and
manufacturing establishments are hoard
abovo tho roar of Chattahoochee's rush
ing tide.
It is questionable which of tho two hor
eitizous would prefer to surrender to
day—her railways or her factories. That
prosperity which in former days was en
dangered by rival cities lias no power
longer to disquiet hor proporty-holdeis ;
for its value now and henceforth receives
additional strong'h as shuttle after shut
tle leaps through hor looms, doubling pud
quadrupling the value of raw material,
and giving omploymont to tho thousands
in her suburbs who else might bo a
charge to tin* public. Wo too, need
something more limn our railroad crossings
to fix permanent value to brick and mortar

—to bring population to build up a city,

lings shall bo the homos of assured compe
tency. Wo do not know the future, nor
can wo say whore or whou a rival city in
the woods may spring to tho front, mini <1
with our boasted connections, and make
tho sumo demand upon the farmers and
consumers of Tallapoosa, Clov and Ran
dolph, that wo have, uml with like
success. Wo need something to fall back
upon; some protection other than the
fancies of our consumers, «r tho interest
of our railroads. Lot us, then, encourage
the most incipient industry, w hether it bo
a wheelbarrow factory or smith's shop,'
nor soek to drive from us men whose oc
cupation may entail smoko and smut, noise
or confusion on our vacant sqtiaros, for
of such come prosperity, power and wealth.
