Interesting Analysis •/ Church Mem
bership.
Jtev. Dr. J. S. Key, tho eloquent pastor
of St. Luke's M. E. Church in this city,
delivered on Sunday morning a most in
teresting sermon on “Womans Duty to
the Church." To illustrate, be showed
the immonso influence of woman and the
power she exerted in his own congrega
tion. For this purpose he gave an anal
ysis of the church membership.
Tho total consisted of >/o2 members :
890 females and 130 males—showing 200
more females than males.
Of these 390 female members, 156 are
married, 142 unmarried, and 98 widows.
Of the 130 males, 14 are non-residents,
13 minors, and 109 city adults.
Of tho 150 married females, 89 have
husbands who are non-members of the
church, and 07 are members.
Does not this prove how potent an in
fluence woman may possess ?
Tho Sundny School numbers some 300
members, showing nearly two children to
every married woman and widow.
A query suggested is, Ought thero not
to bo as many Sunday School children as
there nro members ? Might not many be
induced to attend Suuday School—the
basis of all elementary training and all
religious instruction—who now wander
about our streets and acquire nothing save
wickedness ? Would not personal iuflu-
onco induce quite a number to come
within the influence of good? We regard
Sunday Schools as tho grandest oduoators
of the land.

Cotton Shipments of Troy, Ala.
Dr. A. Uavenscroft, tho gontlemanly
railroad agent at Troy, Ala., has very
kindly furnished us tho following figures
in regard to tho shipment of cotton from
Union Springs, Ala. It will bo noted tho
shipments this season to date exceed those
of tho ontiro cotton yoar tho past season
by 18 bales. Troy expects to receive 1,500
or 2,000 more halos this year. On yostor-
day morning 21 bales were shipped to
New York, 2 to Montgomery, 8 to Mobile,
24 to Selma and 137 to Columbus. So it
will bo noted thoro are Selma buyers in
Troy.
Tho following is tho tabular statomont
of shipments:
LOCAL BRIERS.
—More valentioes wore received Sun
day than Saturday—nearly all comic. One
hundred and twenty thousand valentines
passed through tho New York Post-office.
—A teacher in a private school located
in an adjoining county, while recently
hearing a spelling lesson, asked a little
girl if she could spell a certain word that
had been missed, and so stand on the head
of the class. The child very modestly
answered that she could not stand on her
head.
—Mr. Ruby married Miss Jet. “Look
out for tho trinkets," neatly remarked a
newspaper.
—Future candidates are now being sug
gested for tho fall election. W. A. Little,
Esq., Solicitor of tho Superior Court, is
frequently mentioned for Congress.
—Among other current rumors is one
that Judgo Johnson will resign in tho
spring ou account of illness, and Hon. M.
J. Crawford, who hold tho position years
ago, will be appointed in his stead.
—Columbus will receive a largo stock
of spring goods by some merchants.
Others will buy sparingly, believing in a
small season.
—Tho Lenten season begius Wednes
day.
—Weather still warm] and threatening
rain.
—A man has appeared with an organ
and a performing dog and monkey.
—Columbus has the ablest clergymen
in the South. The pooplo should sustain
them.

A Rather Amusing Ceremony.
On Sunday ovouiug, a number of color
ed people appeared in front of tho resi
dence of llov. Dr. J. S. Key, of St. Luke’s
M. E. Church. At ton o’clock tho family
had retired, and tho Doctor undressed and
about to retire, whon a knock was heard
at the door. To the minister’s demand
as to what was wanted, tho crowd roplied
they wanted to lie married and would wait
until the preacher was dressed. Ho yield
ed to their request,‘dressed, invited them
to the parlor and performed tho ceremo
ny. More were in frout of the houso than
could possibly bo contained inside.
Aftor the ceremony, Dr. Key was in
formed that tho marriage was to be cele

By ltov. Mr. Hampton. When they ar
