.(■rafting.
This is a vorj simple process, ouo that
jiuy tuuu or womau with coumioa sense
etui : y perforin. When the bud bo-
gius to swell and the sap begins to flow,
thou h the time to graft. If you would
introduce choice varietiei ou common
stock-*, select the smallest limbs, and
gaW them off about throe inches from
the trunk. With a sharp knife pure tim
bark smooth around tho edges, and with
mallet and chisol split I ho stump in tho
centro; have ready a scion you wish to
insert. It should be out from last year's
growth, with not more than three or four
buds. Cut the baso from the lower bud,
ja a wedgo shape, uud iusert iu tho split
of tho stump, taking cure tho bark of the
scion and stump fit close togothOr. A
good grafting wax is mude by mixing and
moiling together four purls of rosin, two
parts of tallow undone part of bees wax ;
work it well by hand until it becomes of
the consistency of shoemaker’s wax;
form a littlo ball of this around the
wound. It keeps out tho sun, air and
water. Tho wound will soon houl, tho
nscouding sap will expand tho top bud,
fl ud a frtiit-boiriag limb will bo produced
in two or three seasons. A very good
grafting oement may ho made by mixing
equal pjrtious of clay and fresh cow
dung. When applied to tho limb, bind
around it u strip of cotton cloth, to koep
it in place until it hardens.
(■artlen Implement*.
Nest to good seed, good implements
oro essential to tho making a good gar-
don. Mora vegetables are ruined by
injudicious culture, than tho gardener is
aware of Growing cabbages, beets,
peas, «to., require deep culture. But
how Ai ri wo givo it, without breaking
the v - .< : win? Use tho Ilex liner prong
hoe. Tn;.- is ono of tho finest imple
ments for l:.) garden ever invented. It AJt
is made of the very best stool, with seven
prongs ; tho prongs or tints about twelve p,
inohas long. Tho soil between tho rows "**■"
of vegetables may bo kept open, and
porous with this tool, without cutting tho
roots. And if a piece of ground has been Cntt
inetiino before planting, and
has become baked, g > over it with tho _
prong lion, and it will bo in lino order to 1
roceivo tho reed. Next in iiuportauco to ,
tho good working of the soil, around and ^
dor the plants, is the Warren hoe. | a.
This is u throe prong, cost stc-el blade, ns
elastic as a trowel. It is, in fact, threo ;
hoes in oue, will work the surface bo- | ,
tho rows. Tho small prongs may
be turned right and loft between tho
plants, cutting up and picking out tho
cedi and grass as no other can do. It
is tho best cotton choping hoo I have ovor
tried, and should be iu tlio hands of every
raior and girdeuor. Those implements
ay bo found at most of tho hardware
stores, and with all dealers iu gardening
tools. Try them.

Compromise.
Whilst we admire pluck and persever
ance, and admit that as a rule, it will win
in ordinary affairs of life, yet thero are
times when it is sheer folly,if not criminal,
to indulge our game propensities; es
pecially is this true when persistence
may place at hazard other interests than
otir own, tho public weal should bo para
mount with every good citizon, and how
ever much wo may dosire to carry out
private ends, if in the effort to do so wo
jepoardizo tho general interest, the pub
lic judgment will not hold us innocent of
a wrong iu magnitude proportionate to
tho injury inflicted.
We suppose the opposing Democratic
candidates for the Mayoralty of this city
will readily admit tho truth of our re
marks above, and wo urge them as they
value tho suocess of Opelika to come
together on some common sense ground,
and let us cease to divido our strength
and present an unbroken front to an
adroit euemy, who seek by placing in
their load a quasi-Democrat personally
unobjectionable to many of our oitizens
in tho hope to givo a color of respecta
bility to a party who huve controlled tho
county and State elections of Alabama
long enough to bring about loads of debt,
which nothing but wholesale repudiation
will roliove us of—at tho saiuo tirno foist
ing upon the people a legion of incom
petent ofiloe-holders from a Governor to
a bailiff.
If Alabama is to be redoomed and once
inoro placed upon the proud pedestal from
which she has been so rudely dragged, the
white men of tho cities and counties must
take tho load and again lift her* up to
greatness. No municipal election is of
little importance. Radical success to-day
in Opelika may be the euteriug wedge for
a triumph for that party in tho fall. Wo
repeat it. No small matter should bo al
lowed to disintegrate a parly whose suc
cess last spring showed their power when
united.
Mut>*rribcr*
At th»H place, as well elsewhere, would
do well to rood the proprietor’s ultimatum
in yesterday's paper, aud coiuo forward
and settle. Tho Enquirer has been fur
nished cheerfully under tho promise of
payment, and if you desire to read a pa
per you should not withhold tho small
sums individually which you owe. From
Monday wo shall commence and present
the accounts of parties who may be duo
tho office at this place, and hope to bo
met promptly with tho money. To Ope
lika this department has met a necessity
which no other paper has filled, and we
beliovo her citizens uud property holders
are under some obligations to aid iu sus
taining an enterprise which has redound
ed to tho publio good. Not only should
those iu arrears pay up, but others
have not heretofore taken tho paper
should do so ond urge their friends* to do
likewise.
Rmllcnl Pow wow.
A friend who loves a good thiug visited
. old out-bouso last night, and has been
mining tho street to-day with tho sayings
aud doings of “Pomp. Guffey,” and the
brudders of divors colors. Tho object
wo learn, to establish washer-wo
mens rights, and introduce somo new fnu-
glod drug to the sisters who wallow in
iap and suds.
.Hr. Hurrl*' Card.
Wo call attention to the card below
from Mr. J. II. Harris, doclining tho can-

iful act Mr. Harris deserves the
