That Shoot iny Affair in Macon—Cards
and Whiskey.
The report wo gava yesterday of the
shooting difficulty at Macon was very
nearly correct. Between 11 a. m and 12
m. of Tuesday, George F. Abell and John
13. Cherry, each aged about twenty-two
years and well known hero, were playing
cards in Vauncki’a saloon, on Cotton ave
nue. A dispute uroso botween them.
Abell knocked Cherry down twice. Dr.
Crowell Johnson coruiug up and attempt
ing to interfere, Abell drew u pistol and .1 the tax off pinners, that
tired, tbo ball passing through the tappel
of the doctor h cout, and glancing from a
button into Cherry’s body, injured his left
lung. The doctor made tracks from
thoro* Abell then fired at himself, the
ball entering his left broast. lie then
tired a third shot, aiming this time nt
Cherry, but missing. Jiolh men, at lust
uccounts, wero supposed to bo mortally
wounded. They were carried to tbo homes
d their parents. Too much whiskey and
carrying ooncoalci weapons was tbo cause.
Cherry’s brother-in-law (Sam ltainey.) was
killed neur the same spot two mouths ago.

an overcoat.
One of the Efforts.
Whiskey soemed to have tangled up
badly Homo young boys in Columbus. We
* hope none landed in tbo guard house.
One Closed Oat•
Mr. G. W. Brown, in accordance with
a provious determination, closed out yes
terday the retail liquor establishment ho
lias heretofore had in the roar of his largo
grocery sloro, and will retail no more of
the “spirituous."
Hote They Looked Then.
Wo learn from an old paper that I he
roofs of cars wore shingled. A specimen
is still shown on a North Carolina road.
The ears cf thoso times must have been
a very fair ropresoututiou on wheels of
the onbhousos of the present day.
Hoard oj Trade.
Wo hear some talk of reviving this al
most played out institution. Active and
energetic young men, who are also among
the leading merchants, are spoken of for
officers. Such a union of merchants,
properly and wisely conducted, would
wield immense weight and inilueuco. Or
ganization and union constitute great
strength, and promote the general good
of trade to a marked degree.
.-it* Astonishiny Crop.
That of the babies in Columbus is one.
Wo saw twenty of the in-fant-ry in arms
pass by a window in about uh many min
utes, and yet it was not a good time for
observing either. Tbo wind was too cool
for the cheeks of the little dears. There’s
a crowd of them in tbo city—that cannot
bo doubted—nud they are si ill coming.
A baby show can bo gotteu up on short
notion.
The llaek Hair is tho Thiny.
A gent (email who accompanied a lady

and bo didn't. Halloas be entered tho
carriage, secured a companion, and
chapeau-less he rode to tho ball. Tho
back hair was saved, uud tho curls rippled
as uicolv us when they wore manufactured
by the adept hutul and grouse of the
barber.

Next Monday evening, at tho meoting
of Council, tho question of a Fair tlais fall
will bo settled. Wo firmly beliovo tbroo-
fourtbs of tho city are in flfvor of tbo ap
propriation. If councilman consult tbo
wishes of their constituents they will cer
tainly give $.Vi0tr, tbe amount asked, for
the purpose of putting tho buildings in
lor, and do it without doubt or hesita
tion. Those expositions have largely
paid Columbus as u business place. Every
who comes hero spend Homo money,

amounts into circulation. Ilvcry city in
Georgia has helped their Fair Associations

Colutnbus is only asked for $11,000.
Council ought to givo it. If tho mombors
are disinclined to vole the appropriation
without tho endorsement of tbo people,
let tbo body give tbe people an opportu
nity to vote. They will then see by what
an overwhelming majority tho measure
would be adopted. Tho annual Fuirs huvo
resulted iu nothing but profit to Colum
bus, but bus occasioned some loss to the
stockholders. Tbo corporation has never
given a cent to tbo Association.
A (lay and l<’estieo old Gray.
A gray horse attached to an empty wa
gon was standing very quietly in front of
Crichton’s bakery. The barking of play
ful dogs filled him with such joy that Le
concluded to kick up. Ho did it with so
much satisfaction to himself that ho re
peated the operation. Having succeeded
so well ho concluded to run, and dartod.
Ho made first for lloymeu A Co.’s to get
a drink, changed purpose, wheeled und
started for tho bank to got a check, or a
ohttvo. The check was refused, but ho
narrowly missed tho shave. Having
strewn the wagon all along tho street ho
very sensibly concluded to gallop to
Monday's Rvory stable. Perhaps his
original intention was to got rid of that
wagon. It was tho ntroet sensation of
the sunset hour. All tbo boys set up u
yell. Tbe owner could see no fun in the
operation.

lolored men toll us on Wednesday
uight a large pnrty of negroes assembled
at oue of tho churches to witness tlio
marriage of a pair of (heir race. The bride
went to tho building with friends. They
waited long and anxiously for the groom,
whose name is given nH llenry Williams.
Minutes wore lengthened to hours, but
still lie oamo not. Everybody got mad.
Tho fury of the disappointed woman was
terrible. She expressed very derogatory
opinions of her love. A search was com
menced. Tho expected groom was found
asleep on a good’s box on tbo pavement
The “intended" commenced giving him
thunder. Ho said ho couldu t help it, he
couldn’t marry, he had oulv fifteen conts
in bis pocket, und that wouldn’t buy a
license, and ho couldn't got trusted for
one. llo couldn’t got tnariied, and then
buy tho license. He was inexorable,
resisted prayers and tears, und finally be
came enraged himself, and lot out a piece
of his mind as related to his forlorn con
dition, and that of other people. No
marriage took place und that fifteen cents

Oats Sold in Columbus.
Since October 1st, Columbus merchants
have sold some 75,000 bushels of oats.
In addition to this amount, plautors who
previously raised them, have disposed of
some 25,000 bushels more- making the
total for tho season 100,000 bushels.
Tins estimate, taken rather roughly, by
basing the whole upon tho sales of two
large dealers, is regarded in pretty cor
rect. One house has disposed of 7,’Jill
bushels. There are somo twenty -five or
don’t use, and
kept it on whiskey that we do."
—We notice on our streets parties who
had gono to Texas to win fortunes, and
havo raturued, sick and disgusted with
the country.
—An enthusiastic Granger has entered
the declaration that ho “would rather be
^doorkeeper in the hulls of tho Grangers
then to shovel sugar iu tho stores of tho
rnidd *i men.”
—Tho clouds utterly failed yesterday
iu sending down rain, as they tried to do
about noon. The afternoon was bright
and clear. Rather cooler towards night.
—“Wor-uk," exclaimed a country fel
low when offered a job, “doyon spose I'd
wor-uk, mister, when coon tracks arc as
thick as grass blades ?"
—Tho guano sales are being slowly
increased. People aro not so fond ns
they were of tho rank perfume.
—Tho latest thing in envelopes is a
small black devil on tho fold, with tho
words “who the” above his lordship and
tho words “in this from” undernoatb.
Thus it roads (inclusive of tbe picture of
Sutan), “Who tho devil is this from?"
—A boat is duo to-day, and oxpectod to
leave to-morrow.
—Tho amount of fertilizers estimated to
be sold iu Columbus this season is 50 to
75 per cont. less than the past ouo. This
will make some 1,000 to 2,000 tons to ho
taken. Yesterday tho paper hud it 60 to
75 “tons."
—Shade trees aro boing planted
rious quarters of the city.
Tho Columbus minstrel troupo will
not start ou its travels until the first of
next month.
The 1‘antomino Troupe.
Tho advertisement appears this morn
g. Tho company is highly praised by
the journals of New Orleans, Mobile
Montgomery. Tho clown is said to be
fully tho equal of tho celebrated G. L
Fox of tho well known Ilumpty Dumpty
troupo. They have many specialties,
which are applauded most generously
among them tho boy cornet play or, tho
boy and girl dancers, and tho spudo and
ludder dancer. They ploy lioro next

Must Uo a favorite.
Katie Putnam, tho actross, is very pop

of theatre goors in that place gave her a
beautiful gold watch. Glad to hoar she
