Mr. Brown stated that to any company or person leasing he would deliver four to five thousand pounds of ice per day at three quarters of a cent per pound, and relieve the lessee of all tronble save that selling. It soemed to be very generally understood that the works But. Rain is looked for. —The last resort—a shoemaker. This is patented. —A man named Vowell was lately mur dered. Glad it was neither U nor I. —The favorite drink now in town is the “Crusader." They are unwilling to un dertake it again, for the simple reason that they do uot wish to engage in peddling. Tho difficulty tho com pany has labored under is owing to the fact that subscribers have not paid their stock. Those subscriptions are to bo oufuroed by suit. The company also has to expend a considerable sum in dig ging tho large well. Notwithstanding everything, there is a fine prospect tho works will bo run this summer, and cheap ico be tho oouifort and luxury of the city. As long as this ice machino is here, there is no chnuce for a monopoly of trade in what in a Southern olimato is absolutely indispensable. Our Fair, Council has refused to grant any aid to give a Fair this Fall, and even to atTord tax-payers tbo opportunity to vote on tho question. If tho latter privilege bad been allowed, tho appropriation would huvo boon carriod by a bea.y majority of tax-payers. There is hardly a probability that money can bo ruisod by private sub scriptions, aud tho lending stockholders say their only recourse is to sell tho build ings; and that Columbns will be deprived of her greatest pleasure aud one of the principal instruments which tended to givo her a deserved aud brilliant reputa tion. If Council opposes a moasuro, why is it thoy refuse to let the people voto on it, uud thus lot the community have an opiuion ? The judgmout of a majority of Counoilmen does not always convoy tbo wishes of Columbus; nor is it infalli ble, though tho members may so think. Hunting, Those who have tried it, pronounce that tho present time affords abundance of amusomout and exoitiug sport. Tbo streams and pouds have un abundance of snipe and ducks, and tho old fields are running over with rather wild partridges. Doves are also represented to be plentiful in some sections.
