flH h j can<», and the preservation of the buds in
* j planting. To the inexperienced it might
seem that the roots would have exhausted
all the food in the cotton seed the first
legal notices.
COLUMBUS x
iKDAY march 21. 1R74.
SB DEPARTMENT.
v PEABODY,
WnitiinK Uni tin.
10 recent heavy rains have done in-
ilablo damage to farm land. The
ther had been propitious for plowing,
farmers wore hurrying in their corn.
have been foolish enough to open
furrow, plant, aud throw one or two
on the seed, trusting to luck, to
,k out the middles. Most of the lands
planted is now a network
canals, and the lands that have
broken shallow, have al-
been denuded of their soil. The
,ulage, “It is useless to cry over spilt
Ik," will apply with force here. The
estiou is, how shall we remedy, aud
mil tho torn, washed and jagged land ?
turning that it is too wot to plow,
ro-open the ditohes, then, if tho
id is worth saving, fill up the gullies
lh pine straw; this effectually stops fu-
e washes, and inproves the land. A
Hied field may bo saved in this man-
and lie made more productive than
re. It will be time well spent to
nil tho farm before attempting, to
lD t or plow it. But all may not live
iero “liletld knots are mazin handy,"
j may not bo able to get pine straw.
i fill in with old timber, leaves from
woods and swamps, anything that
1 decomposed will make a soil.
To those who have planted corn aud
their fields badly washed, I would
, don't trust to replautiDg, but mend
ait until tho land is dry enough to
w to advantage, aud then plow up and
iut aguin. Who has takeu precautions
net the bud worm ? Who knows
here tho bud worm conies from ? I he
rn* tho germ is in the kernel when it *s
[anted, and it only takes favorable local-
I seasons to developo it. Corn
ifjvil 1 j u solution of saltpetre will not
ivo tin- 1 u.l worm. Dissolve one pound
salt pul it- in ns much warm water as
cover odo bushel of corn, and let it
nd twenty-four hours before planting,
will give the seed a vigorous start, aud
bud worm will trouble it.
There is much scientific research thrown
the farmer by those who know
othing of tho practical details of animal
vegetable physiology. The farmer can
etter study tho science of animal and
[otable life in his daily and hourly pruc-
i and observation, than the scholur can
his cloister, surrounded with books. I
not object to books ; wo cannot do
itbout them. But I would have the
ctical farmer know of what his farm
Is are composed, what are the enemies
their vitality aud progress, and to have
enough to find a remedy.
Brother farmers, mend up your lands.
>u’t bo discouraged. Give the bud
orrn a dose of saltpetre, aud wo will
a good crop of com yet.
Wlint Crops to “Pitch.”
Don’t be alarmed, brother farmers. I
not about to advise you what to plant,
or you have already had advioe enough.
u often amused myself at the advice
get, and often from sources so compo-
;ent to advise. The fact is, advice un-
isked is breath and ink wastod. Now,
ivemising that you will plant just what
on please, let us talk together about how
plunt. I am not talking now* to nute-
lolliun planters, if they plant aud culti-
■ate us in ante-bellum times, bnt to plan-
ho live by their own sinews as well
w brains. It is now time to put in corn,
ait do not put it in unless tho land ie well
prepared. There is no crop that suffers
more from drought than oorn, and conse
quently there is no crop that noods such
ep ploughing beforo planting. Run a
subsoil plow nftor the Excelsior or Watt.
The stiff subsoil will bo broken without
being turned up, and the land will pre-
fieui an oven surface—ready to lay oft' in
rows or checks to receive the seed.
Now about fertilizers. Tho greatest
yield of corn I ever had (ono hundred
bushols to tho acre) I used Peruvian and
Pacific guano ; but that was when my
land was fresh, and tho guano was pure.
Tho farmer that does uol get ten bush
els of corn to tho acre, looses his time
and money, lie cannot live at it. Thero
many things supposed to go to waste
about tho farm and house lot, that if util
ized would bo iqusl to guano, as food for
(•ropa. Read the communicition on
“Sucofissful Fanning,’ und profit l»y it.
F the land is anyways level, I would re
command planting in cheeks. Corn
planted iu cheeks will never noud the hoe
after thinning to a stand. Tho horse
boo, cultivator or sweep will do all the
work. I do not recommend you to let
guano alone; but unless you can ptty for
it when you purohuso it, you had better.
Thera is nothing that gives the young
corn such a vigorous start as the pure
guauos.
It is now time to plant the sugar cane,
unless you have udopted my plau. Mine
was planted last full, when I cut the cano
to make the syrup. When ready to cut the
catte, I stripped the loaves, leaving them
on tho ground, thou cut the cane close to
the ground. The leaves were then all
picked up and laid along the ridge over
tbe stumps ; then with a two-horse Avery
plow 1 throw two heavy furrows over the
"bole. This protects the stumps from
frost during the wiuter, and they make as
fine stalks for two. successive years us
those planted from the cut cane. I o ,n
now going through with the prong hoc,
and uncovering tho stumps to the genial
spring. I rIho plant my cauo iu the fall,
"ben 1 cut it, so that I have
bauking it. I open deep furrows, aud j
fill in with cotton seed, at tho rate of j
seventy-five bushels to the acre. In this ^
I place tho cano as I cut it to make my | ^
sjrup. On this I throw four furrows with i
R double-horse plow. About the middle |
°f March I scrape off tho surface to j
"ithiu two or three inches of tho cane. .
year; hut the phosphates in the hulls
have just become soluble the second year,
and I find the yield from the roots tho
second year every way equal to the first
planted from the cane. And what a
saving in expense and labor!
To those who are about to plant cane
I would recommend cotton seed as tho
very best fertilizer for it, for if applied
in sufficient quantity, it lasts two years,
and it gives a most beautiful transparency
to the syrup. Thero are many opinions
about tho distance the rows should be
apart. I have tried three, four, five nud
feet, and I have come to the conclu
sion that for up country culture five feet is
the best distance.
