Tue Public Schools in Columbus arc to
have a grand demonstration one evening
early in May. in the Opera House, for the
purpose of securing a philosophical ap
paratus for the institution. The pro
gramme is to consist of song*, recitations,
charades, aud caliathouic exercises. The
finest entertainmont ever given in Co
lumbus—certainly the most beautiful—
whs by tho pupils of these schools. The
ball was filled to an extent we have never
■den before ot since, and encomiums
were upon every tongue. Enough mouey
was secured to purchaso two excellent
pianos. The oooaug eutertainmout
promises to be as interesting aud attract
ive in evety particular, and will be os
largely remunerative
Hoy and Cow Thieves Arrested. .
On Monday night, Marshal Murphy
with other policeman, arrested Charles
Jouett, Jeff Stevens and anothor colored
man, with whoso namo we are not fur
nished. Thoy are charged with being a I j”"|uired
portion of a gsug who have of late boon '
stealing hogs, cows aud other nuiruals,
killing them and appropriating tho flesh
to their owu sustenance, aud selling tho
hides to tho support of their families.
The two were carried before Justice
Chappell. Charles Jones waived an ex
amination, and was required to give ono
huudrod dollar bond or go to jail. Jeff
Stevens stood a trial. C. II. Williams
and A. Dollar, Esq*., appearing for the
prosoentiou, and T. W. Grimes, Esq. lie
also was required to give a bond of ono
hundred dollnrs. Neither of tho negroes
could Rivo bond, and hence were sent to
jail.

Situation on the Loiter River.
Tho officers of tho New Jackson, which
arrived yesterday, reports the river has
Hooded all tho low lauds, but the stream
has rapidly subsided. At Chattahoochee,
the lauding aud buildings of tho Jackson
ville, Penaacols and Mobile railroad were
under water. These structures were
erected on pilings, aud cannot well be in
jured. During tho freshet the bout could
uot pass under the bridge at Fort Gaines.
This is ns high as tho railroad bridge at
Eufaula. The wagon bridge at the latter
place is five feet lower. None of tho
bridges were injured materially. The one
nt Fort Gaines had a wooden pier washed
