J _ County, March 21, 1874. } Tick tirst balloting in the MassachuHettH Legislature for a United States Senator, when the two Houses voted separately, is reported by a dispatch of Tuesday night. Dawes lodjin the Senate, and lloar in the House, but neither of them had auything near a majority. After the first day the two Houses vote in joint convention Tho contest ox cites much interest, and it increases now that a protracted strugglo is indicated. JutmE Cox, who was ossafisinuted in Ar kansas tho othor day, is tho second Ci cuit Judge who has been ki'lod in that Htato within tbo last six mo ths. Aldridge, who killed him w’os a member of tho last Legislature of Arkansas. He is a lawyer, and was lately imprisoned by order of Judge Cox for contempt of court, and this constituted tho motive of the murder, is stated that his conduct in court, for which he was imprlsonod, was outrageous ly improper and disorderly. The Eufnula Nnn, explains a “very im portant issue” involved in a case before the Chancery Court for Harbour county Ala. Briefly atntod it is this : The Htato Aid not provided for an endorsement by the State of the bonds of tho Vicksburg and ilrunswick Kuilaond, to the nuiount of $10,000 per milo, when tho company had built and equipped twenty miles with its own roi Lost night there waH a succession of terrific shocks on the sides of Laid Moun tain, accompanied by a sharp thunder storm. Simultaneously with the thunder, ? uick and loud reports could bo heard rom the mountain sides. 1 stopped at the house of an old farmer, who welcomed rne and said that he would like to have a hundred in tbo house, as the mountain had scured him nearly out of his life. They are urged to this, not by a resolu tion to save money and live within their means, so much us by tho hard neccseity of povorty which precludes credit from merchant or factor. It is astonishing how little a man wants when he knows he can't got it; it is surprising how much wants for his happiness when his credit in unlimited and Ida proapoeta ! th ° ni « ht - » heB ‘ ho ™“> blin « , * . at its height, he got up, and assembling K .md. there are a few men HO fortunately Lili aroUDdt bl ‘ mi beW „ constituted that they nover want, because prayer meeting. Hucli men, however, are definite accouut of tho source of tho con- the leochos who do no good by precept or ■ vulsion. example. Wo have boon atruck in ob-1 .1 started up the mountain this morning serving the economical tendency now forced on the people, to see tho direction their saving takes. We can imngino ono of those men sitting down with his index finger over his right brow, and his chin on his left hand, whilo ho montally con siders whore ho can curtail his expenses to advantage. Coinmuuing with himself, he says: “Well, I pay tho preacbor ten dollars a year and feed him about as much more; I’ll cut «JT tho ten dollars as my part, and ns tho old woman likos to moo him round, reckon wo'U let him go on feeding. Thorn's ton dollars. Then I give two dollars a year for a paper ; true, I nint paid for it for tho last two yours, but us only the young unn rood it, I’ll cut it oir. That's twolvo dollars. Tho old woman wanted a now dross, and has boon spoakin' 'bout fixiu’ up the young ’u,.n for Hunday independent of Ktulo I School. Hbo’ll linvo to worry tbrouRh aid. The rrostdont of tho company ro fused to cortify that Mr. Papot, the con tractor, had built uud equipped tho first Hootnm with the resources of tho compa ny, because he had given mortgages for tho iron, rolling stock, Ac., and the ques tion now to bo tried is whether tho rond is untitled to tho State aid under those circumstances. J timiR Woods' decision of tho caso in tho United SlateH Circuit Court for L< isiana, iu which certuiu foreign holders of the houdH of that Htato asked for an in junction against tho execution of the Funding act, 1h an important ono. sustained by the Supreme Coutt of tho United Stutos, it cuts otl‘ any legal rc ody which bondholders may claim against a repudiating or “compromising” State Tho Funding net sealed tho bonds at tho rate of sixty cents on tho dollar, virtually repudiating forty pur cunt, of the indebt edness. The meagre report of Judge Woods' decision, now before us, stat that ho refused tho injunction in consid eration of the rights of tho State, from which we infer that lie hold thut tho United States Courts had no jurisdiction to compel a Htnto to pay its debts. Till: CAPITOL RI'ENTION. Wo suo now that tho question of the seat of government is being connected with tho select ion of tho next Oovornor. Tim Millodgovillo Union declares that the pooplo arc for Gen. Colquitt for Govornor, provided he will favor tho removal of the capital to Millodgovillo, and one or two other expressions by the press of a simi lar character have mot our eye. Such declarations confirm us in our opiuion that tho pormanent location of the sent of govorumeut is a question that ought to bo dotorminod separately and promptly. It ought not to bo oouuoctod with tho question of oulling a Convention, with the ratification of n now constitution, with the elections of mombors to a State Con vention, or with any othor elections. If so mix >d up, it will prevent the decision of questions of great and gnnoral impor tance upon their merits, because it will iulluouco tho votes of a groat many poo plo, though it may bo only a subordinate issue and ono ill which the groat mass of tho people are very littlo concerned. It will bo a disturbing element in our poli tics until settled, and should therefore bo put out of the way as hood as practicable. If the Legislature at ita last sossiou had pna.sod a constitutional aiueudiuout em bracing this question ulono, it might have been settled within about ono your from this date. Tho next Legislature could also have passed it at its mootiug in Jan uury next, nud lmvo at once submitted it to the popular vote for ratification or re jection. There in no good reason w hy the friends of ovory looality aspiring for the capitol should not huvo agreed to this mode ot nettling tho question. If they want a full and fair expression of tho pop ular will upon the matter, that is the way on the clothiu' she has ; and I never did hot hoavy on Sunday schools, no how. I can’t buy much sugar nor cofi'oo ; I never liked sugar in cofi'oo, uud only got it to please tho ole woman—bo wo'U Htriko out sugar. 1 must lot up on boots and pants i for tho boys ; and wo enu’t run oil' for a doctor whenever any ono fools had— though 1 haven’t puid Dootor Smith's bills for sumo tirno. If tho worrutns destroy cotton, doctors should bo mado to fool it as much us planlcrs. I can't buy gunnor, nor hay. I got no fodder, and tho mules must work on short rations of corn—of I can got any nt all. Well, on this nil 1 reckon I ought to bo ablo to cut down all of five hundred dollars.” Tho economist rises, lights his pipe, refreshes himself with a glass of “old corn,” for which ho paid cash, and then walked out with the air of a man who has resolved on a great piooo o! solf-donial for the sake of his fumily uud the rest of mnnkiud. Of oourso, this man onunot ho taken ah a typo, but wo think ho represents a largo class. Yosterdny such u man oallod on us. Ho was accompanied by a friend, and judging by their intoxication and ca pacity, they must have spent hotweon them four dollara for whiskey. Yot they wished for time on tho fow dollurs they owed iih, vowing they did not have any money. When they left wo watched them, and thoy walked as straight ns their staggering logs would lot them to a sa loon, whore, wo preaumo, thoy proceeded to drown their sorrows in another bumper. The economy that bogius with ceasing to aid (he church, or pay for a paper, or rong a doctor--wo wore going to add, “or cheat a lawyer,” hut that's impossi- lo— docs not stand on a good basis ; par ticularly if tho man deprives his wife and littlo ones of absolute comforts without a thought of curtailing his owu whiskey and tobacco. A l>kSI UYI.I> TKIHUTE. Tho Christ inn Register, a Unitarian paper of Bouton, in reviewing some ser mons of Kev. Win. J. Ellis, of Nashville, uses tho language wo copy below. Mr. Ellis is well-known to many of our poo plo, having often preached iu this city, aud once having charge of a church in LIuhroU county, Ala. Ho is n brother of Messrs. D. 1\ and UorwoU Ellis, of this fity, and was always noted for his sturdy independence of character and unilinohiug adhercuco to what he boliuved to be right. Wo copy from tho Christian Reg- inter : Wo have never before hoard of Mr. Ellis, but wo hope to hour miieh of him hereafter. If those interesting uud able sorinous arc a typo of tho character of tho man, ho is a man worth kuowing. They are genuine ltroud Church sermons, quite worthy to bo classed with tho best sormoUH of Stanley, Brooke and ltobort- sou. Mr. Ellis has been for a quarter of a century a uiisister of tho Episcopal Church. He is now an indopeudont min ister m Nashvillo, having been driven out from the church of his love boenuso lie would not equivocate; would not conceal his opinions; would not pr<tj&d to behove what his reason bad rejected. After sixteen days of prayer meeting, during which time tho people left their oattlo and crops to take caro of thorn- boIvoh, thoy seem now awaiting Homo tor- rible calamity, and in many instants their anxiety is really distressing. Nearly 200 converts to religion ore reported. UKANT PA KIN H PRISON EKM. Bnil Refused. Tho motion to hail tho Grant parish prisoners was arguod before Judge Woods. Mr. Whitaker, for defence, arguod that tho judge had the discretion to grant bail in a capital caso whore tho ovidonco against the prisoners was not great. Aud it was to be presumod that tho evidence was not great or conclusive in this case, as a majority of the jury had declared tho prisoners “not guilty,’ and tho caso had rosultcd in a mistrial. District Attornoy Bockv/ith arose to ar gue the case for tho prosecution, but Judgo Woods declined to hoar him. The matter, tho Judgo thought, wus one en tirely in the discretion of tho court; it was a case of great magnitudo. As for Alfred G. Lewis, who was ac quitted by tho jury nud ro-iudictod on a now indictment charging a similar oft’enso against him, with the more substitution of tho name of William Williams for that of Tillman, hail is granted. Mr. Beckwith announced that but for tbo sickness of some of his witnesses, aud the absence of the wituoBsos for tho defense, he would be ready to go to trial now. Under any circumstances ho would ho ready for trial at tho next torru of court, and tho caso would bo called up early in May.—N. 0.
