WHOLESALE LIQUOR DEALERS.
the following particulars :
“Iu March, 1872, Dr. Livingstone reach*
ed Uuyouyembe, and, attor receiving sup-
piie-i from Zanzibar, set out with ninety
uieu on his laat journey iu the followiug
August. He proceeded iu a southwesterly
direction to tbo sjutheru extremity of
Like Lietnbi, the prolongation of Tang*
nuyiki towards the south. Thence he
made his way to the northern shore of
Lake Bangweolo. near the poiut where he
was in July* 13G8. Hut, being unable to
cross, ho passed round the eastern end of
tbe lake, fording the (Jhambeza aud three
smaller tributaries ; and, marching along
the southern shore, he appears to have
reached the poiut where he expeeted to
find the four fountains, two of which
were, he conjectured, the sources of the
Kile, mentioned by Iierodoua. It is then
probable that he marched iu a northerly
direction and explored the region of the
Katanga copper mines; for Lieutenant
Catueron, who has been iudefatigable in
oollooting information, was told by an
Arab merchant that he had seen Dr. Liv •
ingstone and his party, all well, some
mouths previous at Katanga. In return
ing they had to cross the Luapula and
work their way eastward through an iu-
uudated country, in which, sometimes for
three hours at a time, the water stood
above the waists of the travelers. Dar
ing this trying journey two of the men
died aud several deserted. When tuaroh-
iug across the swampy tract near Moira
Aohinto Dr. Livingstone was attacked by
dysentery, brought on by exposure aud
over fatigne. • According to one account
ho got as far us tbe district of Lobisa on
his way back, to the east of Bangweolo,
where ho died after ten or fifteen daya'
illness, probably in May or April, 1878, if
Sir Samuel Baker’s theory proves oorreot,at
the very souroo of the Nile, at the foun
tains of streams flowing into the south
end of Lake Tanganyika, tho most dis
tant reservoir of the great river. When
Livingstone died bis party numbered
sevent v-‘*Jne men, among whom were a
few Kan k boys and other faithful aer-
vants. t.ii nf among them was Chumau,
who had h ou rescued from slavery ou
tho Zambesi, and who went on ahead to
beg succor from Unyanyembe. He seems
to havo arrived on the lfith of October.
He stated that the party, with Dr. Liv-
iugstone’s body, was from Ion to twenty
days’ march from Unyanyembe, and wi»h
nearly starving; that tbe> had also two
boxes of books with them ; and that the
Doctor, before bis death, had told them
to fetch another box of papers which he
had left at Ujiji and to take it down to
the coast. Chumau found the Kant Coast
Livingstone Hearuh Expedition ut Unyan-
yoiube; and a telegram dated at Aden on
February 23, informs ns that while Lieut.
Murphy is bringing the body of the illus
trious traveler down to Zanzibar, Lieuten
ant Cameron has goue onwards to Ujiji
to recover Dr. Liviustone s papers.”
An Editoh Who is Deaf.—We thought
everybody in the State knew that we
were deaf, but once in a while we find
one who is not aware of the fact. A fe
male book-peddler came to tho office the
other day. She wished to dispose of a
book. She was alono in this world, and
had no ono to whom she could turn for
sympathy or assistance; hence we should
buy her book. She was unmarried, and
had no manly heart into which she could
pour her sufferings, therefore we ought
to invest in hor book. She had received
a liberal education, and could talk
French like a native; wo oould not, in
consequence, pay her less than $2 for a
book. We had listened attentively, and
here broke in with, “What did you say?
We’re doaf." She started in a loud voice
and went through her rigmarole. When
she had fiuishod, we went and got a roll
of paper and made it into a speaking
trumpet, placed one end to our ear and
told her to proceed. She commenced:
“I am alone in the world”—
“It doesn't make the slightest differ
ence to us. We are a husband and father.
Bigamy is not allowed in this State. We
are not eligible to proposals.”
“Ob, what a fool tho man is,” she said
iu a low tone; then at the top of her
voice, “I don’t want to marry yon. I
want to sell-a-b-o-o-k." This last aentenoe
was howled.
“We don’t want a cook," we remarked
blandly ; “our wife does the cooking, and
she wouldn't allow as good-looking a wo
man as you to stay in the house five min
utes. She is very jealous." She looked
at us in despair. Gathering her robes
about her. giving ua a glance of con
tempt, she exclaimed : “I do believe that
if a 300 pounder were let off alongside
that doaf fool's head, he’d think some
body was knocking at the door." You
should have heard her slam tbe door
when she went out. We hoard it.—San
