C. A. PEA1 JODY, - - - Editor.
Walks mid Talks in tin* Unrdcu.
“Well, Mr. Poaboily, tho full moon in
April in near at bund, nud I tremble for
iuy fino gnrdeu, tbo recent change in the
weathor foreshadowing what may come.”
“1'es, tnudam, but the chaugo coming
now, mukes it tuoro favorable for the
weather on tho full of the moon.”
“Should wo have n frost to bito the
Irish potato vines, is there no way to save
them't'
“Yes, madam. Cut tho vinos below the
frost bito before the sun shines on them,
ami they will not be injured, only retar
ded a little.”
“You say I must not have any trees in
my garden. Would you advise mo to
have any flowers iu it ?”
“I would uot advise you to have the
lloweriug shrubs there ; they drain toq
much from the soil that the vegetables
need ; but you may plant tho annuals,
ami some of tho pereuuiuls, on tho bor
ders of your garden walks, without injury
to the vegetables. There has been great
improvement in the last few years iu an
nual flowers ; many of thorn surpass tho
moat beautiful of groen-houso plants.
Among them I would recommend
tho Doublo Ziuia ; they are grown
as large and doublo as the
dahlia, and of every shade, from puie
white to crimson, doublo balsams, all
shades, as beautiful aud double as the ca-
melia japouica, double und single petu
nias, all shades, phlox druimnondii, ver
benas, Gorman ton week utocks, doublo
dwarf larkspur, everlasting flouas, pinks,
iu varieties, priueos feather, sweet pens,
pansies, marigold, mignonette, candytuft,
sweet alyseum, clarkia elegaus, dwarf cox
comb, and u great many othors which
would add beauty to tho garden without
i jury to the vegetables. Most of those
pUnis may be cultivated ou tho borders,
where they will take up little or no room
and give an air of cheerfulness aud beau
ty to tbo otherwise sombre garden. You
may ordor theso seeds by mail from any
of the promiuont seedsmen in New York
or Philadelphia; they will come as
promptly as a letter. This is ono good
thing that has cowo out of lladical rulo—
the dissemination of eoeds and plants by
mail."
“Yos, sir; it is a great thing for tho
farmers and gardeners of tho country, and
we must givo tho old cloccn footed gentle-
jinin his due.”
“Have you boen in Mrs. Cunningham’s
garden yet V”
“Vos, madam; I will tell what I saw
to-morrow.” _
For tho Enquirer-Sun.]
Shall Slock be l-'caiccd out or in ?
Our people are annually expending
lunch more to feuco stock out than tho
stock is worth. Tho groat cost of sus
taining fencos, thoir inconvenience iu the
way of culture, tho sholter Ihoy alVord to
briers aud weeds, and their unsightly
appearance all couspiro to rondel' their
disuse desirable. Many portions of the
country are so boro of timber that fences
will have to bo abandoned from necessity
if not from policy.
Tho fencos of the United Htatos have
cost tuoro than any class of property savo
real ostato. Figures could bo adduced
to prove tho truth of the above, but it is
unnecessary, as the public mind has so
often boen dirocted to it. A foe simple
in luud should bo free from molestation,
not only from men, but from stock,
king may not pluco his foot upon tho soil
of a peasant without permission is tho
doctrine of tho common law, and yet nni
main are allowed privileges that are do-
nied to individuals. Is this right ? What
right has any man to graze his stock
upon tho land of unothor ? Every far
mer in tho lund knows that tho cost of
feuciug stock out is much greater thau
that of fencing them in.
Fun at Home.—Don’t be afraid of u
little fun at home, good people. Don't
shut up your houses lest the sun should
fade your carpets ; nor your hearts, lest a
happy laugh should shake down some of
the musty cob-webs there. If you want
to ruin your sons, lot them think that all
mirth and social enjoyment must be loft
ou tho threshold when theyoome homo at
night. When onco a home is regarded as
only a place to oat, drink and sleop iu,
the work is begun that ends in gambling-
houses and degradation. Young people
must have fun and relaxation somewhere.
If they do nut Pud it at their own hearth-
sloiies, ii will t»e sought in other and loss
profitable places. Therefore, lot tho lire
burn brightly at uigLt, and make tho
h iino ever delightful with all those little
arts that, patents so perfectly understand.
Don’t repress the buoyant spirits of your
children; half an hour of merriment
round the lamp and firelight of homo
blots out the remembrance of many a euro
»ud annoyance during tho day, and the
bust safeguard they can take with them
into tho world is the uusccu influence of
a bright little domestic sanctum.—Ameri
can Farmer.
Home-Made Fisiitilizerh.—A North
Carolina correspondent who was furnish
ed through our Agency with chemicals
lor a fertilizer, writes us as follows:
1 intended to givo you a correct ac
count of tho result of uiy experiment
"itli those iugredieuts you suit to me
last spring nud made into a formula that
"as taken from tho American Farmer.
It was 10 IDs. nitrate of soda, 00 lbs.
sulphate ammonia, 1 bbl. hone dust, 1
bbl. plaster, 1 bbl. onk asles, k bushel
Halt, mixed with 1,1*00 IDs. of tine stable
manure ; the salts mixed in 1 l»bl. water,
and sprinkle over the manure.
I used it side by side two rows each,
with two manufactur'd fertilizers, L>0
lbs. oach to tho aero, aud (500 lbs. of my
mixture, or WiUon'ti formula, us I call it.
Tho result of each was about the same.
J'ho formula cost me an Actual outlay of
Sit* per ton—tho purchased fertilizers
cost $r,o per ton oach. Yours, <fce.
