Hirer Improvement.
This matter Logins to excite strongly
tho thoughtful attontion of onr mer
chants. Tho valno of tho trade is appa
rent. Businoss mon aro beginning to soo
that if Columbus will improve certain
points below,so as to malm tho stream nav
igable, sho con control tbo ontiro river
from this point to the Gulf. r lhis traffic
is commenced, and can bo incroasod bo-
yond a million dollars ovory soason. Tho
boats, since Soptombor 1st, have brought
7,727 bales of cotton to Columbus—1,585
moro than tho post yonr during tho soiuo
poriod. llad tbo river boon very full
* oarlior months, tho receipts
from this sourco would liavo already
counted over 10,000 buloH. With them
cumo largo orders for good®, aud largo
consignments of syrup, oranges and other
products of the lower river. Columbus
sooins to bo preferred as a market by the
lower country, for many reasons, 'lhoy
got as good a price os at any seaport.
We have no ten day rnlo horo for rejec
tions. A farmer who Honda his cotton
horo, can have it sold, and all his orders
iillod and purchases, and money brought
bock to him by tho boat of tho next day.
Such a businoss is worth having, aud onr
City Council should not only work to
soouro what wo already havo, but
to enlarge the Hold of oporotiou. 'lho
Bonding of a delegation to Washington to
induce that body to have our river clean-
