There io no dty In tbd Htats that hag

•very day they are being dap oiled. By
a grant from the Legislators, the tills to
the commons is rested in the city, and a
Board of Commissioners appointed to
sell or dispose of them. We desire to
call ’the attention of the Commission ass
to the fast that soma of the most beauti
ful portions of the oo masons asa being
disfigured and rendered inralnabla by ax-
oarationa made by the corporation oasts
and others wanting dirt. If tbd dty
nesds dirt, they should be required to got
it from pleoea that are not eligible for
bnildiog purposes.
Wbila on this subject, wo ask the ques
tion, for pobllo information, what right
bag the Southwestern Bailroad to feaoo
In and appropriate as muoh of the com
mons as they bars enelosed ? If our re
collection seme ns right, the dty grant
ed theme certain amount for railroad pur
poses, and to bo used only for railroad
purposes, provided they would hoop open
the avenues loading from the eity. Many
ottinens from Linwood and Wynntoo ooas-
plain that the crossings arc insufficient.
If the railroad hat made snob an agree
ment, they should bo forced to open a
crossing to every street loading east fi
this city that is crossed by their road.
Counoil should, in giving railroads ear.
tain privileges, always protest the rights
of Individuals, and foroe tha railroads to
respect them. Wbila we have said this
much, wa do not propose to redact on tha
road, bnt simply to oall tha attention of
the pobllo, and of the Commissioners and
Council to tha grievances of those living
outside of tha eity limits.
On Wednesday the pionio of the City

A team belonging to Colonel J. M.
Starke, of Wynuton, while on the way to
this oity, at an early hour yesterday morn
ing, while attempting to cross the crook
at tha foot of Wynn's Hill, narrowly
saeaped drowning—toi sudden rains hav
ing swollen the stream to suoh a height as
to reader crossing a very difficult and
dangerous undertaking.
Continued fislsi.
Everybody esnt he united, but it does
seam that we have hied a little moredsmp-
neas than la needed just at this time. The
continued rains iu (his section have done
immense injury to the growing drops, bo-
aides retarding ootion planting to an
alarming extent. The farmers had scarcely
recovered from the late freshets before
the past few days' rain set iu and undone
all of their work, These ehowora would
ha mpra highly appreciated in' July and
Auguat than now. Let us have dry
weather for a oouple of weeks, end all
will be well.
Clip LipM Uuardt’ Picnic To-Morrow,
Those who would spend a day in reore-

Prohibition Me Order o/fAe Oar.
From the Atlanta Confutation comes the
tad Intelligence thkt Palmetto, a little
up eonntry town, has dooided to prohibit
the sale of liquor in its sacred precincts
by a handsome majority. This is sod
news to tha barkeepers and liquor houses,
for it prevents tha sale of mixed drinks,
bnt gives tha drag stores a fair showing
to sail by the bottle for medieinal (?) pur
poses. Palmetto, from the vote, n^ust
have more reformed' drunkards than any
plaoe in the State. Wa are against iu-
temperauoo and squally against prohibi
tion. We ase responsible beings, and
should be allowed to take a morning draui
without the oonaeSt of our neighbors.
The question may be agitated here,
but whether or not it will snsoeed is an
other question.

Sunday morning was sad in witnaaring
the fnneral of Mias Bassay, whose unfor
tunate death wa have made mention of.
The funeral took plaoe from tha First
Baptist Church. The sermon was preached
by the Rev. Mr. Kendriok. It was ana of
tbo most impressive scenes we have ever
witnessed. When the procession reached
the chnrah door it was preceded by the
pastor, followed by eight young ladies—
friends and olaas-matea of the deceased;
then came the remains, carried by Messrs.
0. M. Whittle, J. W. Tinsley, A. L.
Green, J. L. Pollard, Wo. Bruce, and
Aleck Yonng. After the touching sermon
of Mr. Kendrick, the prooeseion was
formed and moved to tba cemetery, where
the remains of all that is earthly of Mim
Bussey were consigned to the silent tomb.
Thus has passed away a lovely young
lady, the pride of her parents and the
light of her friends.

Adjournment cm/ Vourtc,
Last week Judge Johnson adjourned
the Harris Superior Court, owing to the
freshets and oonBeqnent impassable eon-
dition of the roads. The same good and
sufficient reasons prompted Judge John
son to adjourn the Marion County Court,
whioh should have met yesterday, and tha
Stewart County Court, which meets next
Monday.
The Judge gave aa an additional reason
for the adjournments, that tba farmers
hod better attend to the repairing of tboir
farms, then litigating. Judge Johnson
lB vory popular with the bar, and the peo
ple, end is looked upon as the bast Judge
of law in the State.
