when the bill came to that body. If the
Senate passed it, they would give it strong
support; if th* Hone* defeated it, a com
mittee of coofereno* would be asked and
strong friends put on it. Prominent
members in the House Ud Senate from
the Eastern, Middle ud Western States
promised besrty support, and ao did those
from Alabama, Florida and our own State.
General Gordon ia on the committee that
will report on it in the Senate. He felt
great confidence in getting something
from #5,000 to #80,000. The Commis
sion applied for the latter. If we get
anything the work will be begun. Thia
will be a great advantage, for the Secre
tary will to the next Congress make esti
mates for the completion of the work,
and Congreee incorporate U in the general
appropriation bill. If the appropriation
be not gained this session, yon must press
it on the next Congress. All the mem
bers with whom he had served in Con-
S ress were anxious to do something for
reorgia. They seemed pleaxed to know
that delegations of the Southern people
were sent on to back the efforts of their
Congressmen to do something for the
South. Every member for tb* North and
West had some sobemt on foot to benefit
bisdistriot. This is why the House Com
mittee declined to report appropriations
to new works.
Your money baa bean wisely spent. In
the next two years he confidently expect
ed that the natioual government would
expend ou our river #75,000 to #100,000,
ud have it navigable all seasona of the
year. Wa hope to get something from
this Congress, and have cause to expeot it.
He spoke in the highest terms of the
effort* of bi* oollesKnea, Col. Mott, ex-
Mayor Mollheuny and Major Calhoun. He.
also named Senators from Massachusetts,
New York, Vermont and Penusylvauis,
who promised to advance our cause, m
well m leading members of the House.
A better feeling prevails now between
the North and South thu at uy period
siuoe the war. The commission bad been
treated most courteously. The North
appears willing to help us. The endeavor
should be to prevent irritation between
tbe sections. Congressmen appeared
glad to find the South alive to internal
xxroBTs or oiyicbm.
