Hr. Baz ter wes illegally oouuted in. Bazter re fused to be a tool of the Badloala. This present movement is a oonspiraoy of th* Hadieals, who are now using as a tool Brooks, the man they defeated. The Badicals are lad by Clayton, who is now United States Senator, and whose term soon ezpires. This is a bold plot of Clayton's to seise the State. Clayton’s brother, John Clayton, is President of the Senate. Th* Ueutan- ant Governor is V. V. Smith, against whom there is a charge of forgery, and who ean be easily removed if Bazter is ousted by Brooks. Then if Brooks gets contumacious, he ean be removed, and Powell’s brother, as President of the Senate, becomes Governor and master of tb* situation. TH* CONTZNDIND rosozs. Brooks bss an army of about 609 ne groes and 100 whites, of whom fifty are prospsotive office-holders. Bazter has a larger army, but no leaders of ability Bazter can oommand any force. Brool is immensely popular with the negroes. He was Chaplain of a negro regiment daring the war. Grant wants to sustain Brooks, and any violence on Barter's part will affords pretest for upholding Brooke. Bazter has no personal courage. Brooks is very brave man.- Bazter dug up a sizty- four pound cannon near the river, wbioh is his sole artillery. Brooks has several cannon. Trade is very much affected.
