There innst bo at least fifteen hundred

find business ? There is plenty of room,
however, in the upper stories.
Thermometer and Bain Gauge.
For the week ending at noon yesterday
the thermometer, observed three times a
day, averaged 81 degrees; and for the
same tiiuo the gnugo showed that 2 89-100
inches of rain had fallen. This makes
4 77-100 inches of rain which have fallen
in the last two weeks.
Existence.
We have to adopt the maxim of the old
negro, if tho worst comes to the worst.
He said: “If 1 can make de trip till
blackberries come in, I’m all right; for
dey will Inst to ’sinmion an’ roasteu ears,
an’ whon talers come I’m safe for do win
ter.”
Dog Berk.
We are told this by a reliable gentleman
from the country : A neighbor bad u sow
that hud six pigs, and a slut with nino
pups. Tho sow eat the paps and died.
Tho slut took her pigs aud is raising
them. They are doing well at tho proseut
time. Our informant swears to the truth
ot this report.
Heavy Jiain.
The heaviest shower we have bad yet
fell last afternoon about dusk. Vivid
lightuiug aud heavy thunderiug aocom-
pauied. Tho cloud couiiug up from the
northwest was a grand but rather terrify
ing aspect. Tho suu had tinged the
whole surface with a brilliant fiery glow.
l'reeeman Injured.
Over a week ago, while Mr. E4 Porter,
the accomplished pressman of the Gilbert
bindery und job office, was working with
his foot a small press, accidentally his
right foot got beneath the weight aud all
bis toes were brokeu. lie still suffers
great pain, bnt the indications aro that ho
will speedily recover from hut injuries*
He has the warmest sympathies of the
craft and hosts of friends, who hope to
toon ace him on our streets all right.
Drs. Grimes Jr Grimes are his physicians.
An Interesting Belie.
Oar readers well remember the ingen
ious mechanic and iuventor, A. Dwight
Browu, who so long lived in Columbus
and died in this city last yoar. It seems
he was in the Florida and Indian wars of
1856. During bin loiauro hours, while a vol.
unteer,he formed a cup of an Iudian pow
der heru, its bottom of tin picked up on the
battle ground of Gen. Dade. What ren
dered it so attractive and curious was an
accurate journal whioh Mr. Brown kept
with bis knife on the outside. Every
thing of note was set down, and so at-
ranged that, by turning the goblet round
in a person s hand, the whole could be
read. At lost accounts this goblet was at
Macon. Mr. E. E. Brown, of Macon, was
a brother of the deceased.
Narrow Escape—Horse Drowned.
Mr. Ben Hirscli, of the firm of Hirach
Bro’s, of Seale, Ala., accompanied by a
freedman, .in a buggy, on Thursday morn
ing last, on tbeir way to the plantation of
Mr. Hirach, four miles southwest from
8eale, attempted to cross Weolustee creek
by fording it. The stream is a small one
at the ordinary stage of water, but when
they reached it, was very full from the
heavy rain of the evening before. They
vontured in, and finding the water would
be swimming attempted to turn round
and go back, in doing which, the horse,
Buggy and*Mr. H. Were carried rapidly
some distance down the stream. Tho
horse drowned, and Mr. H. escaped, after
near losing his life. The freedman leaped
from the baggy when it started down the
.dream and reaohed the shore safely.
A Hitting Climax to a Noble though!.
To Columbus and her noble women in
justly duo the honor of inaugurating that
molt beautiful custom of Memorial Day.
Civilization is ever marked by the honor
a nation does its dead.
As a fitting olirnax to this holy custom
of decorations is the last projeet of oor
ever-thoughtful ladies. Columbus will
now soon have a beautiful and lasting
monument, which shall tell the story of
many a glorious deed. This is no day
dream nor Utopian thought; for our real,
live ladies have this in charge, and intend
to do what they attempt.
In furtherance of this noble objeot, the
“Olde Folses’ Concert”—decidedly the
best amiBngnd and beat conducted ama-
tedr entertainment ever given in this
city—will be repeated on Tuesday night
next.
On that oecasion there will be a change
of programme, introducing new songs and
acts.
Those who saw this conoert before need
no argument to carry them again. The
object is the moat noble, and the enter
tainment the most worthy, that has ever
.appealed to our people for their patron
<age. There will be a full house.
See advertisement.
An Blegant Testimonial.
We saw yesterday tho handsomest and
most delightful present ever made by
fair woman’s band or suggested by grate
ful hearts.
The ladies of 8t. Paul’s Churoh as a to
ken of their high appreciation of the suc
cessful management of the Old Folks’
Concert by Mr. Gunby Jordan, presented
him with the richest, most tremendous
and beautifully ornamented, silvered
fruit cgke wo have ever seeu. This luxu
rious token was Boating in a aga of the
brightest flowers, aud adorned with a bo-
quet of the rarost extraots, and sweetest
blossoms that were ever ripened and
scented under a Southern sun. Aooom-«
panying this was a decanter of sherry of
“Yo olden time,” that tho gods might
have envied. Having sampled this re
membranoe, wo can be qualified to the
assertion that next to the concert, the
offering of tho ladies was the best thing
of the season. Whon another ootnes,
may we he there to see. We can endorae
that Methodist wine to the minutest drop.
The Military Force of Georgia,
At present there are aruiod one battery
of nrtillory (the Chatham of Savannah,
with four twelve-pound Napoleon guns)
with 70 men; three sqaudrons of cavalry,
550 men, and thirty-nine companies of in
fantry, numbering 2,418 men—total 8,088
officers and men. There are three negro
companies—one iu Macon, one in Atlanta,
and one in Havannab. There are eighty
companies in the State whioh are armed.
Georgia’s quota of arms from the General
Government is $5,000 worth per annum.
In July, tho Governor will draw this
amount. The equipments of an infantry
company cost $1,500, or $24 per man, and
$18,000 to purchase a battery. Bain-
bridge is entitled to the next battery.
Whuu the last war commenced Georgia
had only 1,400 troops. They are first rate
soldiers.
Shooting Affair in Browneeille.
Just before dark yesterday afternoon,
Mr. Harry Holland was shot in the faco
by Mr. Oeorgo Lisles. The former is a
son of Col. Lan Holland, und clerks iu
the store of Holland A Baker. Both are
about twenty years of ago. The hall
(from a Derringor) went into the ebook
and glanced upwards on the side of tho
bead. No serious results from tbo wound
are feared. It Keems that Lisles, fjorn nil
we bear, threatened to whip Holland ; so
after closing factory hours be “went for”
him. Hofland knocked him down, and
Lisles rising fired at him. After being
wouuded Holland shot at, but missed
Lisles.
It is alleged that Lisles was with a
noisy, turbuleut, disgraceful orowd, who
on the night before iu Browueviile broke
down the door of the house of a newly
married oouplo, and rocked the sloro in
which Holland was sleeping. With an
axe-helve he did some execution, but a
kick iu • the stomach settled his hash.
The fight yesterday was the consequence
of this fuss.
Bionic at the Columbus Manufactory,
The Browneville Baptist Sunday school
had a very pleasant excursion up the riv
er Thursday. Malgre some rain all Imd a
happy time aud enjoyed a bounteous
feast. Mr. Walker made a brief, appro
priate address.
The Coming Elections in Georgia.
On October 14th, members of the Leg
islature are to be chosen, and on Novem
ber 8d Congressmen. County officers are
chosen in January, 1875. In this section
thus far few candidates have been an
nounced, save for Congress. For the
“Cave of tho Winds” about half a dozen
candidates are electioneering, aud more
are expected.
Harris County.
Some more gentlemen, who have been
all over the oounty, report that the plant
ing of ootton has fallen off 12 j per cent,
and grain increased one-third.
Concert at Hamilton.
Professor Churchill, of Oolumbu*, and
others, will very soon give a ooucort in
Hamilton. They say it w ill be good.
M. ft G. Railroad.
President Wadlcy, Col. Powers, Super
intendent Clark, Actiug President Mott,
and others, passed over the road the other
day, for tbo purpose of reviewing the
road preparatory to the annual reports ot
the officers.
Improvement of Our River.
The Ldegratns of last night state that
the Senate Committee has recomtneuded
an appropriation of $25,000 for tho im
provement of the Chattahoochee aud Flint
rivors, $1,000 for the Apalachicola, aud
$5,000 for the Chattahoochee iu Alabama.
We do not know* what this last portion of
this sentence means, as all of the Chatta

The proper thing to do is, go to Acee
