Then I put a dollar in his hands.
‘What is this for? he asked, as ho
r deposited it in his waistcoat pocket and
gave me a half dollar in change.
“For a bushel of oats,” I answered.
| “Keep them until I send for them.”
•’Ah, sir,” said the landlord, with au air
virtuous resignation, “the prohib
itory law has done a world of good in
Istoppiug the sale of liquors. It's a se-
|vere law on us, bat it's a good one.
Tbaits of tub Shack.—When all the
blubber and fat has been removed from
the carcass of the whale by the Trinidad
psberman, it ia nsually towed oat and sl
owed to drift with the current as a bait
for the sharks, while large canoes, filled
omewbat in the style of wbale boats,
oltow it, to harpoon any of these fish that
> within range. Sharklog is rather
;ood in itself, and is at the same time
ery remunerative, on aooonnt of the
1'iantity of oil that may be obtained from
he liver. The shark is killed much in
the same way as the whale—being first
hsrpooned, and then lanced until it is
exhausted, after which its liver is cat out
and placed in a boat. The liver
is four or five feet in length, and
a Urge one gives as much as fifteen or
sixteen gallons of oil. Though sharks in
these parts are numorous, accidents will a
bathing, or even when boats areBwutnpi d
at sea, are rare; and they will not tou h
a human being even when in the water
alongside a whale that is btiag cot np.
Several instances are well authenticat’ d
where persons have thus fallen among
them and escaped without injury: the
shark, it is said, preferring the blubber
and the flesh of the whale to the human
flesh. There can be no doubt, however,
that if the person thus immersed were
wounded in such a manner as to oauso
blood to flow, sharks would eat him just
as readily as they do the whale. When in
great numbers, they will eat one of their
own kind that has been severely wounded,
and on such occasions rush at the body
ao fiercely as Jo force it above the sur
face.
