Will try to OaI Mart Arms.
Governor Smith is still iu the city. In
conversation the other day be stated the
supply of arms of the State was exhaust
ed. He would, however, furnish as many
of ths present organisations, who had
not received them, with guns and equip
ments as soon as thsy could bo obtained
from the United States Government,
which be hoped to be able to do in the
fall or winter.- He had no fears that the
oolored organisations would work harm,
though they were armed. Ho instanced
the case of a colored company in a not
distant county. Borne difficulty
had ocourred by whioh ths
blacks and whites bad been greatly in-
oensed against each other. This colored
military company was strongly urged by
the blacks to assist them. The captain
ordered bis men to keep aloof from the
apprehended strife, and that he knfrw his
duty and would execute the orders of the
proper State authority as soon as he re
ceived them. His positive stand quieted
his race. The Governor spoke in eom-
mondation of the aotive military spirit in
tho Htate. The white oompanie* will al
ways greatly outnumber the blaoks.
Seme Building.
The erp of hard times depresses evsry
one. Ho let all atop it. It ia of no use
to be in the dumps all the time. Be cheer
ful and speak cheerfully. Keep this up,
aud pon'U always be in a good humor.
Adopt the opposite style, and you'll be in
an awful purgatory long before you get
into the real one. Now, as something
that the melancholy men may talk about,
we may mention that io Columbus, at
various points, some quite handsome
houses are in oouree of ereotion. Mr. W.
L. Tillman's, on lower Broad street, will
perhaps be the moat stylish.

Prominent Incidents
History of Columbus
From its First Settlement in 1827, to the
W/jor Jlaid, in 18G5, compiled by John
U. Martin.
The undersigned proposes to publish, in
volume qf 150 or more pages, a work under
the above title, covering the period from the
selection qf the locality for a “ trading town*'
in 1827, to the capture and partial destruction
of the city by the Wilson Ilaid, in 1805.
The incidents will be derived mainly from its
newspapers, which will be gleaned for this
purpose with much care. It is believed that
most qf our citizens would like to have such
incidents in this compact and convenient form,
and will encourage the undertaking to the
extent qf the email amount asked for the work
Each chapter will contain short biographi
cal sketches or notices of the principal citizens
mentioned in it, who have since died. The
volume will also embrace full information
concerning the churches, factories, <fv., now
existing.
We do mol propose to publish this compila
tion with a view to making money, as the
small price asked for it will show. But
the same time we do not want to lose money
by its publication, and therefore we wish to
limit the number qf copies printed to the de
mand for the work. With this object in t
we issue this prospectus, inviting those who
desire copies qf the volume to send in their
namea
The price will be one dollar per copy for
a pamphlet bound volume, printed on paper
like the specimen sheet issued. A small
number of copies will also be issued on a su
perior article qf paper for f l 30 per copy.
Payable when the work is delivered, which
will be some time next Fall.
