ware carried bafdfe Jutice Gatewood on

them to jail. Charles Perry turned State's

STOCK aKPBMKSTKD.
John Pubody, Thu. NnckoUa and C.
B. Grimu were, on motion, appointed a
committee to ascertain If a majority of
stock wu represented. They reported it
was, after ulling the namu of Col. Wad.

On motion, the reports were regarded
as having bun read, and they were
adopted. We have previously summarised
these reports.

Aid. C. A. Redd nominated the former
Board, and the ballot oommenoed.
On motion, N. P. Banka, O. A. Redd
and P. H. Perry were appointed a com
mittee to manage the elution.
The following wu the ruult i
President-William M. Wadley.
Directors—R. L. Mott, L. T. Dawning,
John Peabody, H. U. Upping, Columbus;
Dr. N. P. Banks, Enon, Bullock oonnty,
Ala.; Joel D. Murpbree, Troy, Ala.
No other ticket wu proposed ; eaoh re
ceived 8,812 votes, and all wets declared
duly eluted.
■■AVY TAXATION BY ALAnAMA.
Mr. Peabody moved that a oommittee
of three be appointed to memorialise the
Legislature of Alabama to redcoe the
huvy tax on this and other roads—said
ooumittu to enduvor to secure the co
operation of other oompaniu in the State
in obtaining the object desired.
The motion wu adopted, and M. P.
Banks of Bnllook oounty, I. A. Wilson of
Union Springs, and J, D. Murpbree of
Troy, were appointed said oommittu.
Mr. Pubody, after making his asotion,
stated that while the net earnings of the
road for the year bad bun only 84,-
24!) G3, the oompany hu paid the State
$6,7U3 20—considerably more than its in-
oome. This wu a tax of over 130 per
oeut. on the net profits and 3 per rent, on
the gross earniogc. No merehant or plan
tar could stand saoh an assessment. It
is bad enough to taka all your profits for
taxsa; but when taxes amount to more
than yonr earnings they become very se
vere. He wu confident the Legislature
bad not fully and urefully considered the
matter in all its bearings, end believed it
would sot fairly when the snbjeot was
brought before them.
In addition $320 were paid u oonnty
tax. Had the oountiu the same power
they had several years ago, the Stele and
oounty taxes would have amounted to
some $13,000.
While this company had in a year paid
to Alabama $0,703 20, all the roads in
Georgia, at the lowut estimate valued at
thirty millions, aud the long linu de
claring dividenda, paid into the Treasury
of that State only some $10,000. This
road then pays within some $3,237 of the
amount that all thou in Georgia do.
Thia road wu bnilt, too, with private
funda, and reoeived no aid from the
BUte.
ANNUAL TAU TO OHAIBltAN.
Ou motion of Alderman Redd, a free
annual pus wu unanimously voted the
ehairuau of the meeting.
about rasa rassas.
Thoe. Nuckolls moved that in lieu of
the present system of passing atoekhald
ere free to and from the annual meetings,
that eaoh stockholder be given a pus for
170 milu, twice the length of the road.
This wu opposed by Maura. Eppiog.
Peabody, Downiug and others, on the
ground of impraotisability, annoyanoe,
and the lou it would ineur. A man
would ull a share of stock to get a tioke*.
for bis neighbor, and he who held one
share would get u muoh as the one who
owned hundreds. Stockholders would
not attend the annual meetings, bnt soma
to Columbus on other timM.
President Wadley called attention to
the olou of his annual report, where it
wu stated expenaee had been reduoed to
tbs lowest possible limit, and au iueresee
of business wu all that oouid keep up the
property. Depending upon another oom-
pany to meet the yearly interest, must
ultimately force a ule of the property.
He had hopes the oompany would extri-
oats itself from its difficulties. Though
fainter now than aver, he still had hopes.
If the resolution was put, he would in
sist on a vote by stock.
Mr. Nuokolls withdrew his motion.
Meeting adjourned.

The Financial Chronicle of New Yofk
hu given the acreage of cotton planted
this year and tho probable yield, which.
M a matter of internet, wo have

AU the cotton States eiocpt Texu
shows a deer a see in acreage of six to
twelve pet oent. from last year. Georgia
show a deereeea of ten per cent; Ala
bama, twelve; Florida, nine; Texu, an
inoreau of eight per cent
The total acreage is 9,033,828, against
8,802,813 lest year, showing a decrease ef
768,992
After making a statement of the com
parative acreage and produot, the Chroni
cle says ; “If the eeeson is vefy unfavora
ble, like that of 1871-72, when the yield
wu only 108 pounds per acre, the total
crop would be (net weight 444 pounds)
3,400,000 bales; or, if it ^qoal the nn-
i anally good season of 1870-71, when the

crap would be 8,780,000; or, if similar to
1872-73, 193 pounds per acre, it would
be abont 4,000,000 bales" The margins—
8,400,000 to 4,4OO,OO0—are certainly wide
enough.
The Chronicle thinks on lut yrnr'a
acreage, had we a full crop, we ahonld
have obtained about five million bales, if
eo mnoh oouid have been gathered.
