Wbioh bae the power over tbe Mormons?
Who among oa shall ait in Judgment npon
them, and who is to “throw the find
■tone?"’ Shall it ba that Christian who,
following the shadow for the rabetanoe,
imagines that it is the mods of applies,
tion and tha amount of water whieh seals
the -effioray of an ordinance ? Nor yet
should it be he who pnritanically shnta
humanity off from all amusements, and
solemnly arera the simple ornamentation
of tha body can damn tha aoul. That
sect which systematically and boactingly
oalle itself “Tha Church," cannot prodnoe
unprejudiced Jndgae for this decision,
Ha who, with his hand on heart, oan sol-
amuly arar that humanity haa become
God-like, infallible, or be who thinks a
God docs aeleot for eternal damnation
oertain of bta created obildren, can bnt
hare onesided views of the Latter Day
Saints. Let ns pause, then, before we
oondsmn their vagaries. That the Mor
mons are ainoere in tbair faith, I do not
doubt. Buoh aaoriflcee, snob devotion,
such sublime and enduring faith, is
seldom seen. Polygamy, as it treads
down the laws of man, and of civilization,
aa it degrades woman and makes man
only worse, is a side issue of this people,
which demands an early destruction.
Three-fourths of the Mormons have but
ona wife. There are more melee in Utah
than females. While ail Mormons are
ready to defend the polygamic dootrine,
yet the minority practice it. This minor -
. ity is oomposed of tha leaden, the rich
, of the “kingdom.” About one-fourth of
i tbe Mormon men are practical bigamists
r polygamists.

t Abath in Salt Lake! Whet a queer
*8 s V*»»tion! Yon eannot sink. Water so
«0ae that four buoketfnls make one of
t; HN ■» bnoyent that the heaviest man
i like cork. It ie very difficult to
i in 8elt Lake, bnt the easiest tbiag
the world is to float.
Foer miles ont from the oity are the
sulphur springs. Tha water is very
m. Tbe springe are remarkable for
s their bealiog qualities and the deligbtfu
aeneatiou given to bethem. Angry con
troversy as to the ownership of these
springs has resulted in mnrder, litigation,
threats and assassination. A Gentile took
possession. Tbe Hormona did not like
that, and the Gentile was selected “and
Axed."
There is a diamond with a history to it
in this town. Its nps and dowus mark
the ways of kingdoms and orowns. Its
path is strewn with the flowers of ro-
manoe. Its history give* the whims of
fortune. Tbia diamond—wbioh is held at
(12,000 in gold—is said to have been
presented to a Spanish Euler by an East
ern PrUos. Queen Isabella, upon her
accession, became the Inoky owner. Her
glory departed, and with it her loose
change, and tbs jewel was sold to a Lon
don jeweler. Amerieana being naturally
great fools, a New York house bought it,
and found jnst inch a fellow as they were
looking for, and ha bought it. This sin
ner, be it to his glory said, became sorry
and traded it for (20,000 worth of mining
atook. He etraek it rioh—eold ont for
(80,000 profit. The new holder of the
changing diamond naturally soon beoame
bard up, and Meaare. Joalin A Perk, large
jewelera, bought it of him, and ere wait
ing for a new craxy-man to oome along
and bnyit.
In thirty miles of Salt Lake there ere a
greet many mine*. Moat of these mines
yield lead and lilvar—some of tham iron
and oopper. These mountains are rioh in
treasures. Bingham Canyon, Amerioan
Fork and Little Cottonwood Canyons, ara
toll of mines. Throagh .the kindness of
Mr. Bsrker, Paymaster, we were allowed
a visit to the oelebrated Flag Stsff Silver
Mines. This trip being so entirely novel,
wee greatly anjoyad by tbs three or foer
Georgians who went down in the bowels
of the earth. Part of this trip was up a
narrow-gauge—the Wahaatoh A Jordan
Valley Bailroed. Aa a feat of engineering
this road ie something remarkable. Bight
up the mountains, tbe grade it 287 feet to
the mile. This ie too much to go straight
np on, end so the rsilrosd is a lot of V’s.
The train goes np ons prong of the V,
and bsoks np the other. From the tar-
minus of this railroad a ride, mnstang
back, over eight miles of the rookiest,
wildest, strangest road, bringa ua to the
Ore House of the “Flag Staff.” Bight
down this oanyon runs a oreek of melted
snow—so impetuous, so qniok, so noisy,
so elesr, that it demands your attention
end obains it. Abruptly np on either aide
rises an abrupt wall of rook 2,000 fast
high. From tbe foot of the mountain to
the mine we are serried in e tramway,
which goeB np 1500 feet. The eagle of
inclination is abont 50 degrees.
Dr. V., of North Georgia, ons of oor
party, has given himeelf over to mis
ery ; and when this rids presents itself
bis timidity crops ont in arguments and
conundrums. “Boys, this pony was aa
rough as a persimmon; the dost was in
sufferable ae short rations; but, Great;
Heavens! what ie all that to the faot that
this rope might break, while we are goieg
np this mountain?” The Doctor tried
bard to get some Me to oomplein, that he
might be one of tbe happy, contented
ones, and laegh, bnt had to break down,
getting perfeotly exasperated at tbe phil
osophic answers we, dnst-eovered, pony-
bucked, sun-warmed, seekers after infor
mation, gave him. Now that he was him
self, his pent np soul told its troubles.
The Doetor had hardly got seated in the
car before be concluded it wee beat to
walk np, and commeneod to unload him
self, and just then away we ehot. Bight
np, only about one minnte to make the
trip. The boys insisted, daring the whole
ascent, that the Doctor should look back
down the ooyon at the toenery, (they had
heard this made one eee-eiok and giddy),
bnt tbe Doctor grimly held on tbe front
of tbe ear, shot hie eyes and eeid “the
thing is dangerous, you may laugh as
much as you please.”
This mine has a stock of one and VMf
millions. The renowned “Emma” mine,
jnst a atone throw to the east, is e live
million mine—both owned by English com
panies. We found as Superintendent of
this mine, Mr. Geo. Collins, an old miner
from Mississippi. Like all other South
erners ont here he was exoeedingly glad
to see ns. Mr. Collins has the reputation
of being the beet miner in Utah. Twen
ty-four years ago he cotumenoed tbia wild
life. Hie experience bae been extensive,
he having mined in California, Nevada,
Mexico, Arizona and Utah.
It is quite cool np here, 9,800 feet above
the sea—ao oold at night and morning
that we have a Are, and blankets feel glo
riously good. Whst an experience for a
Georgian ! Throwing enow-balls in July!
Yea; snow ie all around us—five, ten,
fifteen feet deep in tbe drifts. We eat it,
made snow-balls of it, rods through it.
Down into the mine we went—seven
hundred and fifty feet in tbe earth.
Everybody carries his eandle, and every,
body going down the abaft drops tatlhw
on the Doctor. The Dootor ie miserable,
and, of course, happy. Striking a short
shaft, the Dootor asked a miner how deep
it, sod be remarked only a step; and
the Doolor stepped. As hs picked
himself up out of the mud eight feet be.
low, be very reasonably remarked: “Go
ing up a mountain is absolutely child's
play to jumping down one."
Tbe ore of this mine yields shout sixty,
five per oent. of lead, thirty to fifty
onnees of silver, end two ennoes of gold
per ton. There is abont fifty to seventy
tons removed per day. It takes brains,
ore and money to rnn a mine. The ex
penditures are enormous; the yield gnesa
work; tha labor severs and ooatly, and
litigation almost certain. Eighty miners
are engaged in tbia mine. Their pay ie
from $2 to (4 50 per day; moat of them
getting $8 to (8 50 per day. Like all
men of their class, they are always “jnst
ont” of oash. Minas are worked night
and day. Our Handy-Andy (the Doetor)
fell off hie mustang only once on tbe re
turn, and, beyond a fow bruises, found
little to interest himself with.
Yours, truly,
WxsrwABn Ho!
