An Interview With Xllten.
[From the Brooklyn Union, July 15.]
A Union reporter called on .Mr. Tilton
' uoruiug for tbe purpoeo of asking m‘u | Pull Stock of Bagging and Ties on hand.
irheihar there were any foundHtioua for
be rumors that be and Mrs. Tilton had
parated. Mr. Tilton was fouud in bis
itudy busily ougaged writing. At firnt he
tdeoliued to have a word to hay on the sub*
: jeot and hoped the reporter would rofrain
from aakiiig him auy questions. The re*
porter replied that be only wanted one
j word, “Yes,” or “No,” and that if the ru-
nors were false the Union would oontra*
liot them.
Mr. Tilton replied: “No statements oou-
•rning Mrs. Tilton and her intentions
which have appeared in the newspapers
were authorized by me, nor have they iu
uny way proceeded from me. If you
would excuse me, you will allow me to de*
cliue making auy further communica
tions.”
“One question more, Mr. Tilton,” con
tinued the reported.
“Yes, what is it ?” asked Mr. Tilton.
“lb is stated,” sard the reporter, “that
|you knew nothing of an investigating
committee having been appoiuted by
Plymouth Church uatil it had been iu Be-
(Ttt session two weeks. Is this true ?”
“Yea,” responded Mr. Tilton, “quite,
he first iutiiuatiou which I had or the
atenoe of any such oommittee was an
nounuemeut made to me laat Thursday
ght, by Mrs. Tilton, who informed me
i ner coiniug in after having been, aa 1

to her iu adv.ru ce by that lawyer for the
purpose of clearing Mr. Beecher of the
vhsrgea aud imputations made against
him by the public papers in connection
with her name. Sho had been informed,
she told rue, that her testimony, if given
as required, would put an end to the
trouble aud she was willing to say any
thing for tire oauaa of peace and reli
gion ”
“If not troubling you too maob, let me
intrude upon yoa another question,” said
tue reporier. “There is a report that
the owe is to be compromised. Is this
corraot ?”
“1 know nothing of future events,” re
sponded Mr. Tilton. “I only know my
present du*y, which is to make the swora
statement which 1 have promised to the
oommittee of tbe exact facts in the case.
This statement I was at work oa when
yoa entered the room, and when it is
complete 1 shall accompany it with my
oath as to its accuracy. I have tried it
for four years, u*ing my best wit, which
has proved small, in endeavoring to cloak
and conceal the faots which are now to bo
divulged. The responsibility of divulg
ing them belongs not to me, for 1 would
rather beep them buried. This responsi
bility belongs to Mr. Beecher, who has
l commissioned six men of his own church
\ to examine into faots which, wheu they
are made known, will

f nothing. I shall acoept none. It is a day
\ot buttle aud death !’
“Is Mrs. Tiltou in the oity ?” the re-
ipor f" u'iied.
•*. odieve so,” was the answer.
“Are your children with you or Mrs.
Tilton ?” inquired the reporter.
“They are with me,” said Mr. Tilton.
BUMOB OF A COMPROMISE.
Bbooklyn, July 18.— It is rumored that
heodore Tiitou was to sail for Europe by
Cuaard steamship Algeria this moro-
ig. It was circulated in Brooklyn last
ght that inquiry was made at Tilton's
•use as to the troth of the report, but
information was obtained. It created
me little excitement, bat it is believed
at Tilton is still in the country prepar-
ig his written statemont for the Ply-
uth Church investigating oommittee.
