in Atlanta, a few days ago, has nearly

—On Monday thirty shares of Langley

—Hon. Thos. Elimonton, County Treas
urer of Spalding oounty, died last week.
His age was about 73 years. e
—Angus MoAlpine, a bright boy, son of
Mrs. MoAlpine, of Clarksville, Ga., acci
dentally shut himself through the head
wtth a pistol, on Tuesday.
—There were shipped from Snvannsh
by the steamships Herman Livingstone
and Wyoming, lust Friday, 18,123 water
melons for New York and Philadelphia.
—Mr. Robert A. White, a eitizen of
Atlanta, wok drowned in the Tecneasee
river, at Chsttnnooga, on Monday, while
he was Bw.imming in it. His body was
recovered.
—Dr. E. H Myers, President of Wes
leyan Female College at Mseon, has re
signed, to taka effect in Jannary next;
and Prof. W. C. Bass has been elected to
the poeition.
—Robert Marshall, colored, ent Gilbert
King, also colored, so deeply in the head
with a hatchet, in Augusta on Sunday
night, that King's Ufa ia despaired of.
Marshall was arrested.
—The Atlanta Comtitution learns that
an altercation occurred on Monday at Red
Oak, between Dr. Lofton and a colored
man named Pinaon, in whioh the lnttrr
was killed by the former. No partionlavs
given.
—Gov. Smith has commissioned Charles
M. MoGlure, Ordinary of Cherokee aonn-
ty ; C. C. Welters, Tax Collector of Col-

negro struck Churchill with a stick, snl
the latter stabbed him with a pooket-knife,
the blade breaking off in his side. The
negro is in a critioal condition.
—The Lumpkin Independent tells this

The constable went for his cost, but re-

—Rome has a sensation, and, aocording
to the Courier, thinks herself “s city in
fact,” beoanse a white infant waa found
on a door-step on Monday morning. The
little w»if was comfortably deposited in
one bundle, and another contained its
clothing, ’plenty of it and wall mode.
Pinned to the child's dress was the snm
of ills, and a note requesting the colored
woman at wboe» door it was left to take
acre of the baby, and to communicate
' with a friend of the mother at Helena,
i., when more money waa wanted.
Only initials were given. The kind enl-
ored woman resolved to do as requested,
and to taka good oare of the child.

Order far Sending Troepn te Vicks
burg Temporarily Suspended.
Washington, July 22.—The protest of
prominent oilmens of Vinkaburg, includ
ing the Mayor and Postmaster, against
Davis’demand for troupe was rqo*i>sd
by the Secretary of War this morning,
and at once forwarded' t6'the President at
Patterson, N. J.
The President telegraphed lost night his
approval of the nation.of the Secretary in
sondiug troops to Vicksburg, and request
ed that all dispatches on the snbject be
forwarded to him at Long Brauob, and
authorized the Beor'e'tary to use his dis
cretion in tho matter.
The Mayor and postmaMer claim there
is no necessity whatever for troops. Sec
retary Belknap also this morning reeeived
from acting Govi Daviv a telegram stating
that particulars had been forwarded by
mail, and suspended the order directiog
that troops should be sent to Vioksbnrg
until the etatement of DsVia is received.

tured the faubourg. The Republicans
