The prospect for a prosperous business
in the fall is very encouraging. We are
certain of a good corn crop. Much small
grain has been harvested, and cotton is
very promising. Only one more dull
month remains to be spanned, and then,
thanks to a kind Providence, a season of
plenty is promised.
Funny Caterpillar Rumors.
People must have something to talk
about, and dull times, caterpillars and
cotton crops are the prevailing themes.
A rather amusing incident occurred on
one of the corners a day or two ago. A
party was speaking of the destruction on
two or more plantations below here. Ac
cording to bis story tho cotton stalks on
these places were literally covered with
the destructive worms which were con
suming both leaves, bolls, Ac. The bulls
around felt happy. A manager on one
of the plantations happened to be on the
outside of the hearers. All he had to say
was that he had left one of the places that
morning, and there were no caterpillars
there when he loft. Tho merchants breath
ed eaaior.
Fish Ronds.
Many have been or are to be estab
lished in this section. Mr. J. T. Holland
is constructing a charming little lake on
his place over the river, and will stock it
from Mr. Penn Yonge’s pond. The heavy
rain of Huuday destroyed a portion of
his dam, but he has nearly rebuilt it.
Colonel John Maund, of Talbot county,
has already a goodly-sized pond. He
tells us he intends constructing an im
mense one for the public. His idea is to
charge those who search for the finny
tribe a reasonable price for the privilege
—a small sum per hour. The idea is a
good one. Many would be glad to avail
tbemsolves of such an opportunity.
Stealing Clothes by the Wholesale,
A negro woman, lately from Chatta
hoochee county, allogod to bo crazy, was
employed to wash clothing by a colored
family. She says tho/ would not pay her.
That night she took from the place a tub
half full of crockery, a wash-board, and
thirteen pieces of clothing. Tho latter
she tied around her neck and waist. Po
licemen discovering and pursuing, she
dropped the tub and board, but retaining
the clolhiug out ran tho officers to the
brickyard, where the fugitive was arrest
ed by some negroes. The woman is al
leged to bo crazy. She has been placed
iu the guard house. Sho is reported to
be a racer of tho first class.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS POSTPONED.
The election of officers was next in or
der—President, two Vice Presidents and
a Secretary and Treasurer. Several gen
tlemen were proposed. Those nominated
for President, Col. R. L, Mott (who posi
tively declined ,because of too frequent
absence from the city,) Maj. Allen, Mr.
Boatrite and others declined the use of
their names. Maj. Allen thought in the
selection of officers, the [Chamber should
endeavor to combine men of talent, en
ergy, capital and influence.
After some pleasant and useful sugges
tions, a motion, proposod by several mem
bers, that the eleotion be postponed un
til Wednesday two weeks, was adopted
by a voto of 18 to 12.
Members generally concurred that there
was uo need of hurry, and that by delay
and giving attention to tho matter, the
very best combination could bo obtained.
In tho meantime the Chamber could
trausact business under its present pro

Scnzxcx’s Sea Weid Tonic.—In the atmosphere
oxperieucod here during the summer months, tho
lethargy produced by tho heat takes away the de
sire for wholesome food, and frequent perspira
tions reduce bodily energy, particularly those
suffering from the effects of debilitatiug diseases.
In order to keep a natural healthful activity of
the system, we must resort to artificial means.
For this purpose Schenck’s SeaWeed Tonic is very
effectual. A few doses will creato an appetite and
give fresh vigor to the enervated body. For dys
pepsia, it is invaluable. Many eminent physicians
have doubted whether dyspepsia can bo perma
nently cured by the drugs which are generally
employed for that purpose. The Sea Weed Tonic
in its nature is totally different from such drugs.
It contains no corrosive minerals or acids; in fuel
it assists the regular operations of uature, and
supplies her deficiencies. The tonic in it* nature
so much resembles the gastric juice that it is al
most identical with that fluid. The gastric juice
is the natural solvent which, in a healthy condi
tion of the body, causes the food to be digested;
and when this juice is not excreted in snfficiont
quantities, indigestion, with all its distressing
symptoms, follow*. The Sea Weed Tonic performs
the duty of the gastric juioe when the latter Is
deficient. Sohenck’s Sea Weed Tonic sold by all
druggists.
