List night we went to hear the Hon.
B. H. Hill address the Demoonoy at the
Oonrt-honre. Hie speech was not worthy
the high repatation aooorded him. It was
too mmbliag, end not snfleiently open

purposes of the Badical patty, the objeot
of the Oivil Bights bill, and whet was to
be done to carry the nest Presidential
election. He quoted from his LaOrange
speech of 1868, to show that his predic
tion* in regard to the negro had been ful
filled.
Ur. Hill denied that he ever told “H.
V. B." that he was for Grant for a third
term, aud accused newspapers of always
lisrcpraeenting Urn. He solemnly de-

Editor Enquirer-Sun : I have a small
■aid of cotton wbieh is drsndfally infest-
with what my nsighbom term “Bast,”
rad ss it ia a disease so direful in its ef
fects, I hope you will allow me epeoa in
your interesting oolumns to offer a few
oomtsenla—the result of some observa
tion.
I have just walked through it, and I
find the disease to be (as msuy farmers
already know) nothing more nor less then
numberless email ineeete, wbioh, I presume,
the scientists would call “parasites.” I
-JnaA lo kiUsf9
were invisible to the asked eye, but I find
this a mistake ; the eotive little fellows
otn readily ba seen without the aid of
glass of any kind—but not well enough
obtain a definite description. They
begin their ravages about the oentre and
on tha under aide «f the leaf, rad spread
until it is dried to a crisp end fells off.
Upon examiuiog e leaf upon which they
had jost appeared, I found what named
to be *gg* traveling inseots, and a email
black fly, with pearly-wbite wings, pro
jecting retber vertically from the body.
Hence I deduce the following theory, and
aak youraelf end your readers ia it cor
rect 7 The fly deposits the egg which fie-
velopes the insect that oommits the depre
dation. How the fly is reproduced again
do not know, hot presame it puses
through the ohryselis state, similar to the
oalerpillar fly.
The ru.t inseot does not spread as rap.
idly as the oaterpillar, but does its work
of destruction quite as thoroughly,
think, passing through it into parts not
affected, assists it in spreading.
Older farmers tell me that the peculiar
rust wbioh is in my ootton originated from
‘poke stalk." I found one near the
place it began, end therefore oondode
that it ia possible. Ooe of my neighbor's
■ays a “poke stalk” grew np in a hollow
stomp in the centre of hie field, end the
began from thia point and apread
over the entire field. Another telle me
that ha hat five acres of fresh land cotton
this year almost rained by nut from s
‘poke stalk."
I mention these faots for the benefit of
those, if any there be, who may not be
aware that the poke stalk is a dangerous
enemy to cotton. The information oame
too lat« to aeve my cotton, thia year, bat
I hope it may benefit others as well as
myself next.
In oonolasion, Mr. Editor, allow me lo
oak your eoientiflo readers if nut is so
inseot, (end I presume dona will doubt
it) oonld it not be effectually checked in
its insipieney by the ase of Peru Green
or some similar preparation 7 It seems to
me it oonld, end at trifling ooet. I hope
some one will make the experiment end
report the result.
Cora oropa in this section ere good, and
cotton is also tolerably good, but not so
good as oorn. Caterpillars are in onr
midst, bnt not yet in greet numbers. We
are looking for them ten thousand strong.

of her testimony absolutely required it.

his suspictou of Mr. Beeoher arose were
necssserily alluded to. The improper ca

in general denial of any improper intima
