Alta California.] Hammebfmt, June 26.—Wo arrived here on the longest day in the year, alter a passage of fourteen days fruui (Juris- liana.n3, Norway. Wo bad a rough p is- page part of the time when outside of the the inlands—rain nluiont every day, and cold as Greenland; we Bhivered in over- coats when on deck in the latter days of Jane. The scenery, however, is grand, surpassing that of the Alps and. the oast led librae. There are thonsjuds of moun tains covered with snow, and more pic turesque than any we have ever seen. Some are more than four thousand feet in height, and have many watei falls, fed by the welling snow. A part of the way there are mountains on both Bides. As for inlands, there are thousands of them, with a vapor hanging over them morning and evening, which is very beautiful. Our first landing in Norway was Chris- tiansand. Mrs. K. and myself took a trough the city. We found he streets clean, broad and straight, and the houses very neat. The population of he place is 11,468. Many of tho ladies are beautiful; most of them are blondes, **hnd all have good figures. Our next stopping place was Bergen, a city of 80,25*2 inhabitants. Its principal trade Is fish. A professor living there told me that last year it rained eleven months and ••ven days. A Norwegian gentleman who passed through Bergen nine vears ago 'luring a heavy rain, when on his way to America, has just returned, and artlessly Inquired if it had been raining ever since. *9* Rll came to the oonolusion that it had. * There is at Bergen a museum with the Bast collection of fish that I have ever ■sen, comprising the skeletons of three Ifhales from R6venty*flve to eighty feet long, large sharks, and many varieties of the flrtuy tribe. Every day at noon a mil itary band plays on the promenade—that when it is not raining. There is one **good, wide street in the city. The stores * are small. There is a large fish market. The city lies on a steep hill, some of the streets being as steep as Olay street. We next stopped at Throndhjem, a city of [_ 20,858 people, founded in A. D. 007 by Ting Olaf Treygvason, upon the seat of he old Scandinavian oity Nidoros. It was he seat of government and remained the Apitnl of Norway down to the time of its Dion with Denmark, when Christiana as made the capital. The city is prettily |tuated on a bay at the mouth of the Nid. here is a fine old cathedral here, which, ording to an artiole of the constitution 1814, is to remain the place of irouatiou of the Norwegian sovereigns, lie Bishop of Throndhjem performs the tremony. Last year Oscar II. and Dean Sophie were crowned hero. The nroh-yard contains many old monu- #nts. The graves were nearly all dcc- ated with artificial or natural flowers, latter grown in the houses, on ac- iounfc of the cold. There is a railway, of I gauge of three feet and six inches, run ning to Storen, the trains making a speed pf ten miles an hour. There are two peautiful and very rapid cascades three milos from the oity, one 90 feet high aud 118 feet wide; the other 82 feet high and [122 feet wide. There are a number of Hills below them; also, furnaces for uelting copper and chrome works, there is a museum, with a small collec tion. The streets are wide and straight. After leaving Throndhjem the coast con tinues exoeed ngly mountainous. As we approached the Targhalten there was a rush to the deck, but the fog was so dense that wo could not see the top. It is a t curious rock, a thousand feet high, per orated 500 foot above the sea by a hole (iveuty feet high and forty wide. Soon fter we passed Horseman’s Island, doh has tho appearance of a giaut horseback swimming through the Next we visited Hammerfest, the b northerly town in the world. It has opulation of 2,067. There are many plaudors aud Finlanders in the town. ) principal business in cod liver oil aud , aud the odor from the oil makes it try disagreeable. Reindeer and goats ound here, while there are but six is in the town. I have never before to many children in so small a town, on't know whether it is because of the diet or thq long winter nights, but j disconsolate childless conple had bet- F coqio and spend a season here. The l sets here on November 17th and does . b rise again until January 28th. Chil ian go to school with lanterns for about l week In the summer the sun does b set from the 1st of June till the 22d | July. There is no chanoe for hotel* •peis to make any money on candles, ; they do in Germany and France. I 4 my photograph taken by the raid* ght sun. You get demoralized here. K. has already. She sits up to 1 and l o'olock knitting socks, waiting for night i come. On the 27th of Jnne the Lap* nders brought many ohildren into town have them baptized or confirmed, dndeers you can sea fifty at a time on |b side hills, and goats by the hundred. I Juno 23d (called here St. Hans’ Day) Midsummer Day, they kindled bonfires {the sides of the mountains around the i and had a jolly time. The weather ^horrible. The thermometer stands i four to five Reaumur. There is one el here, and its management might be |ly improved, although the landlady is \ and obliging. We have fish and fleer for breakfast, reindeer and fish ' oner, and for supper some more fish aindeer. This jumping-off place ia htude 70 40 11.3. This is out on a pillar, surmounted by a bronze w *ith projecting axis, indicating the plane of the celestial pole; and on two * . ntdas of the pillar are inscriptions in Latin and Nor woman that this is an im portant station, though not terminal; that it is on tho north cape of the great European arc of meridian, the southern termination being on the meridian. It was undertaken by the sovereigns of Norway, Sweden and Russia in 1810**52. On the same spot, or nearly so, Gen. Sa- bina made an important series of pondu- • lum experiments in 1823. Fughenaes was one of tho chain of stations extend ing nearly from tho equator to the pole, at which pendulum observations wore made for obtaining the variations of grav ity on the earth's surface.
