to receipt for the same. We oommend
huu ss a gentleman in every way worthy
of confluence.
Aw Eccentric Warrior.
The Btoriea told of the celebrated Rus
sian Marshal Suvoroff display better than
whole pages of description the wonderful
way in which he oontrired to adept him
self to the rude spirits with whom be had
to dealp without losing one jot of hiB au
thority.
What Napoleon was to the French, Bu-
voroff was to the Russian army—now jest
ing with a soldier, and now rebnking a
General; one day sharing a ration of
blaolc bread besides a bivouo fire, and the
next speaking as an equal to princes and
potentates. In faet, the two great spon
sors of Russian wit form a most pictur
esque contrast. Balkaireff was very much
the character of a spaniel in a liou’s cage
I, —admiring even while mocking him with
" a half waggish, half affectionate familiari-
| ty, perpetually forgiven. Bovoroff comes
before ns an uncrowned king, one whose
authority needed no outward symbol; an
autocrat of nature's making, full of rough,
hearty familiarity that was in no danger
of breeding contempt, and surrounded by
men who enjoyed the bonhommfe, while
they dreaded the displeasure of the little
-jrag-nosud, grimy man, who was, in their
‘eyes, the incarnation of earthly power and
u, grandeur.
J it must be owned, however, that in his
own peculiar vein of pleasantry the old
. Marshal more than once met with his
match. One of his favorite jokes was to
confuse a man by asking him unexpect
edly :
“How many stare are there in the
sky f"
On one ocoasion he put this question to
one of hie sentries on a bitter January
night, suoh as only Russia ean produce.
The soldier, not a bit disturbed, answered
coolly:
“Wait a little and I'll tell you,” and he
deliberately began to ooont “one, two,
three,” etc.
In this way ha gravely went on to a
undred, at whioh point Suvoroff, who
as already half frozen, thought it high
me to ride off—not, however, without
tpriring the name of the ready reckoner.
The next day the latter found himself
romoted, and the story—which Suvoroff
Id with great glee to his staff—speedily
ade its way through the army.
On another ocoasion one of his gene
ts of a division sent him a sergeant wi b
ispatohes, at the same time reconrmend-
~ g the bearer to Suvoroff’s notioe. The
arshal, as usual, proceeded to test him
a aeries of whimsical questions-,
ut the cateohumen was equal to the oc-
•ion.
•How far is it to the moon ?" asked
vorofl.
•Two of your Excellency's forced
arches," responded the sergeant.
“Suppose you were blockaded, and hnd
provisions left, how would you supply
ourself!"
“From the enemy.”
“How many fish are there in the sea?”
“As many as have not been caught."
: And so the examination went on, till
jnvoroff, fiuiliug his now acquaintance
jnueri at all points, at length asked hi m,
• a ttusl poser—
? “What is the difference between your
Diodel anil ujy-eif ?”
“The ditf-ieuee ia this,” replied tbo
oldier, ooolly, “my colonel eau uot make
ne a ouptaiu, but your Excellency hai
J«ly to say the word,”
i'obuvor. ff, struck by his shrewdness,
lapt his eye upon the man, and in no
tng time after aotually gave him the
HeeiUcd promotion.
