That experiment has been tried once, and proved a drawback to the city. While it was true the city received something from tilt; proceeds of the tolls, it did not counterbalance the trade lost to the city. It was tho means of building up Girard and Brownevillo, for peo ple will not pay to come into our town if they ran find a market else where. To-duy, we have the election for county officers, for the ensuing two years. There are a number of candidates in the field, any of whom would make good officers. The election laws are made pointed by the last Legislature, and hence, no mana ger is allowed to take money for taxes, but taxes muni be paid to the Tax Collec tor only. A letter from the Comptroller to Mr. Frazier, Tax Collector, instructs him that no one can vote who has not paid all taxes required of him.
