A tight oecured bet wtvn two white men
at tfeo polls yesterday. No damage done.
No Mayor's Court yesterday, but from
appearances late last evening, then* was
a good prospect for a huge one this morn
ing.
Nearly one thousand of the white men
did not vote yesterday, because they had
delayed paying their taxon, and during
the day, the American citizens monopo
lized the entrance to the Tax Collector's
office. They had to vote or they could
not handle any currency, so the whites
give them a fair chance.
We saw one man who know his man was
going to be elected, and offered to bet on
it.

The politeness of a young lady iu the
city, is Instanced in this way. She went to
church last Sunday night, and after the
sermon, the hat was handed around. As
It was extended towards her, she said,
“No I thank you." Recollecting what a
mistake she had made, she hastily took
some change out of a gentleman’s hand,
who wins sitting next to her, and said, “X

If uverly l.unt Night.
It rained during the early part of tlie
night, but notwithstanding there was a
very flue audience to witness the exhibi
tion of Haverly’s Minstrels. This is with
out a doubt the beet combination that lias
for a long time apjxmrod on our stage.
Mr. Haverly was the proprietor of Cal
Wagner’s Minstrels, but In this ho lias
roserved onougo of the old, and added
valuable new men, to make his entertain
ment more attractive than ever. The
opening concert was unexceptionable.
The song, “you will never miss the water
until the well runs dry,” by the fine tenor,
Mr. Dixon, was applauded, and won the
hearts of the audience. The “Black
Dutchman," by D. L. Morris, was very
laughable, and was enjoyed by everybody.
“Primrose and West,” Milt Barlow and
George WLI son, kept the house in a per
fect good humor.
We wish that all troupes who conic be
fore a Columbus audience would employ
such talent as Mr. Haverly has in his
minstrel combination.

Colummjs, Jan. ('., 1875.
Mr: Editor:—One of tlie acta of the
last session of the City Council con
veys the impression that it is their
purpose to give the family of the.
late Marshal the salary which would
have been his had he lived. We have
no comment to make upon this—
but only to suggest, would it not
bo just that the widows who were
made such by the casualties of
the late war, be equally objects of
compassion. Numbers of them have
large families to raise and educate
and their all consists In a shelter
which Is sold for taxes if they are so
unfortunate as not to be able to
[>ay them. “Fair play is a jewel."
Would it not be simple justice to
them, while the Council is in a gene
rous mood,! to look a little to their
claims and deal as gently with the
soldiers’ widows as with the widow
of the late Marshal. Citizen.
