A. roguish citizen who stood near him, watched iiis undis guised wonder attentively, and draw ing near, entrre I into conversation with him. He was “down from Ver mont, arter work, and wanted to get a ehunee on one o’ these railroads.” “Dili”said the joker, “why don't you go and see the suiK-rintendent V” "Waal, would it' I knew wliero to find him.” “Oh, well, eomo along with mo: I’m going right by bis oflioo.” And aeeordinglv off went the twain straight to the store to that demurest of all hoaxers, Jem li.. who stood like a patriarchal sfidor waiting for an unsophisticated human lly that migltt flounder in his net. “Ah!” said the wag who acted as pilot, “there lie is. Here’s u young man.Mr.il.. who wants n berth on the road as braketnau. " .Tent was posted i mined i.e ly. "Well, I diin t know , w e'v. had u great many applications for the post; and, In fact, engaged ti limit to go out upon this train, but us he was not up to his engagement, I will talk to you. Have you been accustomed to rail reading ?” “W-a-a-1, no, ! hain’t, but i guess I could learn it mighty soon ; what’s the wagesf" “Thirty-six dollars a month and your clothes." "W'-u-a-l. mister, I’tn nnuly, ef you say wo, to take right hold." "Very well; then I'll send you out on this train ; hui J w ish to put you on your guard with reference to one matter, and that is there is u I rouble some set of fellows continually hang ing around the train, pretending to belongtothe road. Some of them may interfere with you if they do, put them off at once tell them I pm you on the train, and take no impu dence from any of them. As to your duties—when you hear one whistle, screw on\mir breaks ; if two ulunns are sounded. screw them down hard; and when three are given, loosen Hie breaks for the train to go on. You return here to-night and t hen I will see about your boarding place. Aocoidjugty down they went to the station, and there the pretended su perintendent shone I hi employee the brakes anil mode of using them, leaving hint with a fre.Ht injunction to “knockdown anvone w honttempt ed to iutei'iia with him." Before many minutes the Vermon ter had a customer Tin- whistle sounded and on went t lie l>rnke .. “What are you doing there with that brah ' shunted a legit inmt< Itrakeman. “jump off'there in a hut ry, if you don’t want your head broke,” Jonathan looked at lib Hide Intel rogator (a small man.iwitii coutenipt, but disdained to reply. “3-h-ree ! who-o n.0,” went the whistle, and the new brake man screwed away for life, until snap, went the chain. This was the cup too mneli, and off went tlie Imfuriated hruk< man for assistance. “What tie you doing t here?" a-ked the eonduelor. who returned with the man, ami stepping upon the plat form, placed 1 1 is; hands ort Jonathan, with a view of summary ejectment. A brief struggle ensued, at on elusion of which the conductor lay prostrate upon hi s bauk. with the small brftketimn’s hi a ijanic lb 'tween his legs. "Conte on, ye damned In athon’s 1” Shouted Jonathan, now fairly aeon, ed; “come on, I’ll lain ye to cut up your didos around me. The best purt of the joke was the denouement. The actual superin tendent bearing of tin' affair, and of the Indomitable pluck displayed by the Vermonter, sent for lum and did actually engage hint, and it is said that he now fills a satisfactory’ post upon one of the great Western rail ways. But such jokes being serious with six-footers. Jem has been compelled to forego similar limit! •* from that day to this. Is rr Wof.th WhiukV—And is it worth while to take all the sunshine out of life for the sake of a few mis erable dollars? Meat and groceries and coal and clothing are not all of life. It we restrict ourselves to these, and shut out music and pictures, and the Inspire l things that cultivate Hie (esthetic side of our nature, we shall be economical at the cost of dwarfing our moral and intellectual nature. And after we have done lids for a long series of years, and go reached middle age with a fair balance in the bank, we shall then find ourselves unfitted to enjoy the pleasures that money will buy. We shall have kept the dusty road so long that when we finally turn aside into the groves and the brook-side, our eyes will be in no condition to see the beauties around us. Is it not better to live while we do live, to give roeej brightness mid color to bur daily lives, even if by so doing we fail to Increase our hoarded Hdvhigs quite ns mptdiy as we other wise might? Is economy quite worth thesa rilii'e of everything that makes life other than a dull and dismal drudgery? A wise expenditure of money for the good things of life is really" the best economy. Avery clever way of getting rid of obstacles is that of the proposed mar riage of young King Alfonso, with the daughter of Lion Carlos. It is staid that in this event Don Carlos will withdraw his claims to the Spanish throne. HOLST MV I) & CO., STANTDAIID Bone Manures and Chemical. Supplies FOB FARMERS MAKING THEIR OWN FERTILIZERS.
