New York, January 17. A London
special of yesterday to the ItbWd
says: On inquiry 1 have learned from
Greenwich that the lirst ten tivo
computations of the data obtained
from observations of the recent
transit of Venus have yielded results
somewhat different from what was
ex]Hvted. Pour ealeulfttions made
independently give the suit's parallax
ils being respectively !K! seconds, ills
seconds, !IJS seconds, and 930 seconds,
the mean boiug 934 seeomls. Thu
eomputatious were made by Prof, W.
G. Adams, lecturer on physios In
Rings College; Prof. O. Henrtoi, of
University College; l’red K. Gutli
erie, of the Royal School of Mines
and Arts; and Messrs. Junkiit and
l'.llis, assistants at the Royal Observ
atory. Greenwich. No calculations
have yet. bean completed at Atkew
Observatory. The computations ns
given weiv made only upon a basis of
(he movements of external and in
ternal contacts as reported from the
different points of observation, and
may lie considerably modified when
the photographic and inieromoterio
measurements are taken into ac
count.
Tlio above dispatch was, according
to a lengthy supplemental statement,
submitted by I lie editor of the World,
yesterday, to a learned astronomer,
who objects to have his name in
j print, and who states that, according
to thes'> computations, the distance
of tiie sun from the earth is about
33,:!2:i semi-diameters of the sun, or
88,4 I 1,73 E, miles. This is nearly 7,1 WO,-
000 miles less than the distance made
by Kucke, from oliservutious of tlio
lasi transit, and ;l,non, non or 4,000,00n
miles less than tlio results obtained
by more recent measurements. Com
paring the calculations made in 1700
and those made in 1874. the distance
from the earth to the sun, in the
course of the one hundred and live
years that have elapsed, has been re
duced 0,930,374 miles. The astrono
mer cog eludes, therefore, that if ibis
ratio were eoiislaut it would require
just 1,440 yours to overcome the entire
distance, and the earth would then
be swallowed or consumed by the
sun. He considers the figures given
as hardly trustworthy, however, as
scarcely sufficient time elapsed to j
make the measurements and l aleula- j
tions accurately. The observations
to be made in 1883 will, it is expected, j
settle the question as to whether the [
possibility of the earth's fulling into!
the sun really exists.
