HPIItITI 11. tmiI'M'ITIOX. I.YINd FOB Font WEEKS IN THE MISSIS tUPPI KIVEB. r.ou|*i viii' eonum-rcinl.] Some weeks ago a young man, well known about town, whoso name we suppress for obvious reasons, spent the evening with several o( his oom- IKinions. and in the course of conver sation reference was made to the strange silence of a friend who had gone'fco St. Louis, and whose where abouts could not lie ascertained by lotteror Inquiry-, doing home that night, our hero s thoughts naturally turned to his absent friend, and while dwelling on the question. What lul l become of him T a hand tupi>ed his shoulder, and his absent friend s voice sounded in ills ear: "Why, George, old buy, bow are * '••Heavens! my old friend, whore did you come from V" was the reply, and noth shook hands heartily. "Well, 1 just dropped down, know ing you yvere thinking of me, und as I couidti' t stay long, thought I’d walk home with you.” "We were talking about you to night, and some of the boys thought von had been killed, as nothing could be learned of vou,” said George. "Well, George, the truth is X was drowned in the Mississippi four weeks ago, and my body yvas caught in an (Sidy on the Illinois shore, and its mighty uncomfortable, because 1 can’t get out and come to the surface, you see,” and the dead man smiled in his astonished friend’s face and took jits arm. George looked puzzled, and re marked even while he shivered, "Well, old boy, you an- a remarkably healthy-looking dead body, und l jiope you won't vanish before 1 can get you home and give you a toddy. The ghastly joke was kept up with disagreeable |ortinaeity, the friend insisting on the unpleasant situation his corporeal remains occupied, while George, with considerable effoi i. 1 vied to turn the subject until his residence was reached, and, dropping his friend's arm, he remarked. "Come u ami taka something to warm sou up. A chap that 's licon lying at the bot tom of the Mississippi four weeks ought to toe! dulled !" He looked around and his ineial had disappeared. Startled for the moment, he called and his voice sounded loud and distinct on [in still night air. There was no hiding place, tro nook where one could con ceal himself, and lie looked in vain. Ho ran Up and down the square; but no form, no footfall met his eye or sounded on his ear. lie entered the house, feeling very queer, but inclined to think his friend had played a joke upon him. He turned up the gas and mixed two toddies in the belief that his friend would re turn and accept Ills hospitality. After waiting half an hour lie was com pelled to take his -‘night-cap” alone, and, puzzled and half indignant, re tired without nrvnkiiig his wife. Next morning lie arose and dressed himself, and, to his dismay, found that his watch was missing. A close search proved unsuccessful. He re cited life evening's experience to liis wife and failed to convince her that lie had seen this friend, who bus never been heard of since. His friends look serious when lie cunll deutiully relates his story, but bis wife, woman like, absurdly remarks: "George, you ought to quit drink ing.” S-- i.iriMM.-. —Ex-SenaP r Nye is prostrate with ‘‘incurable softening of the brain,” which disease, it is thought, will in this case be of rapid operation. —•At Liverpool an Irish gor 1, aged thirty year.-, sued a soldier for brea-'li of promise, though tiler bad lievei seen one another, lmt bad exchang • I photographs and kept up some cor respondence. s —England notices an enormous in crease in the number of In-r rats, and attributes it chiefly to game-keepers, who, to their successful emteavor to preserve game, have nearly extermi nated wild-cats, weasels, owls, mag pies, hawks, and other natural ene mies of the rat. . ; —Still a remnant in tin- Paris Courts of scandals left over froth the Empire.
