A Brakrman'- ilravrry. The N. T. Sun says : Charles Cran dall, n brakeman on the Now York and New Haven railroad, saved the life of Man- B. .Tone-, In lYirtchester, recently, at the Imminent, risk of ids own.' Miss Jones, was crossing the track, when she roeoguizcd an uc quuiataueo in a little boy, and stop ped to talk with him. lie was not on the road bed, but Miss Jones stood on the track, which wits troinbjing with the approach of a Boston express at full speed. A freight train stood on the other through truck, and the men were busy switching cars on a side track, Crandall was on a freight ear that was moving, and hearing the exi>ress. shouted to Miss Jones to get out of the way. Site seemed not to hear, and continued her conversation. Crandall jumped from the moving car, and rau toward the woman, who, too late to save herself, saw her dan ger. “I thought, all of a sudden, that I’d try,” said he afterward, in relating the storvto his friends, ‘and I knew that it must be an awful quick try. She did not soe me coming, but she just glanced over her shoulder quick like, ami then shrunk altogether with a sort of shudder, and wnispered, T’m gone. 1 1 heard that whisper, and it seems as though tho engine might have heard it too. It was about as near her OS l was. It was which and tother between me and the express. The girl put her hands to her face ana tottered backward. I just caught her around the waist, and hugged her off the track as the whole train hur ried past. I looked on tho little wo man, anti She was as pale as a ghost., and hardly breathed. Thou 1 was afraid she would faint. But she open ed her dyes, and stared into my face in a wonderful way. just as one does on waking from a sleep after being sick and lightheaded. 1 think the scare, itself, came near killing her. She found out where she was quick enough, and bounded away. 'Don’t you ever come around this track again.’ said I. Then she laughed, nnd started for hones as she remark ed, 'I think I shall remember this time forever.' " . ♦ • A young gentleman who attends tho Austin public school had been told that a sudden shock or fright would euro the hiccough, and the other evening, while lie wus studying hts lesson for the morrow by draw itig a picture of cne school ma’am on his slate, his respected progenitor was seized with a lit of nicuoughs. The old gentleman was tilted back in his chair, with his feet resting on the top of the stove, and the young hopeful concluded to try the cure on him. Just as the old man was “rust ling” With a heart-breaking hie, the boy, jumped and yelled “Fire!" The ohl man was just getting out cull euh—, but lie never got it out. He gave a jump, which tilted over the chair, and. endeavoring to regain his lost equilibrium, his feet (lew up against the table, upsetting upon it, and his head laade.l in the ashes on the hearth. The old lady, hearing the racket, came running in from the kitchen and tripped over the old man’s prostrate form, knocking down a whatnot with a lot of glass and china ornaments. When that boy's father arose from the wreck and shook the ashes and splinters of glass out of his hair and clothes li wits cured ofthe hiccoughs, but there was ulook of sternness in his eve. He can’t play tag now, and the hoy sits on the edge of the scat at school, and lies on his front when in bed, and murmers that the old man can hic cough his eonsarned old head off be fore he will ever try to cure him. [4 Mtln (Net'.) licrirllc. When old Jesse Grant, the fat her of his BxeeUeney Ulysses, was postmas ter ut Covington, Ky„ a little boy en tered his ofii'-c to get a ten dollar bill changed. “Please, sir, eon yon change a ten dollar bill for me?” lie asked. “Yes, certainly, my little man,” said the father of Ins son, producing a roll of bills and proceeding to count out the change. When about to hand it over, he remarked to the boy, ”M> son. do you know that you are talk ing to the hither of the greatest man the world ever saw y” The little fel low started with amazement, exclaim ing, "What! are you the father of Stonewall Jackson ?” This was a set tler to the old man. and with a gruff “Get out!” he pocketed the hill and disapiiearcd within his sanctum, fol lowed by the shouts of the bystand ers. —lt is not always well to cause a woman to bo arrested in the street simply because you believe tier to Im* t he same woman who may have stolen what you missed from your shop so\ oral days before ; and the Paris shop keciier, who had caused the arrest of a lady in the street, reflected this probably as he quailed before her fierce indignation at the police suit ion and saw suits for damages looming in ms mind's eye, Horatio.
