The wild animals at the Hippo

tuestieated and trained, as they nec
essarily are, t hese creatures constant
ly betray their savage natures. The
pair of rhinoceroses quarrelled as
soon as they met at the Hippodrome, 1
and were with dillieulty -e pa rated, j
while tlie leopards a few days ago, in
dulged in a battle that ended in the
death of the weaker one. Yesterday
the gage of war was between the ele
phants, a race of animals usually j
quiet and peaceable uftcr doue-stiea
tion. One day this week the manage
ment received from Europe a imall
female elephau: named Julia, and
she was placed in a long box appro
printed to that class of pachyderma
tous. The old and new members of
the elephantine family appeared to
agree with each other very well until
yesterday afternoon. When the mat
ure performance was over Julia was
marched into the pen, being placed i
next to an elephant called Prince,
who at once began fondling his com
panion. Julia resented his attentions
and witli a blow of her proboscis ,
knocked him off his feet. Prince be-1
came enraged at this treatment,
and attacked Julia as soon os he re
covered from his astonishment. The j
struggle was u fierce one, and both of
the oMtoStants used their trunks and
tusks with rare good will, and the:
scene was so noisy that the audience
became some w hat frightened. All of
tbe jjephante trumpeted shrilly, and
their commotion led to much excite
nfent. among the occupants of the
several cages in the menagerie. Be
fore the watchful attendants could

Julia was badly gored by her an
tagonist, and after peace had been |
restored it was found necessary to 1
place her in a huge sling of canvas,
as she had sustained a severe wound
in the shoulder. The keepers do not i
consider the unfortunate beast in any
great danger, though the occurrence
is deeply deplored. The fact of such
a Ihi trie taking place is considered
remarkable, as old hunters say that
elephants have never been known to
quarrel in a menagerie before.

Chicago, Feb. 20.—Three years ago,
the mangled remains of a man wore
found in the south branch of the
Chicago river. No clue to the mur
der was ‘flficovered until last night,
when a young man named Daniel
Bassett, being arrested at the instance
of his father, Patrick Hassett, was
fined for Ids misdemeanor, and look
ed up over night. He sent for the
Sergeant of Police and made a state
ment, which he afterward swore to.
.that his father had chopped this man |
to pkwes. and. putting hi remains l
intoa barrel, had thrown them into
the river. Hassett was subsequently
arrested 1 u charge of murder, and
committed without bail till the :td of
March, He is said to have killed u
