A NOVEL SCENE IN WILSONS ANiriTHEA
TRE YESXKHUXV CHIARINI'B STUD

For u week or two past display ad
vortisemonts In the newspapers, and
posters upon the dead walls, have
fluinlngly informed the imhlie that
ut 12 o'clock noon, on Monday, Feb
ruary 15, the animals and properties
of Chiurinl’s Royal Italian Cir'us
would be sold at auction. The place
.selected was the street in front of
Wilson's Palace Ampltheatre, corner
tof Now Montgomery and Mission
’streets. Accordingly'a great crowd
.gathered yesterday. Ho numerous
Were the curious and covetous, in-
RJeed, that the street was quite im
passable for fully half an hour before
the time for commencing the sale.
As was to bo expected the assem
blage had a very horsey cast. There
were a great many gentlemen ia sul
kies, sporting diamond pins and pur
ple black tufts at their chins. Raw,
ml faces and variegated trousers,
belonging to gentlemen with hoarse
voices, were to be seen in profusion.
Rut the majorit y were mere
SLAVES OF CURIOSITY.
It isn't every day that one gets a;
cfitaoc to see a circus sold at auction.
By 'twelve o’clock the crowd had
grown so unmanageably large that
John C. Bell, the auctioneer, flatly
refused to mount the hogshead pre
paredfor him. With one arm around
the neck of the guanaeo, and a mon
key sitting on the other, Mr. Bell
#aid that with all due respect to Mr.
Mjhlarini, he’d see him hang'd before
be would bawl for several hours to
ueh un unruly and probably lianl
p multitude. ’ At this critical junc
ture John Wilson mounted the
■reach and ottered the use of hisam-
Jipitheatre. In a few moments that
Commodious building was crammed,
*ud the auctioneer upon a table al
fhe side of the ring was airing his
powerful voice on the astonishing
Kerits of the Batavia pony, “Tom
Thumb,” a black little beast the size
Of a stunted Newfoundland. In a
tone of almost tearful reproach, Mr.
til knocked him down to James
binsou, the circus rider, for SIOO.
•"Mandarin,” a Chinese piebald pony,
next seanqiered out and kicked up
the sawdust at a tremendous rate.
"How much am i offered for this
Cjtnmiing little fellow?” cried Mr.
E“Fifty dollars.”
PS’What! You don't know much about
ponies, sir, whoever you are. Why,
lock at him. He ain’t got a speck or
a blemish, and, on my word as a gen
tlemau, is the liuest animal on four

Thank you, sir. Come, raise it gen

private sale, gentlemen. Rid you Bay

you. Mars and lightning, this will

hardly needed the eloquence of the
auctioneer, and as the handsome
fellow went waltzing, pacing and
iron nig around the ring, under the
erroneous impression that a regular
performance was in progress, the
house broke into a hearty applause.

will not be pleased to learn that a
hideous little monster named Jinnio

looking wretch of the same genus
permitted himself to be sacrificed at

Mr Robinson paid SUo for one, but
then the beast, which is a compound
of camel and deer, can jump ten feet
high, and has large, tender, black
eyes.
A great quantity of harness, sad
dles. etc,, was sold at rather poor
■Hpes for such gorgeous trumpery.
The hidden: for this sort of property
were all circus or stable men. John
Wilson and Montgomery Queen
bought vast quantities of crimson
leafier, yellow silk, snapping whips,
and so forth. It was nearly o'clock
when what was left of the auctioneer
was lifted from the table. Although
Cbiniini took in between $20,000 ami
