The Atlanta Cunufitn/ion says a .lo
gei vej uompliweut l<> the wife of Gen.
Gordon was paM >‘t the Catholic
Church on Sunday. In his sermon to
married men, Rev. Father Smoulders
was impressing the duty of husbands
and wives remaining always together
never lieing apart for any length of
time. The wife s place at all times,
whether in business or pleasure, at
home or abroad, was bv tile side of
her husband. Saint Elizabeth, Queen
of Hungary, when her husband went
to tight in the Holy Land, nceomiNt
uied him through every peril. '■An
other instance of this kind," said the
reverend speaker, “oecurred in the
late war. 1 was on a mission in the
army, and the ease eatne under my j
own observation. In ttie cold and l
snow of a Virginia winter, surround-.
ed by the hurassments ami diseom
forts'of u state of war, a noble Oeor
gift lady remained at her husbamt'sl
side, cheering him with her counsels j
and supporting him in his adversi- 1
ties. That lady was the wife of Gen.
John 15. Gordon, a true ami noble
woman, who understands her wifely
duties aud deserves the esteem of
every one. Her example should be
imitated by every wife in the State,
aud husbands would be the better
for it."

The Xeir Beunswicker says : Sniffles
brought his two weeks’ spree to a
close on Thursday night. He lay on
a lounge in the parlor, feeling as
mean as sour lager, when something
in the corner of tin: room attracted I
his attention. Raising on his elbow >
lie gazed steadily at it. Rubbing his
eves he stared again, and as he stared
his terror grew. Calling his wife, he
asked hoarsely:
''Mirandy, what is that?”
"What is what, Likey?”
Sniffles’ name is Lyeiivgus and his
wile calls him Li key lor short ami
sweet.
“Why that that -thing in the cor
ner,” said the frightened man, point
ing at it with a hand shaking like a
politician.
‘Likey,dear, 1 sec nothing,' replied
the woman.
“What, vou don’t see it?” lie shriek
ed. Then I’ve got’em. Oh. heavens!
bring me the Bible. Miramly, bring it
ouiek! Here, here out his sacred book
I swear never to touch adropof whis
key. If I break my vow may my
right hand cleave to ihe roof of my
mouth, and
Here, catetung another glimpse of
the terrible object, ho clutched his
wife aud begged ill piteous tones :

Likeyand burying his face in the
folds' of tier dress, he sobbed and
moaned himself intoa troubled sleep.
Then his w ife stole gently to the
corner, picked up the toy snake, and
threw it in the stove.

The Wextern Rural gives us this
sample of a Dutchman’s advertise
ment: “A German in out town who
has not paid much attention to learn
ing English, had a horse stolen from
his barn the other night, whereupon
he advertised as follows :
“Von nite, de odor day. vert 1 was

Another exchange furnishes this
one: ''ADutchman, in describing a
pair of horses he had lost said? Dey

was written on white wooden tablets.
Prmtifex Maximus was the editor.
It first apix-ared only once a year, but !
the public became so eager for it that
the Goyennent found itself obliged
to issue the journal daily. Some of
