A youth who lives in this city has long wanted to serenade his lady love, but be ing possessed of no musical talent, an in superable difficulty seemed to prevent. The other night a bright idea struck him hard. He engaged a colored gentleman who plays the banjo with rare sweetness, and sallied forth to the residence of his love. He waited outside while his hired musician posted himself under tho win dow. After a short silence, tho melodious strains sounded through the air to the time ol that touching ballad, ‘‘ W hen you catch a white cat, shavo it." Tho youth said something bad; then ho east several missiles at tho happy musician, but all to no avail; the strains continued. At last the thing grew critical, and tho disap pointed lovor retreated hi good order, leaving his minstrel at work. The last he heard was tho sweet tone of tho banjo, and a tenor voice wailing out on the still mid night air, “Shave it on the tall!” For Gents’ Spring and Summer Suits, 1875, just received and on exhibition at Thomas i-PnaeM't Emporium ofFhMon. On yesterday several of the gypsle band now encamped nour our city camo lieforo Justleo T. J. Chappell for the settlement of a little family feud. Thoy came into tho city in gay style, drawn in a nice wagon by a pair of elegant horses. There were about half a dozen in the party. The ease soon developed itself as a prosecution of Margaret Mullen by her daughter, Mary Cooper, for nssnult and battery. Tho taking of evidence began and would prob ably have been going on now if thoro were not certain limits beyond whlcii human patience cannot bo pushed. Wo have all laughed ut the testimony of negro wit nesses, but It is no exaggeration to say that ttiey are models of fluency and log ical exactness when compared witli tiie wild gypsle. Such stammering and gib bering was probably never heard of in a court In this State before. It appeared that Mary had boon engaged in a little hair pulling witli another female, when the old lady endeavored to act as a con servator of tho peace and separate the in furiated ooinbuttants. The scone of tattle then changed, and age and youth met each other hi deadly combat. As is always tho case, experience triumphed over youthful Impetuosity, and the yonng wo man received a severe thrashing. At one time It Bocmod as if tho eombattants were about to ro-enact this little scene for the benefit of the court. At last, after hear ing volumes of evidence and learning nothing of tho merits of the case, his honor determined to dismiss both parties to tho enjoyment of their rustic pleasures. Thoy departed, and for the life of us wo could not tell whether they wore about hi embrace in paroxysmal affection or renew the ancient deadly feud, .fudge W. F. The bare announcement that this rare specimen of the genus homo Is to give one of his inimitable performances in this city next Wednesday night, ought to crowd the Opera House. Everywhere this great favorite has been groeted by enthusiastic audiences, and it is now conceded that in ids line, ho is without a peer. Nothing furnishes more real enjoyment than one of Cal’s inimitable entertainments. The wit is fresh end sparkling, and the music is tiie very beet that wo hoar. While we sit and listen, wo are reminded of the hal cyon days of yoro, when we wore all rich and hod genuine negro minstrels of our own. Wo had a pleasant call from Mr. Frank F. Coburn, Cal's general agent, on yesterday. He is preparing things for the coming of this king of fun. Hoad wliat the Nashville Republican and Banner says of this excellent troupe: Tho rain did not prevent the Ojw*ra House from being woll-lilhxl hist night, nearly every seat being occupied, many of them having been previously engaged. Cal Wagner and his company are indeed Nashville's favorite minstrels. It makes no difference what kind of weather exists, this troupe is always welcomed with a largo and paving audience. The perform ance last night was full of fun and wit, and the jokes and conundrums “got ofT’by the end moil, Price and Wagner, were the latest and elicited loud applause. Sam Price is Cal's right bower, and Wagner could not well do without him. Hawkins makes a good middle man, and the sing ing of Green and Murphy is well worth listening to. Tho burlesque on the Ten nessee Jubilee Singers, in which Wagner, Price, Turner, and Hawkins took part, was loudly encored. Toimny Turner’s banjo solo, Ohas. Bowd’s artistic clog, Ben. Brown's champion jig and Lem H. Wiley’s cornet solo, were all splendidly j rendered and meritouftly applauded. Editor Times ;—lt must bo painful to tho citizens to observe on tho part of a few, a disposition to impress the mind of tho pub lic that tho ministrations of our City Phy sician to tho poor have not boon of a satis factory character. An investigation of his official conduct will satisfy any ruun that such is not tho fact, but that, on tho con trary, his services aro highly appreciated by tho poor. His never falling and kind attentions to the sick havo won for him tho high respect of tho whole community, and he is Justly indorsed by tho Mayor and City Council. If his censorious object ors will trouble them wives to Inquire of the poor, or the city authorities, they will find that as small as their number is, thoy maintain tho sole possession of an opinion which has no foundation in fact, and orig inates solely In personal spite. Dr. Flow ellcn is known to our people, and in their eyes his character can be injure! bv no such petty thrusts. His charities have al ways been commensurate with his ability to give, and in public spirit he has no su perior in the community. His untarnish ed character as a gentleman, and his skill ful ability as a physician, are too well known through*ut our city and State to require any defence at oiir hands. Whence does this complaint come? Not from the Mayor and Council, for they say he transacts the duties of his position with kindness and ability. Not from the poor, for they say he is kind and attentive. It has been his liarneat desire, and the ob ject of his untiring efforts, to relieve suf fering and minister to the afflicted. If tiiis complaint comes from neither t in* people, tho Mayor, the Council, or the poor, from whence does It proceed? It makes no dif ference. People can talk and rant as much as they please; they may assert opinions of things about which thoy know nothing and eare equally as little; but the effect ‘of all this is like “sounding brass or a tin kling cymbal." In our opinion the Doctor deserves the esteem of the publb-, and the love of the* poor, for his uniform kindness and regularity in the discharge of ids du ties, and especially for his recent manly efforts to establish a system of relief for the poor and needy. In this matter, he displayed a spirit of philanthropy and gen erosity which is well worthy the imitation of those who now endeavor to detract, from his well earned reputation. But there aro some people who object to everything, j whether they know anything al>out it or not. When such people commit Un-ir opinions to paper there Is a shear waste of so much raw material. Dr. Flewellen has fallen under tho displeasure of a very few, and they belong to this class. Is he any the worse off? A Subscriber. € 'it 11 at thu Baltimore lot It lit u llii*e. We hear from Montgomery that a col- j tired gentleman in that city unexpectedly ; left a vacancy in a jury box to accept a position on the city chain gang, kindly tendered him ?n consequence of a misun derstanding about the ownership of some ! hogs. It is reported from a good source that j an intelligent coroner's jury in Columbia, ' South Carolina, composed of colored i gentlemen, recently gave utterance to tho following; "We find dat dis here man came j to his def from having forty-seven ribs broken and his head smashed.” His whole frame trembled w ith emotion.! He leaped off Ills horse while yet he al- i most flew, and dashing into the postofih e ho hurled the astonished by-standers in confusion around him, and bringing his fist down on the general delivery yelled out, “I say, Is thar anything here for Charles Augusta Dooly?” The great McDuffie once prophesied that if “it should ever occur that a President of the United States should l>e assassinated, he will be the last constitutional President, and his blood will cement the despotic throne of his successor.” With the death of Lincoln, and the rule of Grant before us, wo are tempted to believe that this won derful prediction was the result of inspira tion.
