Some time since, wo spoke of the effort
which the negroes of the Methodist church
were making to build anew house of wor
hip in this city. They had begun can
! vnsßing among our citizens for the pur
pose of getting their aid. This movement
was headed by the pastor, Rev. W. J.
Gaines. At the time wo gave notice of this
effort to Induce the assistance of our citi
zens wc were favorable to its success. We
thought that the pastor was friendly and
well disposed toward the people whose as
sistance lie was so anxious to receive. Re
cent developments have shown that this
sanctimonious humbug can wear two ex
pressions, and while he puts up an humble
prayer for pecuniary assistance, can have
the uudacity to publish the most unfound
ed slanders upon the people who have,
perhaps, boon too kind to such as he. In
the editorial columns of this issue will be
found a full expose of this artful hypocrite,
and it is needless to say that ho can expect
little encouragement from this community.
Wo are surprised that he should even
ask assistance of a people whom his dirty
letter makes ho vile. Ee aliove such things,
Mr. Gaines, and don’t rear a temple to the
Lord with money which you are compelled
to ask of such mean white trash. The
treasure to be used by such a holy, an
notated priest as yourself should come
from a purer source. The notice wo have
given this petty slanderer may Hwm more j
than he deserves, but it should lx* rernom- j
bored that the letter he wrote was pub- j
fished in the North, and that the people j
who hate us aro too ready to believe all j
manner of evil concerning the condition of I
affairs here, even though it come from as
unreliable a source as the negro Gaines.
This creature is no longer deserving of the
kindness lie has received from our people.
If he were worthy of it the unmitigated
contempt and scorn of the community
ought to fall upon him. He is a negro of
more than ordinary talents and education,
and these gifts which he should use to
benefit his race have been made the instru
ments of calumniating his superiors. He
cannot be worthy the confidence of his
congregation, for lie who can utter such
malicious falsehoods must have a bat!
heart, and in the pulpit must be the means
of untold mischief. Wc are sorry that this
negro, who should have known better,, has
degraded himself below the level of re
spectability for his race, is no longer en
titled to the respect of those who were
once so badly mistaken .as to consider him
worthy of it.

One of tho very largest audiences of the

night. The galleries were packed, a large
number of "colored troops” being out.
The performance for the evening was
really good. The singing, especially that
of “Mocking Bird Green,” was lino, “Cal’s
dinners" made magnificent music of old
fashioned negro melodies. The dancing
of Brown was extraordinary. Oil himself
displayed his finest powers and was as
natural and irresistible as ever. His
"Down Whar do Sugar Cano Grows” was
a masterpiece and possessed considerable
pathos. One or two scenes were rough
and overdone. The programme would
have been greatly improved by their
omission. Taken as an entertainment,

INFANTICIDE.
Child fttriinvlcd and Thrown Inton Ditch.
Yesterday morning, about six o’clock,
the body of an Infant child was found in a
ditch on Mclntosh street. The body was
wrapped in a pillow-case and had such
i signs of violence upon It that it was imme
diately supposed that it had boon the vic
tim of a horrible infanticide. The child
was a male mulatto, almost white, and
was finely developed in every particular.
It was taken in charge by Coraner 8. 0.
Lloyd, and carried to the Court-house,
where a jury was summoned, and an in
quest held over the body. The following
evidence was brought, which throws some
light on the subject:
William Burrus, sworn—Lives on the
corner of Mclntosh and Crawford streets.
Early in the morning, a negro girl in his
employ came in the house and told him
that there was a baby in the ditch, in
front of his house. He went out and found
the corpse of a child; it was enclosinl in a
pillow-case, and seemed to have murks Oi
violence on it. , .
i Ed. Browning, sworn As he was going
i home, about half past five o’clock, saw
what appeared to be a garment In the
ditch, near the intersection of Crawford
and Mclntosh streets; took hold of it and
discovered that there was something In it;
the contents felt like flesh; did not make
any further examination of it, but left it
where it was found _ •
Opinion of Dr. J. M. Ford— * * From
the marks of violence about the child s
throat he believed it had l>oen foully dealt
with. The child might have been born
two or three days ago, or it might have
been born during the previous night.
After hearing this evidence, the jury re
turned the following verdict;
We, the jury, do, upon our oaths, affirm
it as our opinion, that said deceased mu
latto child came to his death from being
strangled by a person, or persons, un
known to us.
J. W. Howard, Foreman.
S. O. Lloyd, Coroner.
From the evidence aml the verdict of
the jury, it seems very evident that the
child was murdered and thrown in the
ditch. There seemed to be no circum
stances which implicated any parties.
Such a foul deed is exceedingly difficult of
concealment, and it is more than probable
that the wretch who murdered this infant
will yet be brought to justice. There arc
few fouler crimes than infanticide, and the
law has sot the seal of its vengeance upon
him or her whose hands are stained with
the Innocent blood of new-born children.
Such deeds are shocking to the commu
nity in which they occur, and their effects
upon the moral welftire of the public are
the very worst.
