Pursuant to announcement, a large num ber of tho most influential citizens of Co lumbus met In front of Ellis & Harrison's auction room yesterday at 12 m. The meeting was hold for the purpose of con sidering tho sufferings of those in the neighboring counties who have Just been] visited by so terrible a calamity, and to adopt some measures for their relief. On motion, Mayor Mcllhenny took the chair and briefly stated tho object of tho meeting. He said we should be thankful for our very narrow escape, and give more liberally on that account. Mr. ('. H. Wil liams was requested to act as Secretary, and tho meeting was then declared ready for business. Upon motion of Major A. M. Allen, Cap tain N. J. Otis, of Taibotton, took the stand and stated the fearful ravages of the storm in his county. He gave the same details that we have In our account, and stated that no words could picture the des titution and misery of tho people. They are deprived of everything; some of them arc almost naked and without any food or shelter. Mr. Boully, editor of the Hamilton Visi tor, gave an account of the suffering in his county. 110 sail the scene was beyond the power of description. There was much suffering, and the people were in great need of necessaries. Mr. Lorenzo Biggers narrowly escaped j the tornado in Talbot county. He gave an j account of Its ravages and the sufferings of its victims. Mr. Willis, of Taibotton, was appointed by a meeting of the citizens of that place to come to Columbus and solicit aid. He reiterated tho dreadful particulars of tho storm and gave a mournful account of the condition of the people. Mr. C. A. Redd moved that the meeting request the City Council to donate one thousand dollars and the County Com missioners two thousand dollars to the sufferers in Talbot and Harris counties. Major Allen favored increasing the amount | to three thousand from the county and , two thousand from the city. Mr. H. S. Estes agreed with this proposition. Mr. C. A. Redd amended his motion so as to ask one thousand of the city, and threo thousand of tho county. Unani mously carried. Mr. D. V. Ellis moved that a committee be appointed to solicit aid of any kind from tho citizens. Money, clothes, food, hammers, saws, anything would be accept able. Motion carried, and the following named gentlemen appointed <>n the com mittee: Win. Watt, A. M. Brannon, W. H. Needham, C. C. McGohee, Lawrence Bur | rus, J. H. Hamilton, S. G. Murphy, C. A. Redd, C. E. Dexter, D. R. Size, W. 8. Para* j more and J. Marlon Estes. | Mr. Wm. Barden moved that the books i for subscriptions be opened at once. Car- I ried. Mr. C. A. Redd moved that in tho event the Council and Commissioners granted the request of the meeting, that the Mayor appoint a committee, himself to act as chairman, of three from the County Com missioners and three citizens, said com mittee to see to a proper disbursement of the appropriated funds. Carried. On motion, the meeting adjourned. MEETING OP TIIF. RELIEF COMMITTEE. I At a meeting of the Committee appoint ed to solicit subscriptions, held last night, Mr. J 1.8. Estes was called to the Chair, i and C. C. McGohee appointed Secretary, j Tho various sub-committees reported ! that they had secured the suljscription of about $1,403 (chiefly in money) for the re i lief of the sufferers, making, with the ap propriation of SI,OOO by the city, $2,403. It being understood that the City Coun cil had appointed as a committee to take charge of its appropriation, Aid. Brannon, Andrews and Ledsinger, and Messrs. H. 8. Estes, J. H. Hamilton and C. A. Redd, it was resolved that said committee bo con firmed by this meeting to take charge of all appropriations made and to be made by the citizens. It was resolved that E. P. Willis, 8. M. Brannon and Capt. Neal, from Mt. Airy neighborhood; T. A. Brown, W. J. Raines and Augustus O’Neal, from the Taibotton neighborhood; J. M. Mobley, Joel T. Johnson and Wm. I. Hudson, from the Hamilton neighborhood, bo requested to act as committees to ascertain the amount of damage and suffering in their respective districts, and report to the Fund Committee. Said committees will also be requested to take charge of and distribute any funds or provisions which may be sent them. Committees wore also ap pointed to visit tho devastated sections, and report to an adjourned meeting on Thursday night. Further and fuller reports from Messrs. A. M. Brannon and W. J. Watt, who re turned last night from the scene of the tornado, only add to tho amount of suffer ing and distress already announced. Doiuiflou to the Nufl'erfr*. Yesterday afternoon there was a called meeting of tho Council, to consider the pe tition of tho citizens’ mooting for a dona tion to the sufferers from the late storms: Present Mayor Mcllhenny, and Alder men Grimes, Brown, Joseph, Ivodsinger, Curtis, Cos tan, and Andrews. By Alderman Ledsinger—Be it enacted, That tho City Council of Columbus donate one thousand dollars to the sufferers of Harris and Talbot counties; said donation to be disbursed by a committee appoints! by tho Mayor. Unanimously carried. The Council then adjourned. The County Commissioners met yester day and considered the request which had boon made of them for three thousand dol lars. They dnterminod, utter a mature consideration of tho subject, that they had no power to grant the request. Tho coun ty funds are placed in their hands for cer tain punposes, and they am not use them f,r any other. They aro trustoos and their authority is clearly marked out by law, so that they cannot transcend it. They did not think it extended unto on ap propriation of the tunds for any purpose but those specified. They all expressed themselves as feeling a hearty sympathy for tho sufferings of their neighbors, and are willing to help them in any possible way. They are as anx lous as possible to relievo the suffering, and will do all in their power to help the destitute in Talbot and Harris counties. Thero can be no doubt that their action in this case was eminently proper. It is commended by the citizens. The sum which was asked of the Commissioners can easily bo raised by private subscriptions, and we hope it will be done. Wait and see Hill’s great trapez act at Opera House Thursday, March 25th.
