Help fbr the Hfrrm.
Our poopte havo eatfgpnded nobly to tho ;
appeals for help which have been rondo to
them In behalf of the suff*rcrH from the j
late tornado. About sixteen hundred dol
lars havo been raised by private subacrip
| Worn and donations of various kinds. Tho
Eagle and Phenix Factory gave two hun
dred dollars. In one room the operatives
Contributed t wenty-nix dollars. Home of
them are only getting fifty cents a duy,
and they contributed one days’ wage*.
This in a noble Instance of self-sacritlcing
liberality. If all gave at* much, In propor
tion to their means, as these poor oi>era
tivee, thousands upon thounandsof dollars
would easily be raised. The citizens eon
tributod to the help of the sufferers In va
rious ways; wane sent clothing to those
who had lost everjdldng; some sent nails
and hammers to rebuild the dwellings de
molished by the storm. Anything will be
acceptable to those unfortunate beings
who are left homeless and destitute of tho
necessaries of existence. Tho committee
is still at work soliciting subscriptions.
The amount given by private parties, to
gether with the donation of the City Coun
cil, make twenty-six hundred dollars con
tributed by the city of Columbus. The
people In t he immediate vicinity of the tor
nadoes are coming up nobly to the assist
ance of their unfortunate neighbors. They
are giving them shelter and provisions,
and forgetting their own occupations to
help in building houses and erecting en-
closures. The people are still hopeful, and
even those who suffered most, amid ail
their calamities, preserve a manly deter
mination to do the best they can, and try to
recover from the blasting effects of a most
terribly misfortune. There is some hope
that something of a crop may yet l>o made,
even in those sections which suffer**! most
heavily.
We are glad to state that the llrst reports
from the Talbot tornado were oxagger
ated as regards the numlter of deaths.
It is now certain that only seventeen per
sons were killed; some may die of their
injuries. The number of wounded will not
exceed thirty.
Tho particulars of the storm in Harris
county come in very slowly. The entire
absence of telegraphic communication
with any part of tho county renders the
transmission of news exceedingly slow,
From residents we learn that the people
arc banding together to Uolp each other,
and all arc zealously at work iu tho effort
Ho recover from their dreadful loss, tho
amount of which cannot now be approxi
mated with any accuracy. It is certainly |
enormous. The storm has destroyed the i
labor of years, and made some men, who j
were happy and prosiwrous, almost pen
niless; and, what is infinitely worse, has j
deprived them of those who were dearer j
than life itself.
Messrs. A. M. Brannon, W. J. Watt, and
some other citizens, left yesterday for the
scone of destruction in Talbot county.
They carried with them food and clothing
for the sufferers and medicines for tho
wounded. They also took several negroes
to assist in tho construction ot fences and
houses. Wo hope that our neighbors will \
recover from the effects of this awful j
calamity very soon, and that years of;
happiness and prosperity may succeed to j
a season of so much ruin, desolation and
sorrow.

A large number of members and friends
were present last night at tin' meeting of
the Young Men’s Christian Association at
the Presbyterian Church.
Mr. J. A. Frazer was called to the choir
and opened the meeting. Mr. It. (I. Glenn
was requested to act as secretary.
Rev. J.O. Branch made a few pointed re
marks, after which the constitution which
had been drawn up by a committee ap
pointed at a provious meeting was taken
up and acted on by sections. It was
adopted as reported, with one or two
amendments.
The constitution provides for the elec
tion of ton Directors of the Association,
live of whom are to bo elected each year.
The following gentlemen wore chosen as
Directors for two years: Messrs. A. If.
Green, It. H. Goetchlus, G. K. Glenn, Cbaa
Coleman and G. M. Venable. The follow
ing were elected for one year: A. It. Wll
kerson, I. L. Pollard, 8. B. Hatcher, Mark
Bradford and J. E. Fitzgerald.
The Association then adjourned to nun*!
at the same place next Tuesday night.
After the mooting adjourned the Board
of Directors, held a mooting for election of
officers, which resulted as follows: Presi
dent A. It. Wiikerson; Vico President
Mark Bradford; Corresponding Secretary
—Geo. M. Venable; Recording Secretar—
y B. Hatcher; Treasurer Charles Cole
man.
The Directors ‘then called a meeting of
tho Association to be held at the Baptist
Church next Sunday afternoon at 5 oVlk.
The meeting last night was marked by
an interest which clearly shows that the
Association will prosper. May it thrive,
flourish, and be fruitful of much good!

nlghtTanitof all the merry, gaV, frffieklng

the most remarkably. For sevral days
previous the dusky damsel had her kinky
locks enveloped*ln tho tortuous folds of
paper, that they might havo on this great
occasion a friz which would be perfectly
glorious. The colored Adonis had liought
a flaming rod cravat, a lofty standing col
lar, and an immaculate paper shirt front,
just to w’*ar on this eventful night.
The expectations of the most rfrtngulne (
were surpassed by tin? dazzling reality of
the brilliant affair. Two bran new kero
sene lamps furnished a soft and mellow
radiance, a banjo, a fiddle, and a musical
triangle woke the tender strains of harmo
ny, well calculat'd to Ull the soul with
poetic emotions. A feast like unto the
sumptuous banquets of the luxuriant Ho
mans was spread out to delight the eye
and satisfy the apatites of 110 festive
throng.
Amid all these attract ion* pleasure sat

cord threw the golden apple of contention

The County Commissioners aro deter
mined to have a nice Superior Court room.
They havo given the contract for the re
pairs to Messrs. Cham pay no & England,
and these gentlemen began the work yes
terday. The old rostrum and jury stand
were takes down, the chairs removed and
everything fnade ready for the work to
begin. The appearance of tho room will
be greatly Improved. The judge’s stand is
to be placed in tho north end; instead of
occupying its old place,'on the east side of
the room. To tho left of this, a raised
semi-circular platform will bo arrange* I
for the jury; between the platform and
the stand a neat witness box is to be
placed. The vault to the right of the
stand is to bo nicely arranged and will
contain the county records, court papers,
etc. This will be a great convenience to
the clerk and to the members of the bar.
Between the stand and tho vault a nice
office for the Clerk is to be arranged. The
bar is to extend to the south door. From
this door to the cud of the room rows of
graduated benches will be placed for the
accommodation of spectators. This new
arrangement will ixjssess many advanta
ges over tho pcesont one, and add greatly
both to the apparanco and convenience of
the room. If the walls could be nicely
l frescoed wo would have the handsomest
court room in the State. Tim work will
be pushed through zealously, and in little
more than a weak all will be complete.
