BLOODY WORK J
A linn Futility Uwt Nlichl.
Last night about ton o’clock a bloody
affair occurred in the bar-room of Toby
Newman, on Broad street. A man named
Wilburn Williams, better known In this
community as Tigo Williams, was fatally
shot by a one-armed man named Wllcher,
who keepa a wood-yard at Smith’s Station,
on tho Western Road. Tho two men were
playing cards, when a third party said
something about the game, which evoked
a reply from Williams, who then quit
playing and rose from tlio table and con*
tlnued to talk to tho third party. The
conversation became pretty warm on both
skies. Williams was accused of an en
deavor to cheat. He repelled this accusa
tion rather angrily. After a while Wllcher
ro*o from tlio table, drew a pistol and
snapped it in William’s face. Williams
made an effort to get out of the way,
when Wllcher snapped at him again.
Williams then retreat**! into a recess
where refreshments are served, and seized
a plate or salt stand, which 1,0 threw at
Wllcher. A friend of Williams called to
him to run out of tho frontdoor. This he
tried to do, and while running, turned Ids
hood to watch Wllcher. As he did this
Wllcher fired, the ball entering Williams’
head, Just above the light eye. H** fell
on tho floor. Wokher ran after ho shot
and soon disappeared. A crowd collected
on the spot immediately. Dr. Johnston was
present uml probed the wound an inch and
a half. HC4>ronounces it very dangerous.
I The wounded man was conscious and
| spoke of the affair. Said he had no diffl
j cully witii Wliehor and did not know him.
It was tho general opinion that the wound-
I o<l man could not survive.

They had the Can-Can in Atlanta Thurs
day night, the same time it was witnessed
in tills city. They had it by tho Cerito
troupe, a gang about on a level with that,
which appeared in our opera house, with
this exception: the women with it are not
quite as ugly. The dance was the same,
I and followed after tho same kind of a vari
ety show as we had. Atlanta is called a
I fast place. It is more sensational and
more progressive than any city in Geor
gia. But despite all this, tho Can-Can was
far too much for them. Our strictures
on its lewdness and vulgarity arc very
mild, compared to what tho papers of that
city say.
The Omslitutum says:
For suggestive and brave exposure of
the person, volumptuous vulgarity of
• movement and broad indecencies of man
ner and language, the like was never
known at DeGrlve’s and we unhesitatingly
! affirm that a second performance attempt*
j ed in Atlanta would nave led to the arrest
of the whole party. The utter shame
lessly of the acting last night, and its
corrupting character can hardly !** ex
pressed, and we trust that the troupe
will be dispersed by the law, if they do not
discard their Indecencies.
The Herald calls it the “acme of shame
and quintessence of vulgarity,” and says
editorially:
“The pernicious influence of such shows
is simply ineaUmble. They are in contra
vention of all recognized publicpolicy. The
harm they do is immeasurable. To per
mit such exhibitions openly and in our
liost places of amusement Is to poison so
ciety. The law forbids, religion condemns,
and morality oppose them.
“Tho self-respect of Southern manhood
demands that their pollution should be
driven from their ruinous mission among
us.
“The Herald declares a no quarter war
hh those villainous Can-Can shows. It
brands them as blots upon religious civili
zation. If such filthy exhibitions can be
openly permitted, we may till well for
swear our religion and turn our cities into
a vast bawdy house.’’

The reports which now come to us from ;
tlio desolated portions of Harris and Tal
bot counties, are more cheering than they (
w**ro at Ilrst. Tho people seom to bo ral
lying from the terrible blow which lias
fallen upon them. They are making pre
parations for tills year's crop, and arc
trying to clear away tho ruins left by the
tornado. They have before them a terri
ble task- one which will require a deal of
manly determination and untiring energy.
It Is ominous of good to see our farmers
going to work with such courage and zeal.
Wo wish them all success in their opera- 1
tions, and though they can never forget j
the awful trials through which they have j
just passed, yet a year of prosperity, of |
abundant harvests and plentiful yields, j
will do much to relieve them of their j

It is my sad duty to tell you of the death
' of ray little patient, Mamie Pitts, who was
l so terribly torn up by Saturday’s storm,
j She died tills morning at o'clock from
rupture of a pulmonary artery. She was
lying calm and quiet, talking to Miss Jim
mie Mobley, and had just said, “I will
soon be well,” when the rupture took place,
j She lived only about eighteen minutes,
j She was doing so well, we were all jubi
lant over the prospect of her early recov
' ery. We were not looking for anything <>f
tiffs kind; only fearer! trassmattc fever in 1
the future.
The balance of tlio wounded are all do-!
ing well. Mrs. Pitts, James Henry, and
