In our edition of yesterday we gave the
public the statement of Sir. Lapham re
garding his difficulty with Mr. MeEaeh
ren. Asa matter of justice, we give the
other side. It Is brief, and consists in a
denial of the charges made by Mr. Lap
ham as to any kicks or threats. Mr. McE.
and Mr. L. met and hail a few words about
a Ist. The words amounted to nothing,
and friends stopped the quarrel. The
quarrel consisted In a few words about
who should put up the money first. This
is, in substance, Mr. McEachren’s atato-
I ment; and, under his present surround
| ings, it is due him Hint the public should
j not misunderstand his conduct.

A C’l Thief.
The coolest instance of horse stealing
that ever occurred in these parts came to
our notice yesterday.
On Sunday last, Mr. J. D. Ely, of Harris
county, visited Mr. J. M. Bussell, who
lives just outside the city limits. Mr. Ely
intended to stay only a few minutes, and
us lie dismounted, hitched his horse to the
fence and went in the house. Soon after
ho entered, several negroes on the place
saw a slender man, with grey board, walk
leisurely up the road, and quietly unhitch
tho horse. Not having seen Mr. Ely enter,
> they thought the fellow was the owner of
1 the horse. He led the animal slowly down
■ the road, just a* if he were controlling his
■ own individual and indisputable property.
He soon reached a ditch, when he mount
-1 od the horse and rode slowly up a hill ly
■ ing just beyond. He had not gotten out
of sight before Mr. Ely discovered that his
horse was gone. Pursuit of the bold thief
\ was made instantly, but as horses could
i not le obtained for some time, he escaped.
. He was easily traced through a piece of
woods, but after the tracks turmnl into a
road further pursuit of his trail was im
possible. This Is certainly one of the cool
est pieces of unblushing villainy we have
over heard of. The whole thing occurred
about midday, and In a very few yards of
Mr. Russell’s dwelling. The negroes on
the place saw the man very distinctly, and
* gave a full description of his appearance.
From tills, some think the thief was a
noted horse stealer, named Donaldson,
whose fame Is spread around generally in
. these regions.
Many years ago, a horse was stolen
. from a rack in the very centre of this city,
1 and in broad daylight. The thief was
r never captured. This instance furnishes
[ the only parallel, we know of, to the bold
. villainy of Sunday. When men become so
. daring and accomplished in the art of
theft, they have reduced it to a science,
ami ought to lie distinguished from the ig
, norant bungler, whose slightest roguery
is so easily detected, and who always
conn's to grief.
