Policeman Connor Hui*Hdcd. Yesterday morning Mr. Connor, a su(er numerary on the Police force* wiw ar raigned liy the city authoritl<*B on charge of disorderly conduct on the day of the SlierifTtt election. Alderman R. W. Led singer presided In the case, Messrs. John Brown, Ed Howell and H. F. Everett were the witneeM*. The evidence against Con nor wow that ho had kicked and struck a negro who was endeavoring to repeat at the election. After hearing all tboovidencoln the case the decision of the Court was that Connor was (Mirfectly justifiable in preventing the negro from voting twice. This is a right which every citizen has. Mr. Connor had no right to strike the negro while prevent ing his second vote. He acted too hastily, and transcended the bounds of his author ity. He was, therefore* Indefinitely sus pended from the force. In tills matter of Mr. Connor we think Mr. Lodsingcr acted in accordance witli the judgment and wishes of the people, and that he deserves public gratitude for his prompt determination. Mayor Mcll henny lias expressed a willingness to in vestigate whatever cliarges may be brought against other members of the police. We suppose several other members of the force will bo arraigned and their conduct thoroughly investigate!. This is decidedly proper and just, and we hope to see the whole truth brought to light. Jus tice should be done. If it is proven that any member of the police force transcended ids duties as laid down in the law, no mat ter who he is, lie ought certainly to is; dis charged from the force. If the charges made against these men are not sustained by undoubted evidence* they ought to bo kept In office, and deserve the respect of the people. Tliis is a fair proposition, and all who are conscious that they did not usurp un due authority will rdily accede to it. It is the general opinion that the author ity should act in all the other cases like they did yeaterday. They have received information that these men have acted in an unauthorized and unjustifiable man ner, ami they should thoroughly investi gate those charges, without waiting for action to bo brought by any private par ties. If the officers accused of this illegal interference are guilty, it is due the people that the matter should be investigate!. If these officers are innocent, it is due te them that the matter should be investi gated and the charge refute!. No matter how the case stands, to satisfy the people, a thorough searching investigation is em inently proper and should certainly Iky had. Elegant black Grenadines from 40c. to 1.00 at Jno. It seems a difficult task to gel up any orthographic excitement in Columbus. Whether this want of interest results from conscious proficiency or from a lack of en ergy, we are unable to state. Everywhere else the thing has been tried, and has suc ceeded. In many localities they have re peated the fun, and the most enthusiastic admirers of bees arc even preparing for u third or fourth effort in tliis lino. Wo understand that one is about to be arranged here. The matter is, at present, in such a tender incipioney that wo will not say much about it, for fo ir too much noise might frighten it completely away. It Is rumored that the Memorial Associa tion will take the matter in hand, and If this is true, we are certain of its success. We also hear that Profs, Slade, Dews, and Glenn haw consented to act as managers of the occasion. Quite a number of gen tlemen have expressed a perfect willing ness to (Mirtidpatc, and if a beginning ' ah only be made there need be no tear of read y and ample support. We really believe Umt the opera house could be Riled, and we cannot give any idea of how much fun w<- would nil have. There is no reason why we cannot have u really extraordinary l>**<*. We have enough talent, enough time, and enough of every other essential quality, except a little energy to start the move ment. tr somebody will just take suffi cient interest in the proposition to make an initial effort, wo will surely have a Ihd. Wo hop© the rumors to the effect that ar rangements are now being made for a rare entertainment of this kind will prove true, and that the efforts of the prime movers in the project will bo generally and heart ily seconded. If we do have a boe, we, in common with a large number of our citizens, shall insist that Mr. Jake Burr us be made Chief Mar shal of t he occasion. ■Klmpxoii Cotton Heed, Raised by Edward T. It stands disgraced among its follows by gloomy traditions ami long-seated preju dices. It has been allotted by universal ami immemorial custom to the spe cial service of legal life-taking. Despite all this, wo like Friday. Maybe wo like it because the last one we had brought us thirty-five new subscribers. This was so cheering that we did not mind the bad name of the day at all* nor did the gloom which it is supposed to cast over mortals affect us in the slightest degree. CtApilnry of the Pollec. We understand that an appointment will soon bo mode to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of W. L. Cash, formerly one of the captains of the polioo force of this city. It is ail important that a g<od selection be inode for this office. It should be filled by a cool-headed, determined man, one who will treat friend and foe alike, and who will soo that the laws of the city are strictly enforced. The position is by far more Important than the people are apt to suppose, and should always be filled by the very best citizens. Its duties and rc*q>onsibilltfcu are varied and arduous, and it gives a tremendous scope for the exertion of influence for good or for evil. By no moans should this important office ever be held by a man who uses in the slightest degree the j>ower thus afforded him for the advancement of personal good or ttie redress of private Wrongs. Put a man of a naturally over-bearing and tyrannical disposition into a position which clothes him with authority, and he will be too apt to use it to aid and übet all to whom his personal prejudices incline him and to injure those who are theobjeets of ids personal dislikes. Above everything else the man who holds this position of trust and honor ought to know just when and where to use his authority. He should not upon the slightest indication of contempt or defiance act as if his life were in eminent peril, and shooot the offender upon the spot. While he should lie a man of un flinching bravery, he should abstain from the use of violence upon offenders just as long as he possibly can with safety to himself. Fighting men, bullies, ami des peradoes have uo more business upon the police force than they have in the mayor alty. The office of policeman is one which entitle*} him to public respect ami confi dence, and it should not Ij© filled by a man whose private character forbids any such feeling. In this, as in nil other official stations, the man should honor the office and not be dependent upon it for all claims to re-' speefc. The vacancy in the captain’s office j ought to bo filled by the very best man that can be gotten, no matter who he is. j A large majority of the citizens of Colum bus are utterly opposed to the regulation of these matters by a spirit of favoritism or ftartizansidp. Personal preferences ought to be entertained by no man when the good of the people and the peace, as well as the fame* of the city are all at stake. Surely, in Columbus there can be found quiet, peaceable, citizens who are well known and highly respected and who will willingly accept the vacancy, the proper filling of which is of no small im- I>ortance. It is infinitely better to place in power men who are conceded to be worthy of the preferment and who have the good wish** of the whole city than those who are only supported and upheld by petty cliques and rings. Put in the former and you make honest, efficient, and popular officers; put in the latter and you place authority in the hands of a man whose only care will bo to use it for the advan tage of those who conferred it. The law abiding, peace-loving people of tliis city are anxious that those offices shall be well filled* and tliat the very best men lx* placed in control of the local government. The effects of any other course cannot but be detrimental in various ways, and if the plan of partizanship bo generally adopted its results will lie similar to its disastrous workings wherever it lias boon tried. We are confident that wo express public sen timent when wo say that the whole city will expect the present vacancy to be filled by a good citizen, a true gentleman, and in fact a man in all respects qualified for its duties, and one of whom the city may be proud. It Is easy to obtain just such a man. We care not who 1m be, to long as he fulfils the all-important requirements of the office. Let us have a model officer. Public interest demands it. The people expect it. E. E. Yongols the aeknowAedgal Hatter of these regions. New g<xxis just re ceived. Bargain in Linen Cuffs at. 25c. at Jno. McGouh A Go's. Hay or** Court. Yesterday the Mayor held an investiga tion regarding the charges made against the polk*', and mn-coeded in establishing sufficient evidence against a substitute to dismiss him. No one preferred this charge, but it was upon motion of the authorities. Now that this case has been disposed of, : wo hope the Mayor will go to the bottom : of the matter. The man dismissed was | the most objectionable of all* and wo trust | he will not be made the scapegoat for the ! others. It is reported tliat the Court will be open for all persons to make charges, who desire, agaiust the police. This is not the way it should be managed. We may catch up with the world yet; they say the spelling bee is a fixed fact now. Human fame is fleeting as the morning mist. Even the hem of a spelling boe is soon forgotten. There is a thermometer in a certain store in t his city which stood just a little above zero yesterday, and yet you insult its own er if you cast any reflections upon its ac curacy’. The arrival of a train is a little thing in itself, but Urn one which c-uine from Atlan ta yesterday morning was invested with j an extraordinary importance to many of [ our rising young men. All the roads in the State will, eventually, do the same thing. The present rates are too high, and prevent much travel which more liberal arrangements would secure. Self-interest will prompt a reduction. We wore pleased to see Policeman John Brady on the streets yesterday His foot is almost well, and he is fast recovering health and spirits. We congratulate him upon his convalescence, and hope to see him soon upon our police force again. He is a good officer, and we cannot afford to lost; him. Atlanta has had a second grand spelling boe, and vv* haven’t begun on ours yet. The Atlantese say t he last effort was even more successful than the first, and was at tended by an immense audience.
