The gardens in the city are growing and
flourishing. Mr. Dan Duncan, yesterday,
gave us a specimen Irish potatoegrown by

From present indications, we judge that
there will soon be a great abundance and

Girard.
Girard has caught the spirit of improve
ment. Things aro beginning to ealivon a
littlo. Tho Tax Assessor, Mr. U. L. Mar
tin, Is busy receiving assessment of taxes.
He will close his books in a few days. The
people seem to Iks giving In their taxes
very generally. The tax has recently
been r<*duecd somewhat, but still rather
heavy. The people all look cheerful, and
uro either Hopeful of the future or used to
the hard times of the present.
Gardens look well and the Inhabitants
spend nil their spare moments in their
improvement. The strawberry crop is un
usually promising. The fruit trees all
look well. Crops in tho vicinity aro pros
pering.
Tho Hoad Commissioners are now hav
ing much needed work done on the road
which loads South from tho town. It is,
at present, in a very bad condition, and
ought to be much improved. On our re
turn from a visit "to our neighbors over
the river, wo noticed that the Mobile and
Girard Railroad bridge was receiving a
coat of paint, which will make It a much
better looking structure. The ico ma
chine, and the building which covered it,
have both entirely disappeared, and dur
ing the summer wo wilt not enjoy tho lux
ury of homo-made ice.
Speaking of Girard, there seems to be a
spirit of enterprise and activity germinat
ing among the people over there, which
may ripen in substantial improvement.
The town has become remarkably quiet
and peaceful of late.

Quite a little party went to Troy, Ala.,
on the pay-train yesterday. It consisted
of a considerable number of young lodic'S
and gentlemen and a few dignified and
stately matrons, whose presence greatly
increased the average of gravity. The
party visited Mr. and Mrs. 11. D. Green.
After remaining a short while in the at
tractive and prosperous city of Troy, the
excursionists returned. They arrived at a
rather late hour last night, and in the
moonshine looked rather fatigued.
A number of young ladies and gentlemen
enjoyed a little pie-nic yesterday afternoon
a few miles from the city. They went out
about five o’clock and returned shortly
after eleven. This interval was spent in
pleasures of various kinds. A string band
was carried down from the city, and there
was considerable of tho “tripping of thy
light fantastic toe.” The cold, disagreea
ble weather must have Interferred some
what with the pleasure of both these little
affairs, but we suppose its effects were not
very serious.

The total net receipts of tho Bon Friday
night were about seventy dollars. This
will be considerable help to the Memorial
Association.
It is certain that wo will have at least
one more B. The people seemed delighted
on Friday night, and another entertain
ment of the same kind would be much
more largely attended. Tho spclloinanla
seems to grow upon the people every
where, and the more they have of them
tho more they seem to Iks pleased. A move
ment is now on foot to have a grand B at
the opera house some time this week. A
much larger class could bo obtained, as
almost everybody is anxious to go into it
since they have seen how funny it is. Sev
eral ladies have expressed a willingness to
enter the contest. This would odd quite
a charm to the entertainment, and we
hope their minds will not change before
tho occasion arrives. The ojwra house
ought, to bo tilled at the. next B. A fine
class can easily bo obtained, and no diffi
culty now lies in tho way of having a rare
entertainment.
They had a B in Atlanta Friday night,
in which a large number of ladies partici
pated. The affair is said to havo boon
most delightful. Wo can get up just as
good a one here, and wo look for it to come
off soon. It is rumored that Hook and
Ladder Company intends to havo a B soon,
with all the latest improvements and sev
eral innovations on the old style. If their
plans are carried out, it will be decidedly
rich. Let’s have a few more Ba. We
think the public will appreciate them.

THE LOUS OF A GOOD WOMAX.
The world moves on all tho same. It
takes no notioe of our birth, or our death.
It bears the shrieks at tho one, and the
groans at the oilier—but still it moves on.
It Is a busy world, and has little time to
give to anything outside of Its hurry and
turmoil. Jho moving mass cries, “On
ward ! a wear y onward! but still forever
onwurd!” In the thronging multitude are
many tired hearts, that have been strug
gling for years to bear up under the heavy
life-burdens; and, one by one, these weary
pilgrims are stopping by the wayside to
die. A few farewells aro spoken—a knell
is rung—and tho dead form is burled awa>
in a grave, covered with a handful of
daisies. To the world this is all—the whole
story. Sometimes thero is a sigh, that
good man or a good woman is gone; but
the world never knows what it loses.
Yes, the world is poorer by the death of
every good woman. From society is lost
one of the forces that make up the resul
tant of human good. From homo inbu
eneo is gone a light and a virtue, the
absence of which makes home dark and
dosolatc. The world loses a silent power,
humanity a faithful friend, society a useful
member, and home its only sweet comfort.
All that is good, and pure, and holy, Is
found in a g<Kxt woman; and from her
must emanate all the tender sympathies
and sweet charities of daily life. Who can
estimate the worth of her influence ? Who
can count the good words that she utters,
the holy affections that she inspires, the
seeds of kindness that she scatters any
where and everywhere ? We never value
her worth until she is gone. She may
work and think and feel as she does, all
for the happiness of others; but not until
this working and thinking and fooling is
done, do we f now how large, a place she
flllcMl in the hearts of us all. She wears
out her life in self-denial and self-sacrifice.
She lives not for herself, but for her loved
ones; and, if we fail to know what she is
while living, we do not fail to cherish her
memory when dead.
oo to thy atVr.
Go to thy rest, iweot spirit, sleep
Safe in thy silent tomb;
Where thou caust never wake to weep,
Where pain can never come.
Rest from all toil and care and woe,
Rest from all heart ache, reft;
From life’s sad lot, pure spirit, go
And live among the blest.
Cold is thy brow and closed thine eyes,
Thy pulseless heart is still;
Rut where thou art in Paradise
There is no deathly chill.
Pure was thy heart, consumed its dross,
Thy soul was Iren from stain,
And earth is poorer for thy loss,
Heaven richer for thy gain.
The Master found uo withered have*.
No tares in what was sown;
But harvested the golden sheaves
And all thy w* rk was done.
For thee the stars of Heaven shall shine,
For thee a crown remain.
Oh I to have lived a life like thine
Is not to live in vain I
Jio to thy rest, thy happy rest.
From ail earth's sorrow free;
Wake to be numbered with the blest
Through all eternity.

Yesterday, Mr. A. M. Brannon informed
us that lie had just received from the Gor
don Grange, at Seale, Ala., a donation of
slsfor Hie tornado sufferers. He desires
to return his sincere thanks for this kind
assistance. Most of the people have given
liberally to those unfortunate people, and
while the tornadoes were great calami
ties, they have served to show how strong
arc the ties which bind together the peo
ple in this section of the country. Much
of tho suffering of those on whom this ter
rible blow fell lias been relieved by tho
timely and liberal contributions which
have come from all parts of the surround
ing country. The tornadoes afflicted va
rious portions of the State at about the
same time, and everybody there seems
to havo shown sympathy for the sufferers,
and an offort to assist them. We cannot
but admire the noble liberality of the peo
ple of Augusta. They have given with a
true spirit of Christian generosity, and
will long be remembered for their efficient
and willing assistance. They have raised
within a very littlo of $9,000 for tho suffer
ers in tho various parts of the State. This
is a fine tribute to the liberality and
christain sympathy which must prevail
in that city. True, its inhabitants are
wealthy and prosperous, as a rule, but we
do not think it will be found that any city
or community in the whole State, has
given a sum anywhere approximating tho
donation of tffo Augusta people, even after
making due allowance for a difference of
means. The biblo doctrine is that where
much is given, much shall be expected,
but too often wealth is found without lib
erality, ami property without sympathy.
All honor to the }>eople of Augusta, who,
while in the enjoyment of plenty and
prosperity, have not forgotten the suffer
ings of their fellow-men.
