To-day is an eootunon ever to la* held
sacred and memornhlo by the Jewish race.
Last night was tho anniversary of the
passover. The celebration of this day
evinces their memory and gratitude for tho '
kind providence which preserved the house (
holds of Israel unharmed while death and
devastation were at work among the
Egyptians. Tho story of that terrible
night of anxious watching by the captive
baud Is told with power and pathos in the
holy scriptures; how they marked tic*
| door posts that the Angel of Death might
pass by, and how, amid all the sorrow and
desolation which afflicted Egypt nnd
whose object was the deliverance and
freedom of tho chosen race. How amid
all the terrors of that awful night the
captives felt the security of his proud
whose word never fails. In exodus xU,
(original) is found tlm expression, “Lei i
Shimnioorim,” which has a double rriean
i ing: a night to be observed by future gen
! orations ns one of a memorial of redemp
j tiun, and, according to other comment ■-
i tors, li moans a night of watchfuhe
! and circumspect ion. This explosion d*-
I flues the character of Passover Eve. Tic*
following day is tho Feast of I\r
j and Is an occasion of great rejoicing. 'I he i
! terrors of tho night are then all con'*;
amid all its destruction Israel j astx 'u
preserved unharmed, and with grateful,
happy hearts the people rejoice and re
turn thanks to Him. who has been their j
salvation.
Tills is one of the most important de y~
observed by the Jewish religion. To that
i people? its annual recurrence must be full
i of lessons of wisdom.
} In the observance of this d::y, n*ie
from It's religions aspect, there to much of
poetic beauty.
To the Jews it has a meaning unknown
to all others. It is a day on which their
ttffcctiuus are Fixed. It is set apart by
their religion and by them held most 1
| sacred. It speaks to them in a language
unheard by all others of past bondage •* id
misery; of deliverance from the galling
yoke of bondage and restoration 1>
national glory and prosperity; and
now, since the rneo is scattered, .
! nationality lost and even the hopes of tho ,
future sometimes diin, it must be doubly
dear to them, as It tells of a Providence,
