I Editor Doily Times As this is tho pic nic seafton, you will pardon ua for asking I space in your columns for a moution of • the excursion to Troy on Saturday last. I On that day the regular pay train for the j employee* of tho Mobile A Girard Rail | road made its monthly trip. Superintond j ent Clark and Treasurer Frazar, in their accustomed kindness, attached two coach es to the train and Invited a number of friends to excurt w ith them to Troy, the site of Bike county. ' In accordance with the iuvltatiou, quite i j a party took the train at 0 a.m. There ! were probably two ears filled with a gay I and pleasant party, !>ent on fun. As the j train movod off we took a glance at the ! various individuals of the party, and I found uinong the number several of our i leading citizens, with their families, quite a number of charming young ladies, a small representation of the average Co j llimbus bead, many small boys, a few lit tle misses, and tho usual number of "Ilf j teenth amendments,” having in charge j babies and banket*. Eight miles from the city, the force was increased by a very valuable addition of two of Alabama's fairest daughters, in | d<*od, we believe that a large measure of the pleasure of the trip, was drawn from ' this valuable acquisition. Our engineer, | conscious that ho was on mission of pleasure, as well ns business, drove ills iron horse with rapid pace. One after an other of tho numerous and flourishing towns along the road wen- passed, as the wheels below us measured the miles in quick succession, so the sun above us not less rapidly marked the hours, and ere wo knew it, the time for lunch, (or in pie nic language, dinner,t arrived. I his, you know, is one of the most imjwrtant events in the occasion of n day given to pie-nic ing. How welcome cornea tho cheering in vitation to dinner, especially to a man 1 who got up too soon to get his breakfast. Right here we might endeavor to show the utter folly of any man trying to an swer that question of Gwen Meredith; “Where is the man that can live without dining?” But space forbids, so wo for-' bear, suffice it to say, that no man in our party could iind that man. On the other hand, not one failed to do full justice to the contents of the richly loaded baskets. At two o’clock p. m. we rolled intg Troy. Our party, in solid phalanx,; charged upon this modern Ilium. But we were not like tho Grecians seeking revenge for the loss of the most beautiful women i of the age. We had not suffered so great, a loss. A **for simih " of the ancient Helen moved among us, and, therefore, we en tered the stm-t.s of Troy, not in tho pent up sidesof a wooden horse, and witli bated breath, but with free and joyous hearts, and a full determination to make the best of the opposing dust, which the wind impu dently Hung Into our eyes. About one hour was allotted for the stay here. Most of tho party, after taking a bird’s eye view of the city, accepted the invitation of a gen tleman formerly of your city, and repaired to the residence of 1 >r. Barron. Here the I time was spent in social chat, music, danc | ing, Ac. Your corespondent, hoping to I “improve each shining hour,” took ad van* i tageof this interim to make some inquiries of a practical nature. He learned from one of the leading mer chants that business was beginning to flag, and that, the summer dullness had set in. The prospects for a good crop in that section are flue. If the seasons are eommersuraie with the pluck and en ergy of the farmers, Pike county will he blessed with an abundance when the har vest time comes, At 3 p. in,, the locomotive} sounded its warning note of departure'. Then; there “was hurrying in hot haste.” Some of the party caum rushing up in great alarm, fearing that they wouid is* left. Wo saw one party of half dozen ladies coming down the green from Dr. llarron's home at full speed. Far in the distance, was the single masculine attendant, coming on apace with a large basket on his arm. He, more wise, had taken it leisurely, while the ladies ran their dear selves out of breath. They should have known that our polite conductor would not have left one of them. Leaving Troy at the hour above men tioned, our train headed for Columbus. As the engineer had gained two valuable and charming assistants on starting from Troy, he put his pet engine to her best. A quick run was made; at nine p. m., w<* crossed the Chattahoochee, two minutes later Broad street depot received the ex cursionists, a little worried, but not too tired to carry home with them recollec tions of a delightfully spent day. W* think we expr**ss the sentiments >f t he on - tire party, when we thank Messrs, (’lark and Frazier for lie* pleasures of the day. That the shadows of these gentlemen may ia*ver grow loss and that the lkjoks of the M. A G.
