The magnificent stock of dress goods,
including the Alpacas and Bombazine, at
J. S. Jones', because they are new and
fresh, and beautiful in lustre. Besides,
they are sold far below even the prices
asked at stores closing out. This can only
be explained In the fact that Mr. .Tones
buys his goods at copper bottom figures,
and sells at a small advance. If parties
are skeptical, we suggest that “seeing is
believing.”
The above is reported as the substance
of a conversation of a number of ladies in
a prominent inantua making establish
ment In this city. “Verbum sat.”
Festivity.
The colored population has caught the
prevalent spirit of festivity, and the “load
ers” of the clans are now plotting any
number of pic-nics. The darkies say they
”lerfor seursions.” Circuses and pic-nics
are the special joys of our colored friends,
and wo wish them a Tull fruition of the
coming festivities.
Nulkubop.
Wo hear complaints from certain parts
of Broad street, that ladies and children
are dally put to great inconvenience by
the promiscuous obstruction of sidewalks
with velocipedes, wheelbarrows and hand
carts. This is undoubtedly a nuisance
which causes no little inconvenience, and
its prompt stoppage is eminently in order.
Attention, I,utlle!
All the ladles who will assist in the work
of decorating the graves for the 2tith, are
earnestly requests! to moot to-day in the
purlers of the Perry House. Plenty of
evergreens, twine, and all the necessaries
for the making of wreaths and crosses
will be found there. Much work is to bo
done, and it is to be hoped that it will be
begun to-day. A full attendance of the
ladies is urged. The work will bo very
heavy if only few attend.

The weather was threatening all day
yesterday. The clouds kept a continual
cover over the sky and a strong sunbeam
was the only evidence of cheering bright
ness that broke the gloom. A cloudy day
Is generally of no importance. It is well
they come once In a while, for naturally
when nature iselad In sombre robes and a 11
tho world looks sad, wo reflect, and cloudy
days are often tile times which we devote
to careful self-study. Yesterday’s clouds,
j however, were not pleasant to many of the
1 young people In this city. They would
I have much preferred clear skies and balmy
| breezes, and would not even have asked for
“Enough of Hhadow
To temper Uie gUre of the huh."
Tho pic-nlc which was to have come off
at the Villa do Reich last evening had been
talked of and anticipated until it wan
looked forward to as ail event of no little
local Importance. Everybody expected
that the night set apart for such an Impor
tant event would, of course, bo bright and
beautiful, and that a fortuitous combina
tion of circumstances would sniilo upon
the occasion. Tho disappointment at the
cloudy skies and the sullen looks of the
day was very general. The forenoon was
occupied by weather prognosticators in
guessing whether it would clear off before
night. As the afternoon advanced tho odds
were much in favor of rain, and soon on
the street corners and other conspicuous
places placards of postponement were
placed.
Tho pic-nlc, tHo long tulkedof, tho nnx
ously expected, tho muchly prepared and
the necessarily postponed pic-nic will take
place to-night. All that has been said of
it, nil that has been hoped for it, ail the
attractions necessary to first class pic-nlc
enjoyment, will bo displayed in the Villa
do Reich to-night.
The military companies have a battalion
parade at half-past five o'clock this after- j
noon, after which they will resort to the |
happy scene.

Rev. J. 0. Branch preached a most up-j

He gave an outline of the character of the
deceased; spoko of his devotion to the
church, and his trust in that Almighty i
Power which sustained him in the hour of
death and enabled him to meet Its terrors
bravely. His last words were the words
of Job, when ho said, “The Lord gave, and
