The corner stone of tho colored Meth odist church now in process of crootion near tho Jail, was laid some time since. As Is customary on such occasions, a large number of those present deposited various little things in tho cavity of the coruor stone. Jewelry, ribbons and trinkets of various kinds were contributed by those present. Somo money was also thrown In by the wealthier members. It seems that somo ungodly darkies were present at this interesting ceremony, and looked on at tho lining of the corner stone with unusual Interest. Tho stone was put in its placo and the construction around it moved on nicely until Wednesday night, when it was rudely torn from tho foundation of the church by some unknown, felonious, sacri legious hands. These unknown felonious, sacrilegious hnnds seems to havo made desperate attempts to open tho stone and rob it of its concenlod treasures. Their efforts failed. Masonry had sealed that stone up for good, and it was not to be clawed open by tho linger nails of ovory greedy darkey. The treasure was pre served, and though the large stone was torn from its place, it was left unhurt and unrobbed. Those who endeavored to tear open the sacred rock doubtless anticipated a big haul, from their efforts. It now seems that had they succeeded In thoir designs they would not have been much benofltted. Wo hear the pastor took the money which was deposited in the corner stone to aid in the erection of the church Instead of being sealed up in a rock, to rot to ashes, simply to fulfill the requirements of a time-hon ored and highly practical custom. There are times when practicality is eminently sensible and when its harsh roughness is overlooked In the contemplation of its happy results. It is reported that the work upon the church has been temporarily suspended for the want of means. The committees are making a very thorough canvass of the town, but thoir efforts do not seem to lie remarkably successful. How church building or anything else that depends upon public contributions can proceed during the present financial stringency, is a first class conundrum. The famous "Coloner' Whitley will long be remembered in this community on ac count of his prominent part in the investi gation of the Ashburn killing. It seems that his laurels have withered somewhat of lute. Ho does not Hcom to be such a ‘big dog’ os ho was a few years since. The Washington Swulay Chronicle, Forney’s Radical paper, says of Whitley and his creatures: "It has boon our duty since tho trial of of the Harrington safe-burglary conspir acy to chroniclo tho arrest of several of the witnesses who swore so hard for tho defendants on that trial, for varh >us crimes, and now another rose fades away. "Gen eral” W. J. Manks, who was one of "Colo nel" Whiteley’s detectives, and who was one of lie leading witnesses for the de fense, was arrested last week In New York for selling fifteen thousand dollars' worth of counterfeit ility-eent notes, and commit ted to Jail. The telegraph informs us that ho has been Indicted, and sun we expect to hair of his conviction. This was a prett y class of men to bring here to swear truthful men out of court. By tho time tho second trial of this conspiracy shall take place we expect that all of the witnesses whotes tilliil lor the defense will bo in somo kind of a prison, and we hoi>e it will not be long before the second trial will tako placo ei ther." The following, indicating the presence of trne poetic lire, was recently found upon the slate of a school boy almost a thou sand miles from this city. All objectiona ble features should bo pardoned for the sake of childish innocence: “() Lord above look down in love Upon ua little scholars. Wo havo a fool to teach our school. And pay her twenty dollars." American humor is dying out. There have not been more than nine hundred and seventy-three puns on the appointment of New to succeed Spinner in the Treasury. A California misanthropist says: A nice little boy who never would steal apples, grew up to be a man, went into merchan dising, broke three times, paid nothing on the dollar, retired rich, and is now a shin ing light in one of San Francisco’s most fashionable circles. The worst thing the baggage smasher lias yet done was to break a Detroit box directed to the grasshopper sufferers and reveal that it contained only a pair of old boots, some frozen potatoes, and a curd inscribed, “The Lord loveth a cheerful giver.” Remember the prayer meeting every evening at six o’clock, in the locture room of the Presbyterian church, by tho Y.
