Bradford, re vived n dispatch yesterday announcing his (l<*ath nt 11 o’clock a.m., in Charleston, whore ho had gone in company with his wife to visit his daughter, Mrs. Hattie Muckenfuss, and also in search of health, having been sick and confined to his room several weeks before his departure. He was an Irishman by birth, como to this country in Infancy, learned his trade (car pentor) and married in Charleston. Ho was llrst known to our citizens os builder |of the St. Joseph and 1010 Railroad; after j wards built and managed steamers on the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers. He built ■ for these rivers tho Palmetto, South Caro ) lina, Laura, Harriot, Calhoun, Munner- J lyn, os also the steamer America, plying I between New Orleans, Key West and Apa | lachlcola. After the war he was selected by the Eagio and Phenix Manufacturing | Company—-in which he was a large shan | holder—to act ns Master Mechanic and Architect, a jxiHition which ho occupied up to a short time ago. The canal, dam, and Mill No. 1, were constructed under his su fierintendcnee, and stand as a living mon ument of his skill and energy. He was an j honest, earnest, retiring man. His hand | was always open tothose who asked aid. 1 His age was about fifty-nine. ! Our sympathies an* extended to his be | rsaved family, and our community will i feel the loss of so valuable a man. His re i mains will bo brought to this city for in . torment, via tho Macon train, Sunday i night, if is funeral will probably take i place Monday morning. J You can buy Shoes, Kid Gloves and Handkerchiefs cheajier at tho New York i Store than any house in Columbus. ChrHp WHlcr Work*. Tho merchants on Broad street lietween the Georgia Homebuilding and the Ran kin House have found a plan of watering the streets during the summer, which is likely to be successful, and is certainly | cheap. An agent of the Atlanta Stone Pump ! Company is in the city, and he proposes to water the street along those two squares from one well and one of Ills large force pumps. A large well is to be dug in the centre of the street, and plugs are to i>e placed in front of the stores of those imr chante who enter into the arrangement. These plugs are to be connected with the well by rubber hose. A large force pump will force the water with considerable strength from the well to the plugs. From these it can bo thrown for a considerable distance, and the dust which makes our streets so disagreeable in the summer can thus be kept under. The agent of the pump company offers to put in his pump and make all the arrangements, ex cept the hose, for $75. Each merchant will supply himself with hose. The cost to eacli man will bo but little. Several of t in* •merchants have agreed to go into the ar rangement, and it will doubtless lx* effect ed. The whole of Broad street could be easily and cheaply watered by this method. One of the large force pumps can lx* used for a whole block. Tho cost would thus lie less than that of sprinkling wagons, ami the effects would certainly be more satis factory. If all tho merchants on Broad street would enter into an arrangement for thus watering the streets, they would lie made much more pleasant during the summer months, and the work could te done at a small cost. What has become of our Debating So ciety? We have not heard of it since that, famous question about the present style of female dress was proposed. Whether the Society is taking a long, silent and thorough study on such a momentous theme; whether it has fallen a victim to the vengeance of the class whose sover eign rights were called into question; or whether it has met its fate at. tho fore ordained time, and like all earthly insti tutions has felt the crushing power of time or the steady waste of decay; or, in short, what has become of itwoareuna ablo to surmise. Something serious must have happened, for In no other way can we explain a painful sileuco of five weeks on the part of this once eloquent organi zation. We are sure something has happened, and wo are truly sorry for it. Wo hope the Society has not breathed its last yet, and that if it languishes it may be speedi ly restored to moro than its pristine health and vigor. If the fatal moment has ar rived; if the mortal career of this institu tion, on which so many fond hopes were fixed, has closed, may we not hope for a phamix-liko restoration from even death itself to all tho inspiring power of new life? A ’giHxl debating society would un doubtedly bo the means of accomplishing much good among the young men of the city, and it is to be hoped that the recent efforts made at tiie establishment of such an institution will not fail, but will be crowned with abundant success.
