Heavy llall Niorw.
Last night, about nine o’clook, there fell
ouoof tho heaviest hall storms experienced
In thl* city for many years. A houvy cloud
camo up, and a vory hard fall of hall came
before any rain. Tho fall continued with
u nabatod force for 11 vo minutes. Tho stones
were very large, and tho ground was com
pletely covered. Many of the stones ware
larger than a partridge egg. In some
cases many of them congealed together
and made a mass of lee hilly as large as a
hen egg. Tho fall of the hall made a per
fect roar on tho roofs of tho houses. Many
panes of glass were broken. Sky-lights
suffered heavily. Several window panes
In tho court-house wore brokon. Tho noise
and confusion was so great that the Coun
cil was compelled to take a recess. In all
parts of tho city loaves were beaten off the
trees and strown on tho ground. Gardens
wero greatly damage. Flower pits and
hot-houses were badly Injured. Mr. Louis
Garrard reports that every pane of his hot
house was broken out as effectually as if
tho work bad lienn done with brickbats.
Flower gardens must havo suffered terri
bly. Some of the lee missiles were largo
enough to kill fowls. It Is to bo hoped
that this very heavy fall of hall did not
extend Into tho country, If it did, the
crops certainly suffered. Wo havo not
heard of any damage in city except a
wholesale breakage of window glass.
Heavy rains followed the hall at Inter
vals throughout the night. They wero ac
oomijjmlod by a great deal of thunder and
lightning. In short, we had a night of
storms.

Mr. l*eter McLaren.
The remains of Mr. Peter McLaren
reached this city Monday morning, on tho
Southwestern train. The funeral services
took place at 10 o’clock in the forenoon.
The, remains were accompanied from Al
bany to this city by Hon. A. C. Westbrook,
a representative from Dougherty county
in the present Legislature. Mr. McLaren
was well known in this city. He was one
of the oldest and most successful mer
chants that ever lived in Columbus. He
was born in Jamestown, Va., on the 22d of
May, 1809. His parents came from Scot
land. He moved to Columbus when he
was twenty-two years of age. He then
commenced merchandising and continued
in that occupation until just before the
war. He then moved to Dougherty coun
ty, where he purchased a large farm and
continued to plant until his death. He
was twice married—first to Miss Lucy
Hull, daughter of Gen. Elias Hull. After
her death he married a lady named Pace,
who was a widow. Asa merchant and
planter he was remarkably successful.

Chief Engineer Williams reported that
a cut-off valve for No. 5 would cost $l5O.
Remarks were made by several Aldermen
testifying to the efficacy of the cut-off
valve. Alderman Blanchard thought tho
Company could wait a while for the valve.
Alderman Jordan opposed the purchase
of the valve just now. He wanted it tested
more fully.
Alderman Blanchard called for the yeas
and nays, and hoped all would have the
nerve to vote as they thought best. It is
hard to get an alderman to vote against a
lire company.
Alderman Curtis moved to wait and see
the working of the valve at the annual pa

Alderman Ledsinger withdraw his roo

valve on trial, as the manufacturers were
willing to send one on sixty days trial.

MARKET CLERK’S REPORT.
Collections from wagons for April $7 GO.
Tom Moore, Clerk.
Columbus, Ga., May 3, 1875.
Hon. Mayor and Members of Qnincil:
There nos been a much larger increase
of sickness among tho city poor in March
and April than occurred during the past
winter. This increase has been due en
tirely to tlie severe and sudden changes of
weather with which we have been visited
the past two months. I discharged the
remaining coses in hospital on tho 15th of
April, and none have been admitted since.
Your hospital account for board of pa
tients the past live months amounted to
sll6 50; while tho wood and coal bill, in
four months, has cost you the sum of $75.
It is proper to state that not quite one
third of tin' wood and coal was consumed
for the use of patients in hospital.
It is a source of pleasure for me to re
port that no class of patients have been
neglected , or died under treatment , within
the past five months. Faithfulness in
office, and kindness in deportment toward
the sick and suffering, shall ever charac
terize the conduct of vour medical officer
in his daily round of duty.
Respectfully,
Wm. W. Flewellen,
City Physician.

Boon to Suffering Females.
LaGrange, Ga., March 29,1870.
Bradfield A Cb„ Atlanta, Ga.—Dear Sirs:
I take pleasure in stilting that I have used
for the last twenty years the medicine you
are putting up, known jis Dr. DradJUiUl'n
Female Regulator, and consider it the
i>ost combination ever gotten together for
tho diseases for which it is recommended.
I have been familiar with the preparation
both as a practitioner of medicine and in
domestic practice, and can honestly say
that I consider it a boon to suffering fe
males, and can but hope that every lady
in our land, who may be suffering in any
way peculiar to their sex, may be able to
procure a bottle, aud their sufferings may
not only be relieved, but that they may be
restored to health and strength.
With my kindest regards.
