CUlku' Meeting.
There will boa meeting of the citizens
at Ellis A Harrison s auction rooms to
morrow morulug at hall past nine
o'clock, to consider tlio propriety of tnk-
I iug some action for tho relief of the suf
-1 ferers by tho roccnt tornado.
The meeting on Saturday failed for two
reasons: First, because many did not see
tho call for it, nnd secondly, because the
people did not know the full extent of the
damage done by the roccnt storm, and
hence did not feol that Interest in the con
dition of tho sufferers which would lead
them to attend a molding held In their l>e
half.
Fuller particulars of the ruin wrought
by the torrible storm In Stewart county
have reached us since that time, and our
citizens now understand more fully tho
extent of the devastation.
Whether any considerable amount Is
contributed or not, there ought to Ist a
meeting to express sympathy anil to ap
is,lnt a committee to take up private sub
scriptions. Even a small amount donated
by a very large meeting of the citizens
would prove to these unfortunate people
that we fool for them, and If we wore able
would contribute largely to their relief,
j While tho city donated one thousand
dollars to the reliof of the sufferers In Tal
bot and Harris counties in March, it must
be remembered that those who suffered ,
recently are not the same parties. Some !
of them have lost all, nnd are ns neisly ns
possible. There should at least be a meet
ing, If nothing further than the appoint
ment of a committee to solicit subscrip
tions is done. Many of our citizens would
cheerfully contribute something. We hope
to see a large attendance to-morrow morn
ing at half past nine o’clock.

A Word to the Afflicted.
Below we publish a letter which ex
plains Itself. We saw the tumor spoken
of, and wonder that such an enormous
amount of flesh could have been taken !
internally from a man and he survive it. |
Dr. Benton is certainly fast gaining a rep
utation us a surgeon in this community.
He is elegantly fitted up at his home for
invalids, and has under his care patients
from Alabama and Georgia. The Doctor
has employed skillful nurses. Ilis suc
cess in tlio treatment of tumors, diseases
of the lungs and liver is truly marvelous.
We would advise ail sufferers from any
disease to give him a call, and at least
consult him on their case. He charges
nothing for consultation, so no harm Is
done.
Columbus, Ga., Mays, 1875,
Mchhch. Editors Dear Sirs: The can
cerous tumor I send you by my son meas
ures eight inches by four. Dr. Benton
removed it in three weeks, without the
loss of any blood. The place where it was
removed from is healing nicely.
Yours respectfully,
Nelson Benton.

Ulrnrd Cemetery.
It is unpleasant to view the very dilapi
dated condition of the Girard cemetery.
The place has almost gone to ruin and
looks like a burying ground which hail
suffered a century’s desertion. Every
thing has an abandoned appearance, which
Is a painful indication of neglect on the
part of those who should ovor care for so
holy a spot. If the spot does not receive
attention at an early day it will tie oven
worse than it now is, and will roiled very
discreditably upon the culture and taste
of our friends ovor tho river. Weeds and
undergrowth are already nourishing
whore flowers should bloom, and the
grounds that should be clean and neat, If
not beautiful, now look wofully abandoned
and dilapidated. It would cost a small
sum to greatly improve their appearance
and make them look, at least, like they re
ceived some regard from the inhabitants.
By expending a liberal amount upon this
oomdery it could be changed so much that
it would not bo recognized by one who
would look at It now. Tho ’people of Gi
rard can easily remedy this evil, and they
ought to do so. In no city or village should
the cemetery, that holy resting place of
the dead, bo the most neglected and aban
doned si>ot in tho corporate limits.

OPERATIVES’ PICNIC TESTER DAT.
Ye!•!>• ?.000 People • the ©round*.
Yesterday the largest pic-nic of tho sea
son came off nt Fort Mitchell, on tho Mo
bile and Girard Railroad. Tho operative
of tho Kaglo and Phonix Factory and their
| friends assembled there to enjoy their un
j nual plc-nlc. It was, perhaps, the grontst
j affair of the kind ever gotten up in Colum
| bus, and never did any affair pass off more
| pleasantly.
i Two trains loft the city early in the
morning, one at six and the other at eight
o'clock. Both carried a large crowd. They
returned at live and six o’eloek in the after
noon and brought the happy crowd bock,
all of whom were delighted with the days’
proceedings.
Never was there more real enjoyment.
The affair was perfectly managed, and re
flects groat credit upon tho committee of
arrangements. M<"srs. A. K. Mathison, |
William It. Martin, John Ballou, George
Crouch, T. Hunt, John Pennington, Ogden
Clegg, Edward J. Holley, William McAl
ister and Alexander Jenkins constituted
this committee. Messrs. N. Webb Pitt
man and Bailey Miller, of Oira rd, and Mr.
James M. Thompson, of Columbus, were
j the floor managers. Music for the danc
ing was furnished by Shepherd Rogers’
string band. Prof. Davie’s brass band dis
coursed line music on the grounds. Prof.
Davie is a fine musician, and was a gal
lant Confederate soldier.
An elegant platform, 40 by 40, had ljeon
erected, and all day long it was covered
with couples, who enjoyed the enlivening
dance. AH ages were represented here -
from early childhood to old age. Waltzes
and square daneos were going on the
whole day. Behind the platform a hund
red or two hundred darkies organized a
ball of their own on terra finm. Here
they danced, much to their own satisfac- j
tion and the amusement of all spectators, j
An old negro, who has probably outlived
a century, cut the "double shuffle” for
hours in succession, with such irresistible
effect, that his pockets wore literally filled
with contributions. He says ho made more
money than he could ut work in a whole
year.
The grounds were covered with ar
rangements for the pleasure of all in at
tendance. There wore fifteen or twenty
swings in the trees, which were continu
ally going. Games of all kinds were in
progress all day. Half a dozen large tis
sue balloons were sent up and sailed beau
tifully.
The arrangements made for the refresh- j
ment and enjoyment of the crowd were j
perfectly carried out, and there wus an ;
abundance of good tilings for all. Lem- j
onode and Ice water in the greatest abun
dance were furnished to all, free of cost,
by Messrs. John M. Claneoy and Henry .
Bussey, who did good service. Everybody 1
enjoyed these delicious beverages.
It is said that at least 1,000 gallons of
lemonade and ice water were consumed by '
the crowd. Confectioneries of all kinds
were on the grounds in abundance, and j
wore furnished to all who wished them.!
Barrels of nuts and candles were furnished, j
In fact, everything that, could be desired j
for refreshment or for food was therein!
profuse abundance, and were supplied to j
the crowd. Everybody had an invitation j
to dine with somebody else, and it is oer- i
tain that t he return train brought back no
hungry stomach. The free dinners of the j
ancient Romans could not have boon more
enjoyed.
Various spoi ls were Indulged in by the |
boys and young men. Sack races wore j
popular. About 10 o’clock there were j
three of those rich races. In the first |
Frank Holley was the victor; James King
won the second, and Torn Turner the i
third. About this time the attention of j
the crowd was called to a part of the!
grounds where James SmnorgUl was!
blocked up in perfect st ylo, and was mak
ing a negro speech. It was the richest
production of the kind we ever hoard, and
would havo made Cal Wagner ashamed of
himself. When Sumergill gets tired of
working at his present trade he will find a
; place on the stage easily enough.
| After this there were three more sack
! races, all of which were won by a lad
j named Joe Liles.
These races furnished unbounded mer
j riment for the crowd. Many of the racers
! fell and tumbled in all directions, but no-!
Uxly was hurt.
A foot race was entered Into by about
t ldrty contestants of ail ages. The run
ning was lino. A young man named
Brantley was the winner. Tho young girls
had a foot race, with two pounds of canuy
for tho prize. This was quite amusing.
Every female on tho grounds received a
present of a prize box which contained
some article of well plated jewelry.
The general arrangements of tins day
were under charge of Mr. Sandy Mnthi
son, who performed the duties of his office
well indeed.
There was not a gallon of whiskey on
the grounds. Everything was peaceable
and quiet, and a more pleasant entertain- ,
ment was never seen anywhere. Every
body hail a good time. It was a day of
genuine enjoyment. No one felt tho least
restraint, but entered fully into the enjoy
ment of the day. The old folks, many of
whom were present, seemed to lay aside
all care and to be as happy as they were
when their locks were like the raven’s
wing. It was a happy, glorious holiday,
and will long be remembered by all who
were present.
All day long there were no less than ouo
hundred and twenty-eight persons dane
| ing on the platform.
! The crowd present is variously estima
| ted at from 1500 to 2,000 persons. It could
j not have fallen far short of tho last figures,
j Out of this largo concourse of people there
was not a single tight or quarrel.
Tho pie-nic was a model. There was
never a better one, and not a single sad or
disappointed face could be seen. The
crowd returned in high glee. The day had
been passed delightfully, and there had
been nothing to mar its pleasures in tho
least.
When the last train was about four miles
from the city, a youth lost his balance and
: was com pell oil to jump off to keep from
falling. He alighted safely and was un
hurt. The train stopped and took him up.
The day could not have passed more
pleasantly. It was a delightful respite
j from daily toil, and was enjoyed to its
j fullest extent. Those present will never
I forget the festivity and the many pleasant
; little incidents of yesterday.

HEARTY, BLOOMING WIDOW.
Marietta, Ga., March 9,1870.
Messrs. Bradfield d* 00. *
Gentlemen—You will please ship us an
other supply of your invaluable Female
Regulator, end forward Dill by mail. We
are happy to state that this remedy gives
Ijetter satisfaction than any article we
sell. We have been selling it since 1868,
and witnessed many remarkable cures by
it. Among others, there was a lady
friend of ours who was sallow and sickly
until she was twenty-six years old, when
she was married. Her husband lived two
years and died. She continued in bad
health; in fact, she has never been what
a woman ought to be. A few months
after the death of her husband she saw
your advertisement, and came to our
store and bought a bottle of your Regula
tor from us, and took it according to di
rections. It lias cured her sound and
well, brought her regular monthly peri
ods on, and to-day she is a hearty, bloom
ing widow--with'the use of but tw< hot
tit's of your Regulator, costing her only
throe dollars, when she had tried several
physicians and spent a great deal of
money without any benefit. Wishing you
great success with your valuable reme
dies, we are, respectfully yours, etc.,
