Health.
Physicians report the health of tho city
to bo fast improving. Pneumonia is rap
idly disappearing and no new eases have
appeared in tho last week. The sickness
in Brownevillo and Girard which was re
cently so wide-spread, has greatly dimin
ished. Almost everybody is now undergo
ing tho inconvenience of a bad cold, but
beyond this the general health is fine. The
people seem to be recovering from the try
ing effects of a peculiarly trying spring.

On yesterday we made a thorough per
sonal observation of tho largo and com
plete stock of groceries now offered to tho
trade by Messrs. Watt & Wulkcr, of this
city.
This enterprising firm has steadily rais
ed itself In public favor until it lias built
up a trade which extends through all tho
section that does business with Columbus.
Beginning with a small capital and trade,
by hard effort ami untiring energy the
presont prosperous condition of tho busi
ness has been attained.
Messrs. Watt & Walker are fortunate in
their place of business. Tho locality is
ono which affords tho rarest advantages,
while tho building is furnished with such
facilities for the carrying on of a success
ful grocery business as can seldom be ob-1
tained. The arrangement of tho goixis in
the store room and cellar is admirable. In
the cellar are to bo found the syrups sold
by the firm. They deal principally in New
Orleans and Florida syrups; of the latter
they have sold about 800 barrels during
the present year. In tho cellar is also kept
a very large stock of lard. Here is stored
their supply of mess pork, which consti
tutes anew feature in Columbus trade.
This pork is packed in brine and is largely
used by the farmers in lower Georgia and
Florida. Its packing preserves it from
the flies, which are so destructive to ordi
nary pork. Messrs. Watt Sc Walker send
large quantities of this article to the lower
counties.
Up stairs are to be found meal and flour
of all brands, the best of which are unex
celled. Here also is a very large stock of
corn anti tobacco. In one end of the store
are three car-loads of iron ties, which were
bought when they were very low, ami j
which can lie offered to the trade at low
figures. The Arm had no need of them
when they were purchased but were able
to obtain a bargain in them and thus can
furnish them at favorable rates to the
trade.
On this floor all brands of sugar are kept.
Here also is displayed a complete st<x;k of
groceries of all kinds, and a farmer can
easily purchase his supplies from the stock
displayed before him.
The stock of pork and sides is very large.
During the past four months this Arm has
sold an enormous amount of meat. They
buy it in immense quantities and are con
stantly increasing their trade in this line.
The stock of fancy groceries is very
large, and from this a growing city trade
is supplied. Taking the whole stock, it is
one of the largest and best selected we
have ever seen.
The firm is fast developing a fine Florida
trade. Much of the trade of upper Florida
can be brought to Columbus, and this firm
already has a large and growing trade
there. Messrs. Watt Sc Walker are known
throughout the section that gets its sup-!
plies from Columbus, and their house is j
firmly establish!*! as one of thesafest, best j
and most accommodating in the land.

There are still general complaints of
tho stealing of flowers. A large number
of choice flowers have been hooked from
yards and porches. The thieves seem to
t)e very artful, and have succeeded in es
caping detection. During the winter
months, chickens were the sufferers from
this band of sneaks, and now their efforts
seem to be exerted on the flower gardens.
There is plenty of room in our jail for such
scamps, and It is to be hoped they will
soon be placed there.
The l'olllce Force!
The police force of the city now consists
of eleven mcD and two captains. It is ru
mored that the number will be reduced, at
an early day, to ten men, if not eight.
If the city can be well served by eight or
ten men, the reduction ought to be made.
During the summer months very little is
going on. Everything is quiet, and not
many conservators of the peace are need
ed. Macon, with a larger population than
Columbus, has a much smaller police
force, and the affairs of that city seem to
well regulated.
Every city should have an amply
police force, for tho maintenance of peace
and order, but if there is one superfluous
man on the force he ought to bo dropped
as soon as his services are not needed.

IN MEMOBIAM.
' Every day the world is called upon to
mourn the loss of some dear relative and
friend. Each day brings fresh accessions
to tho grand army of the dead, each one
blessed with their pocullnr virtues
i honored by their own friends. This rifle
Is just as it should be.
On the 10th day of May, died in Colum
j bus, Mrs. Lena Barnett, nee Miss Lena
; Fischaclier. But little over ono year ago
she stood at the hymeneal altar the blush
ing bride, with all tho future bright and
glided with the radiance of hope. She
was then married to Mr. M. L. Barnett,
of Florida. Full well is remembered the
happy occasion when friends were gath
ered to wish them a long life and happi
: ness, and it seems a mockery uixm life
that one so young and who had so much
1 to make the ocean of life a pleasant voy
age, snould be thus suddenly taken away.;
She was the devoted adopted daughter of |
Mr. and Mrs. Dessau, and to her they in
voluntarily turned as a solace in their old
age. Her union was blessed with a child,
but In the same hour that the life was
created, the seeds of death were sown.
But few people in this section will fail
to remember her without pleasing emo
tions. The sympathy of all are enlisted
in tho bereavement of Mrs. Dessau, her
kind protectress—for, like her life, she was
the devoted friend to her death.
In Mrs. Barnett, the poor of tho com
munity have lost a Arm and ever ready
friend, her adopted parents a true and
noble daughter, and her husband a faith
ful and loving wife. In so short a notice
we fall to do do justice to the many noble
attributes of this excellent young lady.
Everything that human skill could sug
gest was brought to bear in aid of her
life, but God called for her devotion, and
she obeyed the summons with a ready
willingness.

Yostorday afternoon about l o’clock a
negrro named Emmet Greene was bathing
in the river just below the railroad bridge. I
He got into the current of the river and
before help could reach him was drowned.
An effort was at once made to recover his
body. His friends adopted every moans
in their power, but up to a late hour last
night the body had not been recovered.
The boy was about flftoen years of age.
He lived with his old grand mother named
Clark, who lives at the wagon yard, and
was a step son of Andrew' Greene, who
drives for Mr. J. Rhodes Browne.
Every year someone is drowned about

HEARTY, BLOOMING WIDOW.
Marietta, Ga., March 9, 1870.
Messrs. Hrtulju ld t* O). :
Gentlemen—You will please ship us an
other supply of your invaluable Female
Regulator, and forward bill by mail. We
are happy to state that this remedy gives
better satisfaction than any article we
sell. We have been selling it since 1808,
and witnessed many remarkable euros by
it. Among others, there was a lady
friend of ours who was sallow and sickly
until she was twenty-six years old, when
she was married. Her husband lived two
years and died. She continued in bad
health; in fact, she has never been what
a woman ought to be. A few months
after the death of her husband she saw
your advertisement, and came to our
store and bought a bottle of your Regula
tor from us, ami took it according to di
well, brought her regular monthly peri
ods on, and to-day she is a hearty, bloom
ing widow—with the use of but two bot
tles of your Regulator, costing her only
three dollars, when she had tried several
physicians and spent a great deal of
money without any benefit Wishing you
great success with your valuable reme
dies, we are, respectfully yours, etc.,
W. Root A Sons.
